LIDDYGIBBY5 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Anyone know if it is a two way deal?
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Didn't see this one coming. Good signing though, I've got no complaints.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Calm down. All this means is Howard will have to earn the back up job. Exactly. Dont just hand the job to Howard by default. So signing a veteran for this doesn't surprise me but Conklin signing here does. I would have thought he would have a better shot to be the for sure #2 somewhere else. He knows coming here that he's going up against Howard and might get sent down. Anyone know if this is a two-way deal? If it's not and Howard gets the job he has to be waived first before going down to GR.
wingsrock34 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Pretty happy to see this I only like about 2 'tenders this year that fit our needs and he was one of them. I say thumbs up.
Reilly 24 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Rather have Kolzig but this guy did look good with Pittsburgh, Solid Deal. What? Did you see Conklin play last year? This is a steal for $750,000.
Systemfel 33 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Good. Definitely liking this signing.
JayUp88 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 I was always a fan, he helped out the pens as a back up last year.
Cicada 4 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Anyone know if it is a two way deal? must be... but even if it's a one way deal, he can still be sent down..just at full cap (i think)
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Now we just need to sit back and see what happens with a Forward....
LIDDYGIBBY5 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 must be... but even if it's a one way deal, he can still be sent down..just at full cap (i think) Wouldn't he have to clear waivers?

Feldmarschall 9 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 It's a one-way deal. No sensible goalkeep with his numbers would EVER agree to a two-way deal. He stays on our roster 100%, sending him down would necessitate him clearing the waiver wire, and there's no way he wouldn't get poached.
Superman54 91 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 What? Did you see Conklin play last year? This is a steal for $750,000. Kolzig has been my favorite goalie forever. To see this guy in a winged wheel would bring tears of joy into my eyes.
glasgowcelticwing 18 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 great deal , solid back up for Ozzie at a decent price.
Probert 5 For Fighting 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 He single-handedly carried the Pens in the middle of the season for a little bit. For 750k, he's just fine as a 2/3 goalie.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 We keep opposition shots to a minimum and Conklin had games were he was making 40-50 saves, he will be a solid backup.
Team_All-Star 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 (edited) I have always liked Conklin. He's a real solid goaltender and as the majority has already pointed out...he is an absolute steal for $750,000. I would also like to pose a question to everyone. Who else thinks that at best Howard will never be more than a very adequate back-up? Especially after wathcing some footage, I forsee McCollum as our future #1 guy in net after Ozzie is gone. Edited July 1, 2008 by Team_All-Star
datsFan40 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 This is exactly what holland said he was going to do. 2/3 so far. 1.) Resign Stuart or fine some what close of a replacement - CHECK 2.) Sign veteran goalie for cheap, to compete with Howard for Backup. - CHECK (howard will be the backup, but just in case, it's good to have Conklin) 3.) Sign vet forward for short term deal - ? So far so good, one more piece of the puzzle left.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 GRRRRRRRRRRRRR WHY!!!! PUT HOWARD IN ALREADY DAMN IT!! Mgmt said they were going to go after an experience middle/lower-tier goalie from the get go. Conklin is signed essentially for pennies, has played respectable in chunks with both Edmonton and Pittsburgh, and it is good depth move with Hasek retiring, and correct me if I am wrong Howard can play one more year in the minors without worrying about waivers. I'd like see Howard get some more time as well but there's nothing wrong with some healthy competition, and in terms of giving money for a backup goalie position, this is like a steal. I see no logical reason whatsoever to be upset with this signing.
Reilly 24 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 (edited) So, assuming Conklin gets the back-up spot, does Detroit even go over $2 million TOTAL for their goaltending? Edited July 1, 2008 by Reilly
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Conklin is pretty good, and isn't he fairly young? He did a great job with Pittsburgh and I read many complimentary articles about him over the past season. Good backup, cheap, I approve.
