Without little Caesars pizza we don't have the best owner in sports. Get over it people, you don't own the team and have no say so just deal with it.

He's not the best owner in sports. He may have once been, but he doesn't seem to care about the Wings anymore.

Rooney family (Steelers), Kraft (Patriots) probably regarded as the best in sports. Illitch might be the best owner in NHL though but not sure about sports overall. Maybe if the Tigers didn't lose the World Series in 2012 Illitch could have claimed the title.

But I digress.

Anyways, I don't think the name or logo issue will make Illitches any less respected by fans. I don't think anyone in the press or social media has said anything negative about them. Folks just pissed about the name and thats that.

Well fans can be pissed about a decision and still respect the owner right? I don't know much about the Rooney family but I agree with you on Kraft, seems like a great owner who is willing to go the full distance for his players. Sadly I think Mr. I has shifted his focus from the Wings to some of his other teams it may be just a feeling but yeah. Chris to me is still hard to judge he comes away with an extreme business first/fan later approach.

For me it's not just the name "LCA" but the fact that they are going from a deserving one (Joe Louis), to a corporate sponsored one and yes I get it it's about the bottom line and whatever but I don't have to like it. An Original 6 franchise should be proud to show off tradition and shove it upon everyone daring to enter the building so to speak.

Remember how awesome that place looked at first? That whole arena had red lights and the Winged Wheel on top of the roof holly crap I was like "yeah, that's Wingsstyle" but now it will just be another bland arena without a rich history like the JLA. While saying that I'm still very sure the inside will be top notch in all possible ways but all that doesn't create an intimidating atmosphere, noise generated by the fans does.

Yeah who cares about the fans, what do they do for the team. The Red Wings would be way better off without all the fans that spend thousands and thousands of dollars on tickets.

If they came out and said LED lights are a go... the stadium is back to being badass. Otherwise it's just any other arena. I guess I think it's just too plain right now. The LED lights were something to brag about.

Honestly I was fine with JLA and didn't feel like a new arena was necessary. The LED lights is what sold me when they came out with the presentation couple years ago.. I was like DAM!!!!!

I'm more pissed about the giant little ceasars logo that will be on the roof. I get corporate naming, but this thing is just going to be a giant billboard. To come out and say the LED roof was just a placeholder, and was only for renderings is a joke. What else in those renderings will not be built?

I think there should be some sort of middle ground, have pictures of the great players rotating, the Wings logo on top of the roof while the Wings are playing but show the LC logo whenever they aren't.

after watching that presser over and over I'm still pissed by the reaction Wilson gave after being asked about the lights: smug phase it was just a render almost laughed it of...wish the hiring of that moron was just a render.

Also Chris spent most of his time talking about companies, brands and expansion of his dad's business not one word about this awesome franchise. The whole presser felt sooo unwings like, it's sooo scary to think that one day this guy might run the Wings

Someone said above that people are complaining because LC's pizza sucks? It's more than that. Is any other NHL arena named after a fast food restaurant? It's just a dumb idea. Illitch didn't name Tiger Stadium Little Caesar's Stadium, but all of a sudden it's a good name for the new home of the Red Wings? Not surprising though I guess since he seems to care about the Tigers a lot more these days. The Wings have won four cups since he's owned the team, so maybe he's taking a break from caring too much about them until he gets his Tigers a World Series. Thanks Mikey.

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Wouldn't a regular roof make much more sense as a placeholder? It feels like a bait and switch to the city of Detroit. The way that press conference went, it came across like they never had any intentions of building the LED roof.

Yeah I think it was to make the arena look badass wIthout ever having any real intentions of doing it. The most disappointing thing is, neither Chris nor Wilson gave an honest expectation on why just "it was a render", this thing looked so damn cool, everyone was buzzing about the LED module. The possibilities would have been endless, from displaying the Wings roster to Kid Rock CD covers...Heck they could have used this stuff for the grand opening to really show of what this franchise is all about.

fans of other teams would have been sooo envy but no all we get is a business first presser and not one word about the Wings! if this whole thing is just a giant bill board the Wings would be better of staying in the old, proven joe Louis of course with a few renovations

The LED Wings logo was just a "placeholder". What a joke. They almost dodged the question too I see. That roof would have been mindblowing in how cool it looked. Now we can expect "THE biggest Little Caesar's character in the world". How could any grown man say that without laughing.

who cares if it's named after restaurant? Like was mentioned before, airline companies and banks are way more corrupt than little ceaser's, yet nobody complains about stadiums being named after those companies

I'm surprised more people don't realize how much little ceaser's has been involved in promoting and developing youth hockey in michigan. That alone makes it a better choice than a lot of other companies imo

Here's the problem with your obviously self aggrandizing post..

As a LONG time Wings fan who's not from Detroit and in my early 40s, I had (and still have) no idea who Joe Louis was. At one point, I had to look it up. I quickly then stowed it away in the back of my brain near the 'who-gives-a-sh**-about-that' zone.

I couldn't give less of a care about boxing. Can't stand the 'sport'. To me, it's pointless. Therefore, I couldn't care about the boxers either. So the whole 'Joe Louis is sacred' movement is, in my opinion, ludicrous. Not everyone likes boxing, or for that matter, Joe Louis.

So, the whole - it was named after JL, it was EPIC - is ridiculous.

Truth be told, in our heart of hearts - we all KNEW it would be named after/by an Illitch/Olympia entity - anyone who thought otherwise was wearing the proverbial rose-colored glasses. The LCA is *meh* as far as arena names go, however, the stupid logo on the roof is

RID...

wait for it..

ICULOUS.

Joe Louis (with his 66 wins and 52 by Knockout) was LEGEND

wait for it.

DARY.

This is your way of telling me you agree with me about the logo on the roof ;)

Yes, Joe Louis was a boxer and he has the record for holding the heavyweight championship (almost 12 years), but his cultural importance is much greater than that. I'm not a boxing fan (I think it's barbaric), but I don't think you have to be to understand his importance.

He's not the first African-American Heavyweight campion, that's Jack Johnson, but Johnson received such racist backlash that no blacks were even given a shot at the championship by promoters in the 19 years after he was champ. Joe Louis overcame this and became the champ and a national hero and I don't think any African American had achieved that level of national icon up to that point in history. Add to that it was the depression and he was from a poor family (1 of 8 kids and his father was sent to an insane asylum permanently when he young) who fled the racism of the South to Detroit and I think you can appreciate why he was such a figure of hope for people and why he deserved to have a building named after him.

He also was the first African-American golfer to play a with the PGA (on the amateur circuit).

For me not liking their pizza has nothing to do with my decision on the name of the arena; I understand why the name was chosen, to me it is just a bit of a an oddity, it is not terrible

But what is terrible is the giant little pizza guy on the roof - anyone remember My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie where the parents house sticks out in the rest of the neighborhood? That is how it is striking me

Why stop there, just make the top of the arena an oval pizza and make it looks like a $5 dollar of and ready

Holy f*** that guy about blew his load announcing they would have the biggest little Caesars logo on the roof. Look, I get the whole keep it in the company and the city and glad it was someone that helps in the community blah blah blah. I appreciate that, I really do. But the name is STUPID. The logo is STUPID. And they drliberately gave a false sense of excitement about the structure to get people on board and then said oh yeah this CARTOON is going to be on the roof. What a ff***ing joke.

I don't get that at all. Like, due to the image being a registered trademark and the amount of restriction that places on the use of their logo, you would think he would have a little less awe about the fact that it will be the biggest logo out there. Its kinda like winning a contest where you're the only contestant and then creaming yourself over it.
