Weiss

I would have rather kept Filppula at this point, considering their contracts are nearly identical. At least we KNOW he can put up 50 points in this system. I'm very curious to see what happens with Weiss. I don't think Holland will buy him out, but something will have to be done in the offseason to make sure he either lives up to his contract or gets moved to a team that fits.

Flip had 66 points one season, other then that his best seasons were 40 and 39. We don't KNOW he can put up 50 points in our system

Weiss is not playing great, but he is playing better. I personally think we should keep playing him tell it clicks. Which ever way and with whom ever. He needs to play. Putting him on the 4th line will just make him crap. And we can't have him craping out the 4th line because he makes too much money. he also has a NMC so he is not going anywhere. I would much rather see him with Z, D or even between nyquist and Tatar. It's evident he DOES NOT click with Alfie.

i disagree. i have not seen him put in much effort at all in these last few games.

i certainly hope he can turn it around eventually, but at this point i think he has played with most every forward we have and hasnt shown chemistry with any of them.

This is definitely concerning. You'd almost think he was being bullied in the locker room or something. He looks so uncomfortable and tuned-out.

I think it's pretty clear what must be done:

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Weiss

There is no other way.

(Say that last line in a really dramatic voice.)

He'll be fine, he is a professional hockey player with a good track record. Should he be lighting it up and playing consistently, yes; is he is a slump, yes; should we bail on his five year contract, no. The only concern for me is his lack of energy right now, the points will come but he needs to get a little hiccup in his step and not glide around the ice. Move his feet more and skate harder to the bench when he changes. But I do think he will eventually come around and when he does it'll be for good.

He put up 66 points in the Red Wings system, right? So, yes we do know he's capable of putting up 50 points here. Weiss has 5 years to try to put up similar numbers to the center that he was brought in to replace (Filppula). So far, he's on pace to completely fail in that regard. I realize that Weiss is playing on the 4th line, and not the 2nd or 3rd as Filppula often did, but he also hasn't shown the offensive ability to be in the top six.

Maybe a trade can be worked out with the TorontoMapleLeafs Weiss for a guy like Gardiner or Clarkson.

Regarding Clarkson, would you think they'd really wanna trade the guy after just signing him this offseason? I don't watch much of the Leafs but unless he's as much of a disappointment to them as Weiss is to us I don't see why they'd want to do that.

So as long as Weiss puts up 50+ points in one out of 5 seasons it's a success? Flip had one solid season then regressed to worse than he was prior to his good season.

He's pretty much exactly Toronto's Weiss so far. And as much as I liked him in NJ, Clarkson at 5.25 is a much, much worse contract to have then Weiss. He has a track record, and is slumping hard right now. But Clarkson had one season of 30 goals, 15 in a short season, and can fight, so that boosted his value. As of now, neither are any good and both contracts look bad. But I'll stick with ours and hope he can figure it out.

The thing with Clarkson is, he is/was basically supposed to be their Shanny '97. Hugely important for their team. A guy who would pretty much singlehandedly transform them into a Cup contender. Weiss, on the other hand, just needs to be better than Filppula. Obviously it hasn't worked out for him so far, but I like his odds over Clarkson's in the long run.

Well said, the way it's going, he's going to be their Larry Murphy before long. And agreed on Weiss over Clarkson. Much less pressure on Weiss haha.

I hear Toronto's looking for a center... *cough* come on Nonis *cough*

At this point we wouldn't get anything for this guy imo-but also trading him to Toronto would make me very nervous as I have a feeling he'd kill it there....Trade him for Brunner :)

Would like to see this next year

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Franzen

Nyquist - Helm - Tatar

Abdelkader - Andersson - Bertuzzi

Miller - Glendening - Tootoo

Kronwall - Ericsson

Smith - Dekeyser

Kindl - Lashoff

Howard

Gus

If Alfredsson wants to come back I'd obviously be fine with that, a big FA addition wouldn't hurt either. Still a good team though.

I would have to disagree about this being a good team, imo a good team would not have Andersson on thier third line, nor Helm on their second

i think a team who has trouble attracting free agents would take a chance ... nashville/islanders/columbus type teams

and before people say it yes hes got a no trade( dont know why holland gives them out like candy) but if he keeps playing on the 4th line and its clear its not working here why would he want to stay

agree helm should center 3rd and andersson 4th or the wing depending on sheahan ... thats a thing how is sheahan not on the roster , ferraro?? no chance for callahan? thats why i didnt like the drew miller contract ... why a 3 year deal?

and bertuzzi back??? no thanks man , like tootoo but he wont be back

He just needs to be better than Filppula, which he hasn't even come close to doing so far this season. I think even getting 20 points out of Weiss would be a stretch at this point. Neither player is worth $5 mil/year for 5 years, but at least Filppula did something while he was here.

I agree Weiss has been disappointing thus far, but you were talking like flip was consistently a 50+ point guy, which isn't the case. Also I agree neither is worth 5 million per. Weiss should turn it around though he has consistently put up around 50 points a year or more.

I am not sure but I thought both could need a change of scenery, if things aren't improving come trade deadline.Clarkson has a slightly higher caphit but at least provides a better compete level even if he doesn't score. My preference would for sure be Gardiner but I doubt Nonis would do this trade.

Tootoo is still signed next year. Unless you want to buy him out, he's going to be back. Or he just stays in the AHL, but hopefully he gets traded just to give him a shot at being in an NHL lineup regularly.

This team would be tops in the East if Weiss weren't so thoroughly useless.

If Helm keeps playing the way he has been, he's got the job IMO. Kind of like him trying to break his mold of career 3rd line C

Same with Andy. At many times now our 3rd line, with Andy at C, has been our best line out there.

Of course if this doesn't continue, I'll deny this conversation ever happened and promptly edit these posts

He has four points in 30 games thus far. I think 50 points is pretty much out of the question.

Helm would never have been on the 2nd line were Weiss not so ineffective and Datsyuk injured, and Andersson would therefore be on the 4th line. Andersson is, by the way, center on one of the league's most effective PK units.

I'm not disagreeing about that. I'm just saying he has always put up around 50 points. Now he just needs to break put of his funk, there's no reason to believe he won't, considering his level of talent

This. This as hard as my keyboard will allow me to.

Look at our healthy roster at the top around Weiss:

-Zetterberg started on pace for a career season before injuries slowed him in the last few games

-Datsyuk was his typical dominant self from day one

-Alfredsson despite inconsistent linemates (Weiss, invisible-until-recently Franzen) is not far off a point-per-game pace

-Franzen started extremely slow, part because of Weiss, part because... because typical Franzen. Now on fire.

The latter two players eventually overcame once Weiss was removed from their line. We left so many points on the table in the first two months of the season because we lacked a capable 2nd-line center, putting all of the pressure on the first line to score 1 or 2 goals with no support. Out of the 31 games played this season, the Wings have scored 2 goals 9 times, 1 goal 3 times, and been shutout twice. That is nearly half of our games with 2 goals or less, most near the beginning of the season, and many in 1-goal winnable games.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Helm on the second line but he would need more fire power on the wings for it to be a good second line in the NHL. Helm is capable though.

I think Babs is obsessed with keeping Dats and Z together because they have spoken about how much they like playing together. Which is all well and good but for the good of the team it makes more sense to have 2 legit lines. They probably said that because there wingers are often Bertuzzi, Abdelkader and Cleary which is ridiculous. These line are productive despite these players IMO
