2007 College Football Season Talk

Les Miles had a short press conference, not taking any questions. He basically said that he is the coach at LSU, and plans to stay that. He also said he has no intentions to talk to any other teams. He did not even directly mention Michigan at any point during the press conference.

Well....what Miles said was "I am the coach, I will be the coach, and I haven't talked to anyone." Nothing about Michigan or even LSU. Nothing about an extension. Nothing at all. Might as well not even have had the press conference. This is getting stupid.

Based on the impression I got, I don't think he is going to Michigan. The think about the contract extention was from a comment from LSU's AD in an ESPN article. Oh , LES did directly mention LSU. The video is in the link also.

ESPN: Miles will stay at LSU, working out new contract

This is getting out of control, and it's pissing me off. I really believe Miles left the door open for Michigan, but we shall see if we still have a shot. In his press conference he never said he agreed with the contract, and he never shut the door on U-M. He easily could have said both, and sealed the deal. I know he wants to talk to U-M, but it may be too late.

I think it comes down to money. There's no way he'll get as much from Michigan as he'll get from LSU. LSU may have to offer double UM's offer just to keep him.

in DII news, Grand Valley won its 40th straight game, defeating Central Washington and "The guarantee" (CWU QB Mike Reilly said they would be the ones to end GV's 39 game winning streak) 41-21, and the national semi-final game next week will be a re-match of last year's National Championship game against NW Missouri St.

Holy crap! The Pitt vs West Virgina game had the worst officiating I have ever seen and yet with so many bad calls against them Pitt pulls the upset. It also looks like Oklahoma is going to beat Mizzou, soundly. What does this do to the BCS?

that is why they need a playoff system... this way a year with no clear cut #1 can work itself out on the field rather than the computers shafting 14 other teams who have a shot at it.

Ohio State vs LSU or Virginia Tech for the national championship. But, more importantly....Michigan is almost a lock to go to the Capital One bowl now. Which means the Capital One bowl gets to eat serious crow, after their comments of 'Michigan is not on our list of teams' and that BS.

No way Va tech goes over LSU...LSU beat them by 41 points this season.

No way Va tech goes over LSU...LSU beat them by 41 points this season.

The conference champions break down as follows, with current BCS ranking in parenthesis.

(2) West Virginia

(3) OSU

(6) Virginia Tech

(7) LSU

(8) USC

(9) Oklahoma

It will be from those six teams that we can pick our top two; (4) Georgia and (10) Florida won't be selected over SEC champ LSU, nor will (5)Kansas be selected over (1)Missouri, who in turn wil not be selected over Oklahoma, who won the Big 12 title today.

Teams in the top ten that did not lose today:

(3) OSU

(4) Georgia

(5) Kansas

(6) Virginia Tech

(7) LSU

(8) USC

(9) Oklahoma

(10) Florida

Missouri and West Virginia will drop to somewhere between 4th and 10th. LSU is likely to move ahead of Virginia Tech, given the aforementioned 48-7 rout.

Ohio State and Kansas are the only one-loss teams left in major conferences. Kansas lost to Missouri, who failed to win the Big 12 title game. History says Kansas would be a controversial pick at best, as they didn't do well enough play for their conference title. Georgia falls into the same boat. Missouri failed to beat Oklahoma for the Big 12, so they are in that group of 'elite runners-up' as well. West Virginia is a conference champ, but one that just lost 13-9 to a team that was 4-7. Virginia Tech is a conference champ, but was destroyed by another conference champ, LSU. USC is a conference champ, but also lost to a team they were expected to beat by 40 points. Oklahoma is a conference champ, but they don't stand a real chance at the title game with idle and winning teams ahead of them. Florida is the third-ranked team from the SEC, and did not even get a sniff of the conference championship.

My BCS Bowl Picks:

Title Game: OSU v LSU

Rose Bowl: Illinois v USC

Sugar Bowl: Georgia v Missouri

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma v Arizona State

Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech v West Virginia

It was pretty easy to make my picks actually...assuming those are the ten teams picked, that's the only logical bowl formation given the OSU/LSU game; Rose picks Illinois (available Big Ten team) and Sugar picks Missouri (best available at-large pick). That leaves the Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl with BC and WV. Arizona State used to host the Fiesta Bowl, and are a no-brainer for the at-large pick there, which in turn forces the selection of West Virginia to the Orange Bowl.

My BCS Bowl Picks:

Title Game: OSU v LSU

Rose Bowl: Illinois v USC

Sugar Bowl: Georgia v Missouri

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma v Boston College

Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech v West Virginia

BC is from the ACC, so they won't be the at-large selection for the Orange Bowl, putting them in the Fiesta Bowl; which in turn forces the selection of West Virginia to the Orange Bowl.

while I agree with you on LSU being in the title game, I am not sure about your other at large teams. Mizzou has 2 losses and IMO, Kansas is not back in to the BCS based on what the Tigers did to put themselves out of the BCS. Also think Arizona State and Hawaii are in over BC and Illinois. Hawaii is a shoo-in based on them being the only undefeated team left and as much as i would love to put them into the title game against the buckeyes because every other team (LSU, Va Tech, Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, USC) blew their chances on the field, Hawaii still hasn't played anyone worthy. Throw them in the Fiesta or Rose bowl, but not the title game. Arizona State is .5600 and Illinois is .4200 in the BCS. I find it hard to believe that Arizona State would fall behind Illinois during a weekend when Arizona State won and Illinois was idle.

My bowl predictions

NC game: Ohio State vs LSU

Orange: Va Tech vs West Va.

Sugar: Georgia vs Kansas

Rose: USC vs Hawaii

Fiesta: Oklahoma vs Arizona State

Ohio State vs LSU or Virginia Tech for the national championship. But, more importantly....Michigan is almost a lock to go to the Capital One bowl now. Which means the Capital One bowl gets to eat serious crow, after their comments of 'Michigan is not on our list of teams' and that BS.

Illinois is going to the Capital One bowl. Michigan is going to Champs Sports bowl.

Boston College ended up there because I had forgotten their loss when I was filling out my expected teams. Hawaii and Arizona State will be competing for tha Fiesta spot, however; The Rose Bowl will take Illinois as they should move up a couple spots, and the Rose prefers to match up Big 10 and Pac-10 when possible. I'm adjusting slightly to correct the BC pick thought.

I still don't see why Hawaii wouldn't be in the BCS games based on them being the one consistant team in the whole NCAA divison 1 season. They only won the games on their schedule.

I'll outline the at-large bids for you:

With an OSU/LSU title game, the Rose, Fiesta, and Orange each will have one at-large bid. The Sugar will have two.

Teams already lined up for bowls via conference affiliations would be:

Rose: USC

Fiesta: Oklahoma

Orange: Virginia Tech

That leaves us with four at-large selections. Kansas and Florida are currently top-ten teams but will be unavailable as neither is the top-ranked non-champion in their league and therefore they are not BCS eligible. Missouri or Kansas (whichever Big 12 team finishes ranked higher), Georgia, Boston College, Hawaii, Arizona State, and Illinois are the top six BCS at-large teams as currently ranked, competing for four selections. The Rose is likely to select Illinois, as they are an eligible Big Ten team and beat Ohio State. The Sugar is likely to select Georgia to replace LSU. Boston College is likely to drop to the back of that group.

This leaves us selections for the Fiesta Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the Orange Bowl, and Big East champ West Virginia will get one of those selections as well. The list of teams competing for the final two at-large spots is Missouri/Kansas, Hawaii, Arizona State, and Boston College. Missouri/Kansas will likely be selected; as a Big 12 team they won't be Oklahoma's opponent in the Fiesta. West Virginia is likely to be tabbed to play local rival Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, forcing Missouri/Kansas into the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. This means the Fiesta Bowl will pick from Hawaii and Arizona State. These two teams are pretty close; the tie breaker will be the fact that Arizona State used to host the bowl, is a local team, and would be a much better draw for the game than Hawaii. Hawaii has a shot to play in only one circumstance; the Rose decides to take the best available team (likely Missouri/Kansas or Georgia) rather than an available Big Ten team, and the bowl losing a team under my scenario opts to take Hawaii instead of similarly ranked Illinois.

Ok I thought the BCS picked from top 12-14, not top 16. Under your plan, that scenario could happen. Although it is not given that the Rose Bowl has to have a big ten team.

Hawaii will get the nod over Illinois for the Rose Bowl based on the following:

#1 People talked about the Fiesta bowl with the Boise State-Oklahoma as one of the greatest games of last year. The unknown can be such a great thing in college football.

#2 Add into the fact that Hawaii is an exciting, high powered offense team.

#3 and a group likely to travel to the mainland to see a game in California is greater than Illinois going all the way to Pasadena. (had Michigan be a rose bowl contender and not Illinois, this would be a no brainer for Michigan).

I agree it makes plenty of sense to me.

ugh...i knew Oklahoma was gonna take it to Mizzou. These cinderella teams always find a way to blow it. At least WVU lost too, as they were never a championship game caliber team anyway.

that is why they need a playoff system... this way a year with no clear cut #1 can work itself out on the field rather than the computers shafting 14 other teams who have a shot at it.

Nobody's getting shafted here though, because nobody deserves to even play for the title! This isnt the same as a couple unbeatens getting screwed, or even a few one loss teams, these teams all had their oppurtunities and blew it...in some cases more than once. Whatever the computer decides is just fine with me.

LSU is going to kill Ohio St.

I think its an absolute joke that we have to throw a 2 loss team in the NC game, but under the scenario given...you have to. Kansas is not worthy and neither is undefeated Hawaii (even tho I would love to see them in). LSU is next based on their losses in 3OT, their tough schedule, and the simple fact that they won the toughest conference this year in the SEC. And like Lou said, LSU will kill Ohio State.

Here is some food for thought for Michigan fans.

Had Michigan beaten Wisconsin and Ohio State, Michigan would have been going to the National Championship game.

As for the Rose, I definitely dont feel Illinois should be in there against USC. Personally i'd kinda like to see a game that isnt over at halftime! Illinois is a nice story and has very much improved but they'd get spanked by USC by probably 40 pts. At least with Hawaii, you'd get to see Colt Brennan in action. Brennan is the reason i think the Rose Bowl would definitely want Hawaii over Illinois. They'll lose, but at least theyll put some points up.

And tim is right in saying people are looking for the next Boise-Ok type game....that screams Hawaii vs USC. (although i dont feel Hawaii would win)
