    Spezza Requests Trade

It's a limited stat. That's how I think of it. It can tell you something, but, generally, don't take it at face value. Case in point: Jason Spezza this season. The Sens sucked this season. (Apologies to the resident Sens fan.) They absolutely leaked goals. Neither of their goalies could stop a beach ball. And yet, Spezza was, I think (haven't formally checked), about a point-per-game player. So, on the second line of a defensively responsible team like the Wings? I tend to think he'd be a difference-maker, without having the baggage of a captaincy and being The Guy. If I'm Spezza, that's what I want. What happened to the Ducks? I thought they were in on him? That'd be an interesting match. Take away the 15 goals Franzen's going to score against the Sens every season and they become a playoff team.

I don't want Spezza on this team, but this plus minus talk is silly. You can't use his -26 this year against him and then fail to give him credit for his career +53. He's got a better career plus minus than Mike Richards, who was a finalist for the Selke Trophy. Either it's a terrible stat and shouldn't be used at all, or it's a good enough stat which has to be used to validate a player just as much as it's used to denigrate them. Personally, I don't think Spezza's a great defensive player. BUT, he's better than his -26 indicated this season, and he's probably worse than his career high +26 indicates as well.

Holland has made up his mind...he just made a decision you don't like. He's not going all in to win right now, he's banking on the prospects keeping us contenders long term. Whether he's right or not only time will tell. Personally I think this is the worst draft in years to trade up in..I'd rather trade down or trade away the 1st round pick. Buffalo has 3, 2nd round picks I'd rather get them if we're looking to deal. It would be utter insanity. Ekblad may not even be the first defenceman taken in this draft, or the one with the most successful career. If he's lucky he'll become a top pairing defenceman, but he's far from a Franchise player.

    Trading up?

That’s fine. If it’s doable in that way. I just have a hard time stomaching the overzealousness of people who get all horned up for prospects to the point where they’d trade our friggin captain. It’s sensationalism, and knee-jerky, and reeks of fan-boy fantasy. But I guess that’s what happens when you haven’t had a top 5 draft pick since 1990.

Getting a guy like Spezza would be a very good move depending on cost and if he agrees to an extension in advance. He would be our best offensive forward the day he arrives. His career points per game average is better than Datsyuk and Z. Not much, but it is better. He has good size: 6-3/220 and is a right handed shot. No he is not a banger. he does use his size to protect the puck. he is great in the puck possession game. 4 different years he has scored 30+ goals. Not he turns 31 tomorrow and has had back issues, which is a concern. But he would make us better. All that being said, will we get him? No. Even though he is a Holland type of a player.

The thing about this possibility is, as far as I can tell, it's totally doable. We wouldn't have to sell the farm, or ship out Z or D. We'd probably just have to move Ericsson (Tallon wants a big-bodied top-four defenseman), a pick, and a prospect. For Aaron Ekblad? I would do that. But that's just me.

If only we had traded Yzerman in 2002 for that draft’s top rated d-man: Jay Bouwmeester. We’d be ******* set right now.

Ekblad is an awesome prospect but he also plays the toughest position to transition to the pro game in. There are all kinds of highly touted defenceman who have fizzled out without reaching their potential, and its a position we are deepest in prospect wise. If we had the 1st overall pick I wouldn't hesitate to take him but that's entirely different than trading away our best player for the right to pick him. We'd be making a far bigger hole than we're fixing.

    Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

Realistically, if we don't get a forward of Kesler's caliber, and a top 2 Dman, D and Z won't win another cup.

Haven't we learned by now + - isn't really a good stat. I mean look at his team. When you're on a bad team your stats will look worse simple as that.

"Possible" franchise player for our Captain? There have been plenty of 1st overall picks that didn't turn out to be what we thought they would. I'll keep Z thank you.

What good is a guy who scores 35-40 goals a year if he's on the ice for 70-75 against? I'd rather the guy who scores 20 but is a plus player, especially when you're talking about a center. I'm not opposed to going after Spezza but he'll have to drastically change his game to fit into Babcock's system.. Nobody is going to take Weiss under any circumstances, nor are the Wings looking to deal Franzen. Ottawa wants a 1st, a roster player and a prospect for Spezza.

Most likely because with the Panthers, prospects are thrust into starting roles before they understand the game and make mistakes, lose confidence and eventually fade out. One of the reasons we are so successful is because our prospects are prepared and confident when they finally get starting roles.

He might be 6'3, and 220... but he's also S-A-W-F-T, saaaawft. As far as his actual destination, I think a Spezza for Kesler swap makes a ton of sense, but I'm sure they'd want to tweak it beyond a straight up deal.

    17 Years Ago Today

That's why no Cup win by the Wings will likely compare to the one in 1997 for me. After watching them through the 80s, to get so close then get crushed by the Devils in '95, it just felt like they were never going to win one. Thinking that Yzerman may become one of those great players who never get to hoist the Cup. It's what made that one so special.

    Kesler still wants a trade.....

If the rumors are true of Thornton, Kesler, and Spezza all being on the market, it will drive the price down. Fewer teams competing for the same resources. Basic econ guys. This could work in our favor if Holland..........nevermind......
