Next 8 games may crush this team.

2 points out of last in the East, and the Isles have 2 games in hand on them.  6 points out of the 8th spot, need to jump 5 teams to get there.  Yup, they're on a roll!

Sorry Dickie its even worse as the 8th spot has 2 games in hand on the Wings so the 8th spot is potentially 54 points so the Wings are actually 10 points out of the 8th spot.

So for grins lets take Boston's 47 games played as the mark for everyone in the Atlantic and assume everyone wins their games in regulation

Montreal    64

Toronto      60...yeah thats right...hell has frozen Babs is worth the $$

Ottawa      60

=====================wild card space =============

NY             61

Carolina    55

===============================================

Philly        52

NYI          52

Boston    51

Fl            50

Detroit    50

Buffalo   49

NJ         49

Tampa   49

Wings are  still 5 points out of the hunt. Been a looooooooooong time since we have seen what the bottom of the barrel looks like.  Plus we have the doldrums of February coming up where historically the Wings nap.

You really should include GP in this as it can be very deceiving.

For example; Boston has 47 GP, TO has 42, we have 44. If TO wins those 2 games they have on us, they are up 10 points. If we win the 3 games Boston has up on us, we are down 1 point from Boston.

I'm not sure why there is such a discrepancy in GP between some teams.

I did hence the statement I ran everyones games played to Boston's 47 with the assumption everyone won in regulation. IMHO its easier to calculate where you sit if you simply take the team with the most GP and match everyone to them and assume wins. Just my way

Did Blash become a member here and listen to the gripping? XO and Jenson on the 3rd pair again last night. Just sayin we might have what we have been asking for with letting the youth play

If he is coming to LGW for advice I want him to know we will not steer him wrong.  Put your faith in our hands, Blash, and we'll take good care of you, but the only way we're making the playoffs is if you do exactly what we tell you and nothing else. You can start by putting $50,000 in a brown paper bag and leaving it by the old oak tree in the park at 3pm this Friday.  Return here before the following game for your gameday lineup.  Don't ask questions.  Don't let Holland know. Remember this only works if we have complete cooperation.  We know you'll do the right thing.

If only we (LGW) could all agree on a lineup every night... :lol:

Lol.  Nobody is saying the season is saved, or we'll probably make the playoffs.  Just that we're playing better than a month ago, or that's something to be happy and excited about.  Otherwise, why bother to watch? Unless you're the type of person who gets off on being bitchy and miserable that is.

Being ubiquitously cynical about the team is just as useless as being ubiquitously apologetic about it. At the very least it completely undermines the possibility of rational discourse, which is the entire point of a discussion board, and at most it makes you (and everyone else) a miserable dick.

I'm hoping the Wings can replicate what the Sens had done a few years ago by finishing strong, and sneak in the back door of the playoffs.

I hope that too.  But if they don't make it, I'm still happy to see the team getting better.  I like seeing the young guys rising to the occasion and earning more ice time and responsibility.  I like seeing Blashill slowly realizing what's working, and how best to utilize the talent he has.  And I like seeing a team, and organization, not rolling over and giving up because of a bad season.  There's a lot to improve upon obviously, but if you find yourself wishing we fail (so we get a high draft pick) you might as well just throw in the towel for the remainder to the season and take up a hobby or something.  It would be better for you in the long run.  I like watching hockey, and the Red Wings, too much for that.

4 potential outcomes, ranked worst to best

Go on a run, make Holland think they have a chance so he doesn't sell and maybe even buys at the deadline and they miss the playoffs.

Actually squeak into the playoffs just to lose in 4 or 5 games

Hover around the 8th draft spot

Go back to how they played most of the year and get a shot at #1 overall.

I see you've left out another option.

Improve by optimizing your lineup and systems, improve as your young, talented, players grow and get better, make the playoffs and maybe win a round or two.  Hockey teams aren't static.  They can actually get better as the season goes along.

Ive more or less mentioned this before and I know some people will disagree but if I could choose a roster to take to the playoffs I have more optimism about the skill on this year's roster compared to the one that took Tampa Bay to game 7 a couple years ago.  They've severely underperformed and if Blashill could somehow manage to maximize this team's ability I think they could do some damage in the postseason.  I'm not all that optimistic it'll happen, but I absolutely think the talent is there.
