2007 Baseball Season

Its certainly tough to repeat a world series, unless you're the late 90's Yankees. I think its enough tougher for the Tigers since A) there were a lot of young kids with breakout seasons last year, you never know who is going to fall back to earth this year; and B) there's no advantage of surprise anymore. Plus, playing in the AL Central doesn't help. Every team except the Royals is a legitimate playoff team.

I trust Leyland completely to guide this team. It's only April, we've still got a winning record and only 1.5 back from the Tribe.

This has been a couple good days for the Tigers, and I'm starting to see the light.

The bullpen appears to be on track (finally), and Sheff is out of his slump. He, Ordonez, and Guillen are making it really tough on pitchers right now.

Don't be surprised if the Tigers go on a run the next 10 to 15 games. I like the way we're playing right now.

I think Sheff is the key right now. The Tigers have a decent record with their 3-hole not doing much of anything. Typically, the 3 and 4 hitters are the most important hitters in your lineup. Certainly, they are expected to be your premier run producers. And the Tigers have done decently without much production from their 3-hole. So if Sheff heats up, I think the Tigers could get really hot.

Ok Craig hit a homer. I can tell my bowling average vs his batting average is gonna turn out to be some kinda battle this year ;)

2nd sweep of the season; we're on a roll! Yeah, I know it's only the Orioles and Royals.

The team's really coming together. Sheff looks like well Sheff, and Monroe and Casey are coming around too. All-in-all the offense is cooking right now. The only one not hitting well is Pudge.

The Zumaya injury is scary; we have the depth in the bullpen with Mesa and Rodney to withstand an injury for a little while, but definitely not for any length of time: Especially considering how many close games we've played in thus far.

Anyway - the Mariner's are coming to town for the next three. I like the matchup. We have Bonderman-Robertson-and Verlander starting. Ouch!

We could easily be talking about a 10 game streak by the middle of the week.

Man, Tigers are really on a roll. Come on guys, let's pick up the Tiggies chatter. The soccer thread almost has as many posts as this one ;)

Since I'm going to be in the D for a wedding in a few weeks, I picked up some tickets to the Tigers/Cards game on Sunday. I can't wait!

I would like to take this moment, to remember why I love Jim Leyland. He reminded me when he was asked yesterday about facing Dice-K that night. His response:

"I don't give a [expletive] about him. I'm not getting into all that. I could give a [expletive] less. It's another pitcher. We're playing Boston. Obviously, he's an outstanding pitcher. He's a major league pitcher. And that's who we're facing."

Thank you Jim Leyland.

Well, you called it. :P

Cleveland is the only team the Tigers should have to currently worry about in the AL Central. Chicago is like 4 games back now, and playing very inconsistant. Everyone else is pretty far back too, unless Minnesota does a complete 360 in the standings like they did last year.

Cleveland scares me right now. Despite some blowout scores against bad teams (I think they got beat like 9-1 against Baltimore) they still look really good. They will certainly give the Tigers a run for the AL Central title this year.

Cleveland worries me quite a bit.

I was at the game Sunday, nice to see a sweep of the Cards, even if it was a few months too late.

The Cards are awful this year. Who could have thought they'd fall flat on their face like this?

Tigers can't hammer past Cleveland for the AL lead. Hopefully Cleveland takes a nosedive or something, because I don't want to rely on the wildcard spot to get the Tigers in.

Sorry im a bit behind but...ANDREW MILLER baby!!!

Something really needs to be done about this bullpen...and fast! These guys lke Aquafina Lopez arent gonna cut it. I have nothing against the guy, but inevitably i think the move here may be to trade Maroth for a reliever (and subsequently call up Miller of course)

Andrew Miller had better not pitch another game out of the 'pen ever again. I think patience is in order. In a couple months Zumaya will be back and so will Rogers, and Durbin can be bumped to the pen. He hasn't been pitching so bad lately after a horrible start.

Yuck, no. Durbin sucks.

By the way, what's the status on Rogers? I really want him back soon. The initial time frame was about 2 months, and it's coming to that time now.

Unless its in the playoffs, Andrew Miller should NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER be in the pen.

The Tigers have starting pitching depth in the minors, with guys like Dallas Trahern as well as Miller obviously. Which is why i think the move should be to deal Maroth for pen help, he's going to get pushed out eventually.

Hey, I'm just looking at immediate options here. :D But yeah, it's probably a bad idea.

It's just that, you know, the bullpen is in a downslide with the injuries. Any ideas of who would be availible if say, the Tigers did want to deal Maroth? I'm at a blank right now.

Bullpens a tough call, i dont know who's available. Plus theres so many obscure names out there that none of us probably even know!

I have no idea how he's doing this year, but Farnsworth mouthed off to the media about Clemens being treated like a god a few weeks ago. Georgie may not have liked that, and the Yanks of course need starting pitching...maybe we could bring ol' Farnsey back!

The hell I want to see Maroth in pinstripes. Maroth is one of my favorite Tigers (possibly my favorite, depends on my mood) for the way he handled himself during the '03 season. Pure professionalism all the way. Seeing him in a Yankee uniform would make me barf.

My take is, we got tons of starting pitching both on the big club and in the system. Guys like Maroth and Durbin can be used out of the pen, and so can Jurrjens and Tata, etc. Why trade a pitcher to get a pitcher when we can just use what we got and probably be just as effective?

If we're going to trade a pitcher, it had better be for a first baseman. I like Casey, I know he's a Leyland favorite and he's terrific with the glove, but he must be the lightest-hitting first baseman in all the league. Trading some of that pitching for a first baseman with even an average bat for the position would give the Tigers a nasty lineup.

The thing with Maroth, its like he'll never be more than that .500 pitcher with the mid to high 4 era. Which dont get me wrong, is more than acceptable for almost every team but when you're a team with the quality of arms the Tigers have he more or less becomes in the way. In the way of free agent pitchers, and in the way of young arms with potential. The Tigers have Bondo, Robertson, and Verlander. Barring an injury Miller will be in the rotation next year...so thats 4 right there. What if Rogers wants to come back? What if another young guy with potential is knocking on the door? See what I mean about Maroth kinda being in the way and the odd man out? It doesnt make sense to throw him in the pen when you can actually get something decent in return for him via trade. Why make him a long reliever? And he also doesnt have the pitch makeup that would really make him a good middle or late reliever either. Plus he's not the whining type, but you know thats not a role he'd be happy with anyway.

With Casey, given his track record, i'd be willing to wait till the deadline to see if he can bust loose. We dont need homers out of him, all we need is defense, making good contact (not striking out) and a .285+ avg. At the very least, he still can be useful as a defensive late inning replacement.

What is up with our bullpen! Christ, Jones can't even preserve a 4 run lead. Wasn't he just running his mouth off about guys needing to come through!

Also, I can't believe Leyland left him out there for all 5 runs. That was the equivalent of Tremblay leaving Patrick Roy in for 9 goals. Jones had no chance tonight; they were hitting rockets off him.

Apparently we need a 20 run lead to win a game anymore.

Todd Jones needs to be released or not be allowed to close a game. I'm through with his blown saves, 70's porn mustache, and loading people on base. People will say he's good because he forces a lot of pop up balls but I'd rather have a closer who throws strikes because you cant play around with contact attracting pitches. Whose our closer in toledo? I'd feel safer with him on the mound.
