Nashville ... Catfish?

I did't read thru all the post so if this is a repeat sorry.

There are few traditions in sports that compare to those in the game of hockey. One such tradition is the throwing of octopi onto the ice at Red Wings games. Ever wonder how it started?

The octopus first made its appearance on April 15, 1952, during the Red Wings' Stanley Cup playoff run.

Two Detroit brothers, Pete and Jerry Cusimano - storeowner's in Detroit's Eastern Market - threw the eight-legged cephalopod on the ice at Olympia Stadium. Each tentacle of the octopus was symbolic of a win in the playoffs. Back then, the NHL boasted only six teams, and eight wins (two best-of-seven series) were needed to win the Stanley Cup. The Red Wings swept the series that year, and the Octopus has come to be the good luck charm ever since.

For Nashville and the catfish I guess is best put this way. The catfish is a bottom feeder and like crap. Nashville was a bottom feeding team for many years so hence the Catfish and history.

Note: Any other team that throws catfish or rats are copie cats. SEE ABOVE. The Octopus had a meaning 8 WINS to the CUP.:D:thumbup:

Also why the rat thing did't stay long the NHL ban the throwing of stuff on the ice. Due to the fans in Florida thru so many and gave a delay of game penalty to the home team.

GO WINGS :D:D:clap:

Well that makes sence, They are a bottom feeding team and always will be one. Long the live the Cat fish to show them selfs as being a bottom feeding team and not a elite team!

So if a catfish symbolizes them as a bottom feeder why do they still do it? They are fighting for the top spot in the league why dont they throw something on the ice from the top of the food chain? How hard is it to hide a lion under your shirt anyways? Then again...in Detroit a Lion is considered a bottom feeder!

Is throwing an octopus really any better? Just because its been happening since the 50's makes it ok while the catfish isn't because it's a new team?

At least there is a story to it, and "good luck" came out of it as the Wings won the cup that year. Thats a great way to start tradition.

It's not so much the catfish that bothers me, but as someone mentioned, why in the hell would you throw those catfish in a regular season game when your team is losing?

And why five at once for that matter?

Care to elaborate on why it is better other than the reason that the Red Wings fans do it?

The octopus is better because its built on tradition. A tradition of winning the cup and be being a powerhouse team. Nashville just started the catfish because they wanted to copy the Wings and be like us. Maybe one day their tradition will be big but they are just starting out on an idea that Wings fans invented.Yes the Preds are trying to start a tradition and good for them. But the Wings fans started something and because the whole octopus idea was unique to the Wings and now we are being copied and not just by Nashville either. ;)

Guest Don Corleone

It is fitting, their organization's goal is to become exactly like Detroit.

:lol::lol: :

Wow! Some of you are so full of yourselves. What arrogance.

You guys do realise that while it's fun to refer to the Wings using "we", none of us has any claim of ownership over the accomplishments of our favourite team. It's fine to be proud of you home town, or just plain favourite, team, but arrogance implies you've got at least a small hand in doing something. Cheering for a team is literally the least important job you can have. Sure having the home crowd rooting for you is great, but teams still win cups on the road too.

So please, for the love of god, stop acting like YOU have your name on the Stanley Cup.

EDIT: BC- that wasn't directed at you, I actually agree with you.

You just took all of the fun out of sports. Thanks for ruining my entire career.

And Drake is right on about stereotypes. I've been saying that for a while now. If Nashville, or any other team had threads saiyng Wings fans are nothing but crackhead gangbangers who live in the murder capital of the country, aka America's Beruit, I know there's a lot of people here who would get pissed off.

St. Louis is now the murder capital. It passed Detroit in October.

Maybe not in name, but without us fans there would be no Stanley Cup, just a bunch of weirdos with sticks hitting rubber. ;)
