Ilitch is being cheap with the Wings now that the Tigers are good.

There is no truth whatsoever to the OP's allegation. Ilitch gave Holland the OK to offer massive contracts to Suter and Parise last season. The reason that the Wings aren't at the cap is that there weren't exactly a ton of players to spend money on last offseason.

I was going to say the exact same thing. Glad I looked through past posts. Anytime you offer two guys twin 13 year 90+ million dollar contracts you're not exactly pinching pennies. The fact that they chose a different place to play says nothing about Illitch's willingness to spend money.

FYI to everyone else who thinks otherwise...the Motor City Casino last year alone made enough money to pay for the duration of Prince Fielder's contract. Illitch has PLENTY of money for both the Wings and the Tigers. Fact.

But we all know it's Marian that owns Motor City, not Mr. I...*wink, wink*

Ilitch has been vocal about his dislike for the NHL's salary cap and that he likes that baseball doesn't have one.

That being said, I don't think the Wings not being up against the cap is some evidence of him spending money on the Tigers that he could've used on the Wings.

The Wings have what $7 million in cap room? When you're talking about the amount of money Ilitch spends on these franchises, plus or minus 7 million is chump change.

It's probably more a sign of Holland being even more conservative than usual the last couple seasons because of the new CBA and lower cap.

He'll be even more unhappy when the cap goes down to 64.3 mil next season. The days of spending big in the NHL ended in 2004, 2 CBA's ago when the salary cap came in and was what...46 million or something like that? It's hard to get the best players when your GM spends responsibly for the most part and almost every other GM raises players stock by overpaying because the guy in question may be the "1 missing piece" to their roster. Not any of our managements fault that most of the last free agents wanted to play where they grew up, though Dekeyser chose us so we can be thankful for that.

I have a feeling that Kenny's gonna strike gold when teams need to shed salary, or when they can't afford to keep all their good players and Kenny has the cap space to give them the extra .5 mil that their team was unable to offer them. In all likelyhood, Kenny will push to get a guy like Clarkson or Raymond, or both this summer when they're UFA and their GM is fumbling to shed salary.

THIS. The OP is talking 100% rubbish.

Wow? First its Holland, then its Babs, and now Illitch. Who's next to blame for this travesty.

It's called the current NHL. There's a couple teams that are pretty dominant this year and maybe next. You think they're not gonna have some cap trouble in the next couple yrs? All the middle teams are fairly equal. Exactly what the NHL wants.

Teams are gonna have to build contenders from their own prospects a lot more than relying on rentals, unless your your current team is just a player away from being a contender, which the Wings are not. Another reason Holland is holding picks and prospects so close.

Not that I think the op is right in anyway, but the Illitch family wants a World Series title more than anything for Mr I. And no one deserves it more than him.

I don't think Ilitch is afraid to spend money, but he doesn't seem to care about the Wings that much anymore.

Meaning, he hasn't been putting his foot down enough on Holland's throat, during these last few years of Kenny's inactivity and bad moves. Holland needs to feel a bit more pressure, instead he seems to have total immunity based on past successes (which weren't all his).

Dave Bing says "thank you" for that information.

Dave Bing ought to know how much money Illitch has, or at least he knows Illitch has the 60 or 70 million dollars in taxes that he hasn't felt like paying.

Yzerman. Cause he's the player who our dynasty began with and now he's Tampa's GM. The sky is falling...

The discussions in this message board are getting dumber by the day. Why do I even bother?

It's just uninformed whining. I'm outta here!

"And what are your reasons for wanting a Little Brother?"

("Don't say revenge... don't say revenge!")

"Uh... revenge?

("That's it, I'm getting out of here!")

Mr. I isn't being cheap in any way shape or form. Last summer he was PERSONNALLY trying to land parise and Suter. Fle out to get them, wined and dined them, they choose to go home. Nothing wrong with that. This fall we will be within 2 million of the cap, if not closer just by resigning our own UFA/RFA players.

Holland did try to get O'reilly, but he failed in his attempt-which will haunt us. Mr. I is not nor has he ever been the problem. Every time Holland and DD have gone to him and asked for money, they get it. he is the best type of owner. he stays out of the way untill the GM asks him to get involved.

The first thought that went through my head when I read the topic title was "What an ungrateful ******* ***** ** ****." First, the money that was earmarked for certain players was never necessary; second, there were no viable back up plans; third, the cap was expected to shrink. Spending up to the cap at that point would have put us in a bad salary dump position; why sign some players only to have to buy them or others out?

Just because the Wings are going through a few speed bumps is no reason to turn on the man who lost millions of his own money for YEARS to keep this team here; spent millions of his own dollars to sign the best talent available and has given back more to his players and this town than any other NHL owner. I think you owe Mr. I an abject apology.

Great post Vladdy16. One crazy 48 game year and some fans turn into spoiled brats, there is only so much you can do as an owner and a gm, now we have people making excuses towards Illitch favoring one team over another. Enough with theses stupid threads and making excuses. I like this board cuz there are alot of great Wings fans and realistic Wings fans, we all know we aren't gonna contend for a cup but my god, excuses and whining is getting old fast. It will hopefully stop once we make the playoffs.

I don't think Illitch is tightening the purse strings. We've unloaded some big contracts and not had to give any out. UFAs were either overpayments, or potential trades wanted draft picks.

Plus, the cap is dropping next year. They pulled out all the stops to get Surer, I think Holland is just being cautious.

This is a terribly thought out topic. First off, Illitch's first love is baseball. Second, I doubt he has any bias over any of the franchises he owns. When there was no cap, he built the Red Wings like he's building the Tigers now. The NHL is salary capped and in terms of trading, you gotta have what other teams want, and have to stay within salary requirements. Whatever your team, 4 Stanley Cups, 2 world Series appearances, 1 NBA championship, plus we also get to watch the extremely over produced, over hyped American spectacle version of a watered down rugby sport that is Football (which has included 2 of the best offensive players ever in Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders,) us Detroit sports fans have been pretty blessed over the last 20 years.

Granted and it is sad, I've never met Ilitch but let me tell you what kind of owner I think this guy is:

Ilitch is one of the only owners in this piss poor communism league, who stood up against the revenue-sharing, not happy with the lockout and guess he is the one, spending millions of his own money on the best available development coaches, over the top hotels and services (Wing Bird III anyone?!). Without the cap I'd bet my car Mr. I would spend whatever it takes to provide the team with near endless resources if it means another cup!

Ilitch is a competitive guy, he wants all his teams to do well and therefore will be spending. Having said that, there is no point in overpaying for average-players just for the sake of spending money, this would be just stupid.

So while everyone is entitled to his own opinion, I for one can't thank Mike enough for being the best owner in not only hockey but all of sports. An example of an owner playing it poor although filthy rich would be the guy who bought Manchester United (soccerclub), as his private toy.

Vladdy16 hits the nail in the head. Wings fans have been spoiled for decades with Illitch. Those who were here for the lean years before can fully appreciate it. Those who've only been fans since the "boom years" can't fully appreciate what we have as Wings fans. I've said it before about how NO GM in the league is going to give Detroit a break in a deal and be responsible for helping them get back on top. Decades of low draft picks, high amounts of man games lost to injury, the tragic ends to the careers of Konstantinov and Fischer... it's truly amazing the Wings have been able to succeed as long as they have. This is a down year in a big way and they are STILL in contention for a playoff spot.

I'm NOT saying long-time fans are better, but folks need some perspective. Illitch has been the model owner for an NHL franchise in many ways.

LOL. Illitch isn't being cheap. Holland is saving space to make the right move when it presents itself.

You might meant Roman Abramovich the owner of Chelsea. That little Russian treats the club like a 5 year old treats Legos. Thank god Mr I isnt anywhere near like that guy. The Glazers who own Man U dont mettle to much in Alex Fergusons running of the team. The big kerfuffle with them was how they took over Man U and how the supporters didn't want American ownership.
