Exactly my train of thought on this one. I almost feel like Petr needs to look better during training camp/preseason to get the first starts, but ultimately they're going to split the first 20 games pretty evenly. Basically, I think Howard starts the first game or two of the year, but Mrazek is going to be given a chance very early and run with it. As long as Petr or Howie don't play themselves out of starts, it's going to be a balanced schedule for both guys, IMO.

That Nyquist contract keeps looking better.

Realgud points everyone. I've been swayed and forced to change my vote again! The major difference between Nyquist and Tatar is that Nyquist is a goose, and Tatar is a Mexican water bug. Now the thing about geese is that some can lay golden eggs, like Gus did during the 13-14 season. However, to lay golden eggs, geese have to be loose. Hence the phrase "loosey goosey". Because geese are not always loose, a goose like Nyquist will be streakier from time to time. Being a Mexican water bug, Tatar is obviously more lively and quick with the puck. But the main advantage of being a Mexican water bug is that it is a made-up insect that only exists inside the mind of Mickey Redmond. So basically the sky is the limit on Tatar's potential and what he will develop into. Don't ask me why Mickey's made-up bug is Mexican. I know it's boring nerdy science stuff i got from a spread sheet, but the facts are there. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

Larkin is the safest bet, (such smooth progression) and at the moment has little competition for his projected role. Mantha has an upside that may be even greater but a few more question marks, and may have more competition. Neither will see more than a handful of games this year, just as mantha was very unlikely to make the team even before his injury. Looking at lower draft picks, AA is the one who looks most nailed on at NHL level and probably has the highest ceiling, but I think Holmstrom has an alluring mix of intensity and smarts. D-wise, I think all are 2nd/3rd pairing guys, but I love marchenko's gone and think he has upside...

I think Gus has more talent to work with than Tatar, but I think Tatar makes up for that with how hard he plays every shift, and how involved he gets.
