This trade is fine, so I'm picking nits here.  But given the recent reports that the defenseman market was thin, and that there was a lot of interest in Jensen, why not wait until Monday and see if you couldn't get someone to give a 2nd rounder in this year's draft?  Maybe it doesn't happen, maybe it doesn't matter if it did, but I don't think the return was so good that they needed to jump right now.

Just saw this... it may be a good sign that Kenny is pinching his pennies.

Over 20 members online. I guess Holland must have made a trade, eh. Semi decent return for Jensen. Will probably be a late 2nd, but better than a late 3rd, which is what I was expecting. Don't know much about the player, but from what I've read and seen, he seems like a guy worth taking a chance on, "change of scenery" and all of that. Nothing to lose.

I still don't see why this trade was concluded today. Something isn't making sense to me, unless they genuinely liked Bowey as a prospect which I don't understand.

I have to assume Holland believed it was the best return he was gonna get and that he had good reason to believe so.

Why does any trade happen before 2:59 pm EST on TDL day? For that matter...

Or, you know, he has Monday tee time.

If we wanted to re-sign Kronwall wouldn't he just take...Kronwall's spot?

Not if you want to carry both Hronek and Cholowski full time next season and give them significant ice time.

Monday is not one of Holland's 3 work days.

Then he's probably happy he got shipped to Michigan where it's legal.

Is weed legal in Michigan already? I honestly didn't know if true.

Feel kinda bad for Holland. Recent bad contracts aside, and after what? 20 something years as manager, he now has to graciously concede to his former captain. I'm excited about Yzerman, but can't be fun for him. I look forward to seeing him in Seattle.

Good deal for Jensen. Holland getting a 2nd rounder out of the deal is another feather in his cap for a man who's never had to rebuild before. Bowey seems like an Evander Kane type. Hopefully he can get his off ice issues in order and contribute.

IMO I think the immediate extension by Washington for Jensen was a little rushed and shortsighted. Obviously they are praying he his is the next Kempny. I see the strategy being that they wanted to lock him up before his price goes up after a successful playoff run, but I would not have pulled that trigger myself. 4 years is long. Jensen could turn out to be their permanent 6/7 man and they will regret it if so. Kempny's are rare not the norm.

I like Bowey. But I should note that the realistic expectation is that he's never going to be more than a depth guy.

Hopefully he finds new life in Detroit. Either way, we get a 2nd, which is good.

So like, Jensen for another Jensen plus a second? Sounds great!

Where is this talk about Bowey's skating being a cause for concern coming from?...

"Bowey is a dynamic defenseman who has continued to improve his overall game. His best asset is his skating abilities, which he uses with and without the puck..."
"Bowey is mobile along the blueline, and makes it difficult for opposing forwards to cover him because he could move laterally or move down the boards with the puck in a hurry. He has so many options due to his speed, that opponents are half a step late in trying to read what his next move will be..."
"Bowey is a gifted defenseman with a lot of upside. He still has a few kinks in his game, but there are some scouts who rave about him. He is a quality skater, if not high end, with a powerful stride, good balance, four-way bursts, and above-average top speed that enables him to close gaps quickly. He shows a willingness to engage, that along with a solid strength level, can help him erase checks off of pucks effectively. He also makes plays as a stick checker. Bowey has very good ability as a puck mover, whether he is rushing the puck out of his own zone, or moving it around on the power play. When he is on his game, his offensive hockey sense can be sterling. He has what one scout describes as a heavy shot from the blue line, adding to his multi-dimensional offensive ability. However, scouts have concerns about his defensive play, particularly in his risky decision-making—he sometimes gambles ineffectively when deciding to pinch or rush. His defensive zone play is not bad, but he is inconsistent with his positioning. Still, it is important to note that he did improve on that skill in the second half of this season.
Very smooth skater already has a pro stride… Does a great job advancing the puck and using his agility in defensive coverage… Not an elite offensive player but should be a capable 2nd unit PP player… Possesses tremendous athletic upside… Needs to continue to improve dzone positioning.

I think Bowey is more than just a throw-in like some people seem to be suggesting. He is a bit of a reclamation project, but the raw skill is definitely there. The biggest question for me, is like others have mentioned, can he sort out any off-ice issues, and get his game back on track. I think he can. He was projected to be a top pair defenseman just a few short years ago. I'd say top four is still possible, but at worst, a solid bottom pair defenseman. Which is all Jensen ever was, and he's 5 years younger.

Right now, I'd say this looks like a very good trade by Holland, and it could be an absolute steal if Bowey lives up to the hype a few years ago... He's still only 23. Jensen was what? 26 when he finally cracked the Red Wings full time? Looking forward to see him suit up in the next few games...
