Talking Tootoo
whitewolf406 and one other reacted to GMRwings1983 for a post in a topic
I don't remember him taking any more dumb penalties than Smith, Quincey or Abdelkader. What are these penalties that Tootoo took this season? I don't remember him costing us too many games. He's not one-dimensional either. Look at his career numbers and then look at Tony Twist's or Stu Grimson's. How is Tootoo one-dimensional? He fights and he lays good bodychecks. Scores as many points as most 4th liners in the league. What is he not doing right? I feel like there's too many posters here who look at all 4th line fighters as being in the same basket. Too much stereotyping. -

Visors Required - New NHL Players in '13-'14
P. Marlowe reacted to Nightfall for a post in a topic
This is just like people saying that they want a no helmet law when it comes to riding a motorcycle. These perfectly intelligent and trained adults know the risks. So there should a no helmet law right? If someone gets into an accident and has a head injury which puts them in a care facility for the rest of their lives, they will be going after the insurance company, the driver, the state, and everyone else they can get money from. The problem is that these hockey players are going to be fine with it until one of them takes a stick to the eye and then their career comes to an abrupt end. Like Manny Malhotra who has played in 9 games since his eye injury and it looks like his career is finished. He is going to get as much from NHL disability as he can. There are times when people must be protected from themselves. Just like people should be forced to wear a helmet when they ride a motorcycle, players should be told to wear visors. They aren't growing eyeballs in petri dishes, and all it takes is one stick to end your career. I think that visors, like helmets in the past, should be grandfathered in. -

Brunner Contract Talks
Hockeymom1960 reacted to Uncle Danny for a post in a topic
I think you meant 17 goals per SEASON, not game. If he was doing 17 goals per game, people would already be saying "Wayne who?" Your points are good ones, though. As for Brunner, I would have absolutely zero qualms with giving him $3.5 for two years for all of the reasons already mentioned. You seriously don't let a player like him leave over $1m, assuming he'll take the shorter term contract. He brings something to the table we sorely lack, and is (hopefully) just getting warmed up. On the flip side, he'd be a fool to ask for a longer term deal or to bolt from a team that he fits well on, gave him his shot, has a winning tradition, and has linemates he's proven to have some chemistry with. With a two year deal, he'll only be 29 next time his bell comes up and still very much in his prime. To my mind, that situation is the safest bet for all parties concerned. He doesn't wind up playing for a doormat for five years and busting, gets a reasonable amount of money and a lot of great experience. We get some scoring we desperately need at a reasonable price, and aren't locked into anything if he Leinos. -

I don't understand how people can be so down on Sammy. He was out all season with injuries. He played what 2 games? But that means that he is useless? As far as Hudler, people may not like him but he has averaged 17 goals a game throughout his career. He had 20 4 of the past 5 years and 10 in 42 games this year. He's not a Rocket Richard candidate but he's certainly not useless. -

I've did a little maintenance work in some Walmarts. I could be hanging a door or painting a wall, fairly low risk work but it is mandatory to wear gloves, steel toed boots, long sleeved shirt, hard hat, high viz vest and eye protection. I don't have 6'3" 200lb men coming at me with sticks but its designed to help me go home in the same nick I left the house in the morning. It's about changing attitudes, it's unacceptable for people to get seriously hurt in a life changing way in the workplace. Used to be people wouldn't wear their high viz, now you can't get people to take them off. Give the visor rule time, if it helps one guy to be able to see his grand kids and tell them what it was like to be a Wing without being blind in one eye or have a scared face from an errant stick is that not worth it? It's not about dressing like a 9th century Knight, it's about protecting bits of the anatomy that don't get better with rest and recouperation. -

I'm not saying that I personally have a solution, but I know what we already have and what we need. Like Clarkson or Horton as was mentioned. -

I agree with everyone leaning towards the idea that we already have enough smallish forwards who are pass first. Give me size and goal scoring before Weiss -

What's up with this "holier-than-thou" attitude that so many Wings fans have developed? It's getting to the point where only The Amish can play for Detroit ... except "The Amish Mafia"; they're too "thug" for this organization. I mean, nobody wanted Jeff Carter because he would have been a "bad seed". Nobody wanted Bertuzzi because of "the incident". It seemed like most fans liked Avery when he was here, but then hated him after he left. Most fans had no problem with the Chelios trade, and he was a pretty dirty player in his Montreal and Chicago days. Was Dallas Drake "Detroit material"? Drake was a better goal scorer earlier in his career, but both he and Tootoo play similar games/roles, and Drake was a HUGE presence for Detroit in the '08 Cup run. I think Tootoo could have brought that same presence and intensity if he had been given the chance. I'm just really not understanding the Tootoo hate on here. I can understand not liking him from his Nashville days, but he's here now, and he brought something to Detroit that this team sorely lacked: TOUGHNESS! He played *mostly* disciplined hockey, came to the defense of his teammates, and probably would have scored more goals than Abdelkadfer had he been given the luxury of playing with Datsyuk. I think people will be glad he's on this team next season, though without a true enforcer or some size up front, Detroit might still be in trouble. -
1 pointWow man, can you get any more arrogant? Maybe some fans don't have the money to go travel to Grand Rapids? Some require staying the night which can lead to pretty high expenses. Not everyone can attend consistent games. Yes, I know Grand Rapids games are cheap. I've had the luxury of sitting on the glass because of how cheap tickets are, it doesn't mean I can attend every single game though. What you ignore is that fans can still follow a team and cheer for them while not attending games. Social media and online streaming make this very possible. Not every fan has the luxury of attending every game, like you. You really want to call them bandwagoners because they maybe wanted to splurge and spend the extra money to go see them live for once? It was a special occasion. People tend to splurge when the occasion is special. Do you attend every single Red Wings game? Do you watch them on television sometimes because you can't attend games? I suppose you're just a bandwagoner if you don't attend all these games every season and just go to a single playoff game. My god man, get off the high horse.

I don't understand how or why Tootoo should be bought out. He did exactly what was expected of him. Also, the "one-dimensional" argument baffles me. He put up 8 points in 42 games. For comparison, Emmerton put up 8 in 48. When I think of one-dimensional players, I think of John Scott and Jody Shelley. And the notion that "he takes stupid penalties" is laughable, considering guys like Smith and Abdelkader have, on several occasions, taken idiotic penalties at the worst possible times during games. Don't remember Tootoo blowing any games for us. -

Brunner WANTS to be a better player and you can see that as he is developing his game to try to be more helpful defensively. You can't say that about all wings players. -

Which UFA would help the Wings the most?
SaCkaveli20 gave a reaction for a post in a topic
So has Franzen. He has played in 117 games in those 3 years and scored 11 goals, Franzen scored 14 in 41 this year.. Franzen is one of our biggest and most physical forwards as well as our best goal scorer. It's ridicKulous to say Penner is another Franzen. It's too bad you can't appreciate being lucky (or are you a bandwagoner?) enough to be a fan of the best sports organization in North America(maybe the world) over the last 3 decades. But go ahead and continue to ***** and whine. I love our team. -
