During the first round I had a discussion with a coworker about Rinne. He said he thought Rinne we owning us (he's a blackhawks fan, fyi) . When I watched the series i saw a whole lot of perimeter shots, and was continuously screaming at the TV for Zetterberg to quit sending his stupid weak backhand harmlessly at the net, time after time.

My overall opinion of that series was a lot like the 2006 series with the Oilers. Tons of perimeter shots that made the opposition's goalie look like a superstar.

Anyway, fast forward to today, and we see the Phoneixf****** Coyotes put up 4-5 goals on him with similar shot totals.

I am of the opinion that we clearly didnt test Rinne in our series, and the dogs are getting the best if him and exposing him.

You are probably right, but I would like to point out that the reason Zetterberg takes those weak backhanders is to set up plays and second chance opportunities. The problem is, we had no one on that line to take advantage of it.

I remember the Wings doing that during the Dave Lewis days too. They would just pepper Giguere or Kiprusoff with all these perimeter shots and nothing was going in. I remember watching Shanny and Hull blast it from virtually anywhere into Giguere's pads like if they shot it hard enough it would go through him. I'd rather see the Wings set up a play and take 18 shots with a better chance of them going in rather than shoot the puck from anywhere and rack up 40 SOG. That series was very 2003, 2004, 2006 for us.

Nashville did do a hell of a job boxing out players and forcing those perimeter shots. Haven't watched a minute of the PHO v NSH series, but my guess is that the Coyotes are getting to the net with the puck allot easier than we did.

I had the exact same feelings. I though i jumped into a time machine. Those are the painfully typical playoff red wings in all of their glory... the thing that annoys me with this team is how they seem to only play when they want to. I swear i can call a game, win or lose after the first ten minutes with these guys. I especially remember the 2009 series with the qucks being that way. You never knew if you were getting dave lewis wings or.... the wings that actually want to put in the effort to win.

I think you are right about that as well. But they go hand in hand. We sucked, didnt test Rinne. Everyone says he the next coming of Patrick Roy, and then the dogs light him up.

I have been thinking about the way our team plays and wondering if there should be a change in our philosophy, or at least some adjustments made. When I watch Wings games compared to other teams, the possession of the puck always seems so one sided (either the Wings are carrying the puck, or they are not). In other games, you see two-way hockey with plenty of chances by both teams at either end. The pattern seems to be that in any given game, the opposition either has figured out how to keep the puck out of our possession and prevent us from moving it the way we want to, or they don't, and we dominate them by racking up time carrying the puck and creating quality chances. Should there be a contingency plan to the way we play in a series like this year's? I'm not sure our team is built to adjust into another style of play, but it's a thought. Clearly some teams know better than others how to trump our puck possession style play, like the perennial Sharks and this year's Preds.

The series is really taking on a life of its own. In the series against Detroit, Nashville was allowing nothing but perimeter shots and bad angle chances. In this series, Phoenix has been capitalizing on odd man rushes and prime scoring opportunities. I remember this goal for instance....



Can you remember Detroit getting prime chances like this? I really can't.

Now you can blame that on Detroit not being hungry enough, but I look at how hard Nashville played that series. In this series, they appear to be on cruise control while Phoenix is fired up and ready to play.

They're picking up secondary chances too. They just drive the net harder than we could imagine. They force Nashville out of their box while driving the net.

Rinne wasn't that great in the Detroit series, his weaknesses are obvious, Detroit just never capitalized on them.

His size plays a factor although he is highly agile, but he very rarely had an amazing save that looked intentional. Nashville did a good job clogging the lanes and most of his saves were because Detroit took it straight to him or shot from the half boards or blue line.

the problem was that we never attacked on the rush. we would gain the blue line then spin back and wait for more players to enter the zone. This happens literally every time we bring the puck in. What the coyotes are doing is gaining the zone and going deep and getting shots with guys coming in still to grab rebounds real fast. We try to set up some sort of pp formation.

I think the Yotes have been underestimated as well. Just like we see all season, the bottom feeders show up for games against the Wings and the Wings underestimate their opponent. Nashville got cocky because they beat the big bad Detroit Red Wings, now they're getting showed up by the desert dogs. I'm loving every minute of it.

Rinne was coughing up rebounds left, right, and center in the first round, and same in the second. The difference is the 'Yotes forwards are willing/able to get bodies to the low slot to bang a few home, where as the Wings forwards would/could not. Getting some garbage loosens things up and gets the goaltender cheating, usually making it easier to score on the first shot.

Wings had WAY too many perimeter shots definitely, but when I look back at all the juicy garbage Rinne was knocking down that the Preds were able to clear without a problem, its clear that the issue was us, not them. There weren't any pretty goals scored, but the Wings didn't get enough of the ugly ones. The Dogs are.

watched both PHO-NASH games. There are thouthands of reasons for Nashville loosing and Phoenix winning. One of the most important is that Nashville truly believes they are a better team while they are clearly not. It is in their style of play. We drove to the next as hard as Phoenix is doing right now. The difference is not even Rinne. The difference is the way Nashville defenders are playing now. They are always looking for some opportunities to attack and their defensive effort is not there because of it. Roles are reversed now compared to Nash-Det series. In order for Nashville to win they need to go to their basics meaning that they should not try to win but should try not to lose.

My intent when I started this thread was just to see if anyone else thought that Rinne got way to much credit for the pred's success against us. I know the preds had stiffling defense, and our forwards appeared to be out if gas most of the series. I am just sick of all the credit and hype Rinne gets.

Same thing happened in 2010 when the Sharks beat the Wings and then bowed out in the Conference Finals in 4 straight games against the Hawks.

Chicago thought they were better too and found themselves trailing almost every game against PHO requiring last second miracles to take it to OT only to then get out hustled in OT.
