Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder
LeftWinger and 3 others reacted to krsmith17 for a post in a topic
Nyquist and Tatar were never expected to change their game and become "grinders", nor were they ever played on the 4th line with scrubs. Nyquist and Tatar were put in a position to succeed right from the get-go, Jurco was not. He was mismanaged worse than I've ever seen. I think the fact that he was a big kid (6'1" over 200lbs.) went against him. If he were a smaller player, like the aforementioned, he would have never been expected to play a grinding game, and he would have had more of an opportunity to show of his skill. He will get that opportunity now in Chicago and I think he's will surprise a lot of people. I think a lot of people would agree with the above, but maybe not what I'm about to say... A bit of a bold statement, but I truly believe that if Jurco were utilized properly, and given the same opportunity as the likes of Nyquist and Tatar, he would have been as good or better than both... The talent is definitely there, so I'm excited for him to get an opportunity in Chicago. -

Hot take!! I do not disagree! Plainly and simply, the Wings need to give guys they expect to play a certain role the opportunity to play that role. If their expectation was that Jurco was going to be a bottom-six grinder they should have given up on that experiment a while ago. If their expectation was that he was going to be a top-six scoring winger they needed to give him more time and opportunity in that role. -

Like I said, Panik was waived by one of the league's worst teams and he IS playing up there. Chicago has a good core and a great coach, if Jurco can't make it there he can't make it anywhere. But I don't think, in his case, that past performance means much. It's not like the Red Wings have been great at asset management the last few years. We'll see how he performs, but I won't be a bit surprised if he's much better in Chicago than he was here. We currently seem to have no idea how to maximize guys' abilities in Detroit anymore. -

Jurco did show his skill set on the ice. His performance on most nights was good, certainly not bad enough to be the scratch after every game. He did look good when the puck was on his stick, and more often than not made smart plays. You're right though, it was more than just stats, and I believe it was also more than just on-ice performance, it must have been attitude, lack of intensity in practice, or something else behind the scenes. There's just no other explanation for the utter mismanagement in my opinion... -

Agreed. Even if he bounces back, I dont think him at his best is even worth a 1st rounder. I do want to say though, the buzz on twitter was from second tier sources, take it with a grain of salt. -

As horrendous as sheahan has been this year i don't expect his goal production to be this bad again , probably bounce back to 10-15 that being said depending who we leave unprotected , the fact he's a first rounder and still only 24 means there's a chance he could get claimed so if he we can get a 1st(which I doubt) then I guess we gotta do it -

TSN guys should have you covered. They retweet anyone else that posts about trades and such.. I follow McKenzie, Dreger, and LeBrun and they pretty much cover everything NHL trades/rumors. -

I wouldn't say we NEED to trade them, but prices are high this deadline so getting a nice return for them would be great! If indeed there are contenders wanting Vanek, they are willing to outbid each other, get the highest bid. -
1 point“The thought is that Sheahan is having a miserable year,” Kypreos added, noting that the 25-year-old centreman has no goals and sits at minus-19 through 58 games. While some may speculate that the Leafs could look for a discount given Shanahan and Babcock’s connection to Detroit, Kypreos shot down that idea. “The feeling is, regardless of being goalless, that could cost you as much as a first-rounder if the Leafs want him,”Kypreos said.

On Hockey Night in Canada's "Saturday Headlines," Nick Kypreos stated that the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in Riley Sheahan of all people, and Elliotte Friedman stated that the Red Wings want to re-sign Brendan Smith, but Adam Oates pointed out that Mike Babcock knows Smith and the Leafs may be interested. It would be very, very weird if the Red Wings made one deal with the Leafs, never mind two, but I could certainly see Sheahan fitting in with Babcock's youth movement... I don't mind if they give Sheahan another season and see if he bounces back, but he's been absolutely horrendous this season. He's a defensive specialist and he has the worst +/- on the team and isn't putting up any points really. If they can get a first for him, do it. I'd rather they bring up Bertuzzi anyway. -

There were rumours that they were interested in him. Tatar would bring a bigger return though and they probably wouldn't give up what it would take. I'm sure Kenny would want a good player rather than a pick or prospect for mr. Tatar. Anyway, the hawks are always dealing with cap concerns these days and they couldn't fit Tatar in - especially with him on the verge next year. I think that's got to be a plus for them with Jurco since makes 900 thou and won't be getting much of a raise next year as things stand. -
1 pointI agree. But there's no way Holland leaves DeKeyser unprotected. And if he doesn't trade Green by the deadline, he has to be protected. Be good to have him around next season, plus he'll fetch a good return at the deadline then. The last one is the tough one, unless Smith is re-signed. Then he'll be protected. If not, one of Jensen/XO/Sproul will be. The good thing is Vegas can only snag one player. I hope it's a forward unless they take Kronwall, Errorsson, or Howard. Lol .

1 pointI'd take anything HSJ writes or says with skepticism. Remember when she wrote that Coreau would be the best of the three goalies to protect, after a total of ten whole NHL games under his belt? There's no way she knows for sure who any of the players the Wings are planning to protect are, besides the obvious ones like Nielson, Zetterberg and DeKeyser. I'm sure the list will leak, but it's a bit early for that.

Why would anyone give up anything valuable for Sheahan after this season? This guy is putting up offensive numbers enforcers think are pathetic. -

There's no way Tatar or Nyquist is left unprotected. -
1 pointOh ok, that makes more sense. I like XO a lot, but I dont see him getting claimed, and even if he does compared to other teams out there I dont think its going to be a big loss. I think LV will take one of Howard, Helm, Abby, or Sheahan. Fingers crossed for E!

So basically we lose ouellet on waivers ... Just f***en greattt and why handcuff us with another garbage contract , for the love of God holland needs to get f***en lost -
1 pointIt wasn't too long ago that Panik was a waiver pick up. Now he's on the top line of one of the league's premier teams. I wouldn't guarantee that Jurco is restricted to only 4th line duties.

He's practicing with hossa and kruger, wouldn't surprise me to him with toews at one point or maybe a toews hossa jurco line Down the road as toews and Hossa have played together before and not sold on panik schmaltz longterm wasn't eaves on the redwings 4th line as well?cant expect to score in that situation .... Pens should go get Drew Miller and put him with Crosby and just enjoy the goals lol -
1 pointHe wouldn't fit our system. Too many similar players.

1 pointMy take: Clearly Chicago saw something in Jurco, enough to warrant a 3rd round pick. They might be right, most of us know he has skills, it just hasn't translated to our team. Who the hell knows if he'll bloom there. Only time will tell. As for us, a 3rd is a solid return on Jurco given what he's done here. In my opinion it is way better than I would have expected, I'll take it any day and let our scouts try to get something this summer. In summary, I don't care if Chicago made a steal. He didn't bloom here and this is not something I'll hold against the organization even if he was to shape up with the Hawks, rather, good job from Ken Holland.
