The Petr Mrazek Appreciation Thread

Yeah forgot Howard was doing that well last season till his injury. Legace had a great regular season in '06. Was funny how he was offered a pretty substantial contract extension mid season but he didn't think it was enough and decided to wait Holland out for more. Then he crumbled in the playoffs and wanted to kill himself.

:scared:

If he wins.. Mr. Holland has quite a deal to make even if he's an RFA. Mrazek will get max dollars possible at his age and experience. They won't have any choice but to package Howard (and worst case scenario retain salary). We won't be able to afford a maxed salary goaltender and a $5.5 mill backup and still have to resign a bunch of players.. I don't even see us being able to resign a couple of guys like Miller or Helm. But I'm not sure of the math.. I'd have to go back and calculate.

Will be an interesting summer.

thats why parting with some wont break my heart if we get a good deal back for them obivously if its rental for rental no but if a team is willing to take a chance on our Pending RFAS or UFAS i wuldnt mind listening

I just noticed in the article above he was picked in the 5th round. Wonder why he wasn't taken before that? It's not like he was a big secret like Zetterberg. He played his junior hockey in the OHL and I remember seeing him play and he was damn good. I'm sure NHL scouts knew all about him. I guess it was just draft luck for Detroit again.

We have one of the best system's in the world when it comes to player to development, its not a coincidence that this keeps happening to us. Just like in football its not a coincidence that first and second round picks have been busts over the years with the Lions.

Yup couldn't help but think this. It was kind of hard to believe we suddenly had a Carey Price-like goaltender. The difference between the elite and good is consistency

See the guy in my avatar for the evidence that consistency is paramount. Elite is hard to come by, but Petr has all the hallmarks of a goalie who will make his mark on the NHL. I have every confidence in him, and don't worry about a couple of bad games where the D simply did not show up, nor did the rest of the team play to their potential. They know all it.

You're half right, its consistency and superior skill set. You can be the most consistent goalie in the world, but if another goalie is also consistent but you have superior lateral movement, quicker reflexes etc. you will be the better goalie. Such a tough position.

Having a bad game or two means nothing. Patrick Roy is one of the greatest of all times, but as Wings fans we can easily remember one of the worst game 7 performance in history, as well as the epic games that led to his exit from the Habs. Not that Mrazek is Roy, but the point is that everyone has bad games and bed stretches.

Agree with kickazz, Mrazek is our #1.

I would have a hard time forgiving my goalie if he single handedly lost a game 7 tbh

Maybe if he hadn't won their team 2 stanley cups of which he was also the MVP as Conn Smythe winner.. One can definitely forgive a goalie like Roy for a bad playoff game 7 with his previous track record.

It would be a tough pill to swallow nontheless

I think we can all appreciate how hard it would be to be a goalie

Of course. Remember - even The Dominator was heavily criticized in 2008 when he did bad in the first few playoff games and Osgood basically took over. But we still loved Hasek at the end of the day.

Tough to be a goalie and even tougher to be an elite one especially since you're expected to be good all the time.

A player has a bad game, people dont notice. A goalie has a bad game "he lost you the game". Hardest position to play in hockey.

Most important position, a good/bad goalie can swing a game by his talents alone.

I for one am not sweating over Mrazek having a few bad games. I however do get some urgency sensations when looking at the standings. Every point matters.

Thus, if Mrazek feels he's off he should communicate that and let Howard give it a shot for a few. If that is possible, politics and personality may not permit this.

With that said I think he's gonna shine today @Ottawa if he gets the start.

The fact that this is even a discussion is downright insane. Are there people who really think that the greats never had a bad two game stretch in their careers?

I was always say to people who question the talent of a great goalie for having a bad game, or losing a game for the team to show me a goalie who is 82-0 with a 0.00 GAA and 100% SP lol.
