LA puts Mike Richards on waivers

I'm not sure about their cap situation, but if I was Toronto I'd probably claim him.

I'm pretty sure Toronto is up against it, cap wise. Unless they're unloading Clarkson, I can't see them going after Richards.

I think a team like Edmonton makes sense, or perhaps even Arizona with Vermette likely to leave. Depends on their internal cap. I think they're trying to shed money, at the moment.

Not sure if you're serious or not...

Toronto already has some of the worst long-term contracts in the league in Clarkson, Phaneuf and Lupul.

Don't think they need another one.

I didn't know his contract was through 2019. I thought he was only signed for a couple more years. The term is the killer on that one. Yikes.

From Bob McKenzie...

If Richards clears waivers, sent to AHL, $925K of $5.75M cap hit comes off LA's cap. So Richards would represent $4.825M of dead cap space.

From Bob McKenzie...

Wow that's nuts. Does LA still have their buyout clause available? Or did that all expire after the end of the year last year? (Sorry, I'm completely lost without CapGeek...too much research.)

Count me in the minority of people who say this isn't the best thing for the Kings to do.

I agree with you unless they have someone better to take his spot and has a salary less than the amount LA is saving

I agree. Unless they were assured that someone would take him off waivers it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Otherwise, they'll now be stuck with his caphit either with him in the AHL or as a buyout in the off season. Is there another player they're trying to make room for? He can't be that much of a liability on 3rd line. You might as well keep him as depth and get something out of that contract.

It seems like the better option would have been to trade him and retain some of the salary. He is 29 - I think someone would have taken a chance on him then. It seems less likely with that big of a caphit.

Can't believe the NHLPA accepted that stupid recapture penalty, some smart GM should go to his owner and challenge that bulls*** in court.

I mean Hopkins, Richards, Roy is much better than Hopkins, Roy ? ? only question left is does Edmonton have the cap space ?

And people think we have it bad with Franzen!

Thing is, Kings have managed to win two Cups with Richards. Contract's probably a mistake, but a mistake they can afford to make, given the strength of the rest of their team.
