The value of the whole "4 firsts" thing IMO depends on the team. If a lottery team did it, I think TO should take it. You could potentially get 4 top 5 picks. If a regular playoff team did it, I wouldn't even consider it. Lets take a team like the SJ Sharks, most likely they will be picking in the 22-30 range over the next 4 years, the chances of any of those picks resulting in a Marner type player are extremely low.

If I was Dubas I'd strongly consider taking the four 1sts right now. It would save them a significant amount of cap hell in the future, and they will still have a very strong team without Marner. (8) 1st round picks instead of (4) over the next 4 years could potentially set them up as a perennial contender for a longggg time too. I think the fact that Dubas might opt to take the picks should scare a lot of teams away. Not being able to sign Marner because of the Horton and Clarkson LTIR kicking in at the start of the season, could be Dubas almost daring a team to offersheet Marner.

Dubas screwed the pooch with Matthews by opening up the checkbook without any hesitation...Also at this point in time it looks as though Nylander got the best of Dubas as well. I would be shocked if Marner took anything less than $10 million...Dubas set himself up for this.

How I suspect the Griffs will likely look this season: Rasmussen - Veleno - Zadina Puempel - Turgeon - Svechnikov Smith - Pearson - Terry Elson - MacLeod - Pope Ford Cholowski - Kaski Hicketts - Saarijarvi Lashoff - Lindstrom McIlrath Pickard Larsson The top line (if it materializes) looks beastly and well balanced. Big intimidating dirty areas and net front guy + fast center who can drive play + lethal sniper. Svech obviously needs to have a big season to return to relevancy. Kaski and Larsson should be exciting players to watch too.

    >My heart says, "HELL YEAH, BROTHER!" >My head says, "Pump the brakes. 20 games means nothing, whether we're talking about a line or an entire team." I think back to 2013-14. Tatar-Sheahan-Jurco was an awesome line for a few games. Nyquist put up 48 points in 57 games. Did any of that carry over into subsequent seasons? Not really. Small sample sizes have made and broken careers. Beware!

You're not wrong. And it would have been interesting to see what Holland would have done with this off-season too. Does he make these meaningless stop gap moves that Yzerman did, or does he do a more Jeff Gorton approach and play with the big names to accelerate this *****? I get the feeling Holland would have spent more money this offseason for better or worse. I also don't necessarily agree with the notion that Yzerman needs, or is taking, a year to evaluate this team. He's been an NHL GM working in the same division as us, and by all accounts was scouting for us this entire past year. He also officially worked side by side with Holland until Ken's departure. He knows what we have and don't have. He's not evaluating this team. He's tanking. And yeah changing GM's because fans are unsatisfied seems dumb, but we do pay the bills so to speak. Gotta keep customers happy. The warm glow of Yzerman should keep a lot of fans onboard during the next 3 years of sucking. Fans: "Caertainly this is rock bottom for our franchise" Yzerman: This really connects with my inner 1993 university student studying sociology. Tribal tattoos will be cool forever. Weed cures cancer. We had a stretch of 15-20 games where we had one of the best lines in the league.
