Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Good god, I hope this is false. The Williams of 05-06 would be a welcome addition, but the post-Raffi Torres Williams is a joke. This. For today's Williams we know the following: --> Scored 19 goals on mediocre teams last year. --> Put up 7 PPG, 7 PPA and 4 GWG. --> Managed to finish with 47 pts in 80 games (and thus he's a far cry from being a full replacement for Hudler) --> Right hand shot that can play the point on the PP --> Lacks size and grit --> Disappears in the playoffs (only 1 career goal, only managed one point (assist) in 4 postseason games this year) --> If brought in will likely play the 2nd PP point, thus stealing minutes from Ericsson (who we should invest the time in) --> Doesn't appear to want to be a Red Wing based on his recent radio interview --> Doesn't provide PK or defensive savvy --> Might be expensive for what he actually provides For me, the negatives definitely out-weigh the positives with Jason Williams. Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Why would a team that didn't play with much effort in games 6 and 7 of the SCF Finals go after a guy that is known for being soft and not playing with much effort? Williams is a guy that's always been shy about contact. Apparently, that's what we need right now. The team we saw in games 6 and 7 was very much the result of the circumstances-- tired, worn down, injured and not quite as hungry as their opponent. Games 6 and 7 were the inevitable results of the Wings playing the first 3 games in 4 days, especially given that they had a week less recovery time than the other team after the conference (read: 3 days). Add on the injuries and it's hard for the Wings to carry the necessary energy through a 7 game series that was rushed through and scheduled at the convenience of NBC. All that being said, they definitely lost on their own-- there's no excuse for Hossa disappearing, Rafalski getting beaten by everyone and their uncle and the entire team suddenly forgetting how to score. After game 2 we had them by the throat and they ended up winning. There's no excuse for losing a series after you were up 2-0.
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 (edited) July 30, Columbus Dispatch: It doesn't appear that a deal is imminent, and by that I mean in the next 24-48 hours. The Red Wings and Williams have been talking for two weeks now, and an offer is on the table. But the Wings may have to make a move to clear salary cap space before Williams is able to officially sign. "They're really the only NHL club that has shown any interest," Williams said. The part of that little excerpt from that article that scared me is that the Red Wings WOULD HAVE TO CLEAR MORE CAP ROOM TO SIGN HIM. Huh? How much are they offering this guy? I mean, clear cap room for Phil Kessel or someone like that, but JASON WILLIAMS? Does he come with gum? Edited July 31, 2009 by AtomicPunk
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Aren't you EVA's co-pilot on the Hudler fan wagon? Hahaha. Yeah, I've always really liked Hudler. Almost spent $50 on a 1 of 10 Hudler hockey card this year (I'm lucky my girlfriend gave me the stink eye on that one). If we're going to take a chance on a player I'd take it on Prospal before Williams.

gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Not to mention the fact that we can sign him now so long as we clear the cap space before the regular season. But please, please, please let this not pan out. I tend to like Red Wings even if they're not that great. I'm a Red Wings fan. I never liked Jason Williams. I heard they put an ad out for fake Abercrombie and Fitch ****** bags who only have to work 3 days a week, perfect for someone who is rather challenged in the consistency department. egroen 384 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Williams is looking more and more likely. From John Glennons blog at tennessean.com: A few interesting comments from player agent Wade Arnott (Jason’s brother) earlier this afternoon. In regards to one of his clients, forward Jason Williams, Arnott said it’s looking increasingly likely Williams will sign with Detroit. ``It’s a very viable option,’’ Arnott said. ``He’s sleeping on things … But a lot of the (Detroit) coaching staff is the same from when he was there and a lot of the players are the same, so there’s a lot of familiarity there.’’ I agree that if he was offered the rumored $2.5m he would have signed by now. Hopefully the offer is much lower than that... though I can't believe Detroit is the only NHL team to show any interest -- he's not *that* bad.

No he's not, but the fact he's worse offensively then Hudler, Hossa, and Sammy, all the while being much softer then those three as well, it just isnt a good option, unless it's for 500k-900k. I'd take a potential 20 goal scorer for less then a million, but this is just like a bad dejavu. Everyone was so happy to see him leave, just like they were with Kopecky and Sammy this offseason, and now Willys coming back? It's like Holland wants one scapegoat per team (Because we all know once the contract is signed, who will be the most hated player on the roster.) The question I have is, is Williams it? If theres still a Peca/Grier to be added, then it isnt so terrible. Edited July 31, 2009 by Detroit # 1 Fan
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 The Red Wings have access to $3.2m+ pretty easily. Abdelkader to GR; Lebda traded... Also a decent chance Lilja is on LTIR I have to think Holland will go after two players, and a grinder after he finds his offensive player.

Mors 201 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 (edited) I'd take Sammy any day over Williams - that pretty much says it all. Exactly, it's rare for me to say I'd take Sammy over anyone, but I have to agree. At least it was amusing to watch Samuelsson run his mouth after the ref was protecting him...Williams will just skate away with his tail between his legs. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Williams? Jason Williams? Please God no. What we need is a difference maker. Someone, even a 4th liner, who brings something to the table that could push this team. Williams is a completely neutral, ineffective, pointless addition. He doesn't motivate us. He doesn't provide any level of skill we don't have. And he'll probably be way too expensive for what he's worth. Again, please God no.

At least it was amusing to watch Samuelsson run his mouth after the ref was protecting him...Williams will just skate away with his tail between his legs. Hmm. I wonder what Micah's thoughts on this are. Sammy was also, by Babs' view, the biggest forward on the team. Or at least looked like it. In that sense I supposed it was easier to at least put up a front. Among the guys who are 5-11 or below JWilly doesn't really have anything substantial to make him stand out. Not the skill of Pav and Z nor the speed of Drapes, Helm, even Lebda. He shoots right handed. That counts. Not really.

Yeah 2.5 M from from a team that went to the SC final back to back years, not to mention the only team to make him an offer? Didnt someone say he made 2.2 last year? I dont think he would be taking this long to accept that kind of offer, it has to be much lower..

If theres still a Peca/Grier to be added, then it isnt so terrible. Possibly no. I think Holland was planning on Hudler staying, and would make later bring in someone like Grier or Betts during camp on a one-year or tryout deal. But now that Huds split, and he has a small amount of space to work with, his options open up a bit more. He can get someone like Williams/Sykora/Prospal and still have room to make a play at a grinding forward if he trades Meech or Lebda, or Lilja goes on LTIR. (I doubt Holland will make a trade if the latter is the case).

That's what I'm talking about. Unfortunately, you're going to get flamed by all of the odd Hudler lovers on this forum. That midget did have a lot of backing here despite being a 3rd line player who disappeared the second half of the playoffs.

We need to rid of that ***** Franzen too. Oh and Lidstrom. I think they were absent for at least a game or two during the playoffs, or at some point in their career. Guys like Boogaard or Neil would sure show them how to score. Edited August 1, 2009 by Shoreline
