Smite 399 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 15m 15 minutes ago LA puts Mike Richards on waivers. Also, NJ puts Tim Sestito on waivers. Is he a right handed shot and can he play defense?

martinezsvsu 240 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 No to Richards because we have Weiss. Sestito isn't good
Nevermind 363 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 I honestly think Weiss has more upside than Richards at this point.

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 I'm not sure about their cap situation, but if I was Toronto I'd probably claim him. I'm pretty sure Toronto is up against it, cap wise. Unless they're unloading Clarkson, I can't see them going after Richards. I think a team like Edmonton makes sense, or perhaps even Arizona with Vermette likely to leave. Depends on their internal cap. I think they're trying to shed money, at the moment. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
nawein 324 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 I was thinking Edmonton. They need vets and the guy is a cup champion. He has a ton of money/term left but at this point what would it hurt?
Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 I'm not sure about their cap situation, but if I was Toronto I'd probably claim him. Not sure if you're serious or not... Toronto already has some of the worst long-term contracts in the league in Clarkson, Phaneuf and Lupul. Don't think they need another one.

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 Wasn't Calgary offering to take on some bad contracts in exchange for picks, prospects, etc. during the off season? Wonder if they'd be willing to take Richards.

Don't think they need another one. I didn't know his contract was through 2019. I thought he was only signed for a couple more years. The term is the killer on that one. Yikes. Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 From Bob McKenzie... If Richards clears waivers, sent to AHL, $925K of $5.75M cap hit comes off LA's cap. So Richards would represent $4.825M of dead cap space.

Ram 240 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 From Bob McKenzie... Wow that's nuts. Does LA still have their buyout clause available? Or did that all expire after the end of the year last year? (Sorry, I'm completely lost without CapGeek...too much research.)

frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 I feel bad for him the guy is only 29 and if they have nobody better to replace him good luck. Richards brings energy and grit and a ton of leadership if Edmonton is passing on him then lol
cnot19 191 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 Considering Edmonton fans are whiny about them not being able to bring in guys like this during free agency a waiver claim by them seems like a smart move
PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 Count me in the minority of people who say this isn't the best thing for the Kings to do. I agree. Unless they were assured that someone would take him off waivers it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Otherwise, they'll now be stuck with his caphit either with him in the AHL or as a buyout in the off season. Is there another player they're trying to make room for? He can't be that much of a liability on 3rd line. You might as well keep him as depth and get something out of that contract. It seems like the better option would have been to trade him and retain some of the salary. He is 29 - I think someone would have taken a chance on him then. It seems less likely with that big of a caphit.

I mean Hopkins, Richards, Roy is much better than Hopkins, Roy ? ? only question left is does Edmonton have the cap space ?
Ram 240 Report post Posted January 26, 2015 And people think we have it bad with Franzen! Thing is, Kings have managed to win two Cups with Richards. Contract's probably a mistake, but a mistake they can afford to make, given the strength of the rest of their team.
