Tatar is a really good player despite having a couple of down seasons in a row (mostly due to coaching and bad chemistry due to constant line changes). It's hard to look at his puck possession metric from 2013-15 and not be impressed. I really think he's better than Rick Nash, whom the Bruins grossly overvalued. 
Still, this is a deal that you make ten times out of ten.

I just don't understand why NHL teams hire former players as GM's.

MLB- every (successful) front office is hiring analytical, computer geeks 
NBA- same as MLB
NFL- the greatest football mind of all time is the GM of the Patriots, everyone else is so much below them (even though they did lose the SB because of a funky playcall)
NHL- former players, former players, former players

You know what the sickest thing about the Penguins repeating is?
They're essentially the 2009 Red Wings. With all the injuries, they keep winning, they keep being great at puck movement, they still have good goaltending and they've got the best coach in the NHL. The 2009 Red Wings didn't repeat. But this Penguins team is probably going to do it.

The red wings are currently bottom 5 in score adjusted corsi, bottom 10 in scoring chances, bottom 10 in high danger scoring chances and also just as bad in scoring chances against. Id say they belong right where they are. 27th in the league. Bring on the draft.

Even if it hadn't been deflected, pretty stupid of you to conclude that Petr isn't our #1 based on a 1 goal sample size. I'd maybe say that if his mediocre play extends to ~30 games.

Pitt deserved that oscar. And yes, Corsi matters and the Red Wings are not a very good team and will regress.

1. Grit
2. Penalty killing
3. Faceoff win percentage
Only makes sense that Glendening does all 3 of these pretty well
