RedFX 48 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) http://www.nhl.com/i...vid=DL|NHL|home NEW YORK -- Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended for 25 games for launching himself to deliver a late hit to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa during Game 3 of the teams' Western Conference Quarterfinal playoff series in Chicago on Tuesday, April 17, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.Should the 25 games not be served by the conclusion of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the remaining games of the suspension will carry over into the following regular season. Torres will be prohibited from playing in any preseason games until he has served this 25-game suspension (playoff and regular-season games). Should the suspension carry over to next season, because he is classified as a repeat offender under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Torres will forfeit $21,341.46 in salary for every regular-season game in which he is ineligible to play. The incident occurred at 11:42 of the first period. Hossa suffered an injury as a result of the hit. Torres already has served one game of this suspension, Game 4 of the series in Chicago on Thursday, April 19. Thoughts? GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Wow! That means if he did it to Crosby, he'd get jail time. 3 Matt, sputman and Nev reacted to this

GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I don't remember what his last suspension was games wise, but this sounds about right for this idiot. He needs to be weeded out of the game or neutered, much like Matt Cooke was. We didn't hear much about Cooke this season did we? 1 Greatness=PavelDatsyuk reacted to this

Nyquistfan14 489 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I think it's a suspension, but my god 25? I've seen worse this playoffs. Yes players didn't get hurt but that doesn't mean the guy shouldn't be suspended cause the guy didn't get injured. Sick joke NHL! Sick joke shanahan your a bum!! 2 Hockeymom1960 and LeftWinger reacted to this
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Has any hockey player in recent history gotten that prolonged a suspension before? I honestly can't remember. Frankly though, he deserves it. That was beyond the pall, even compared to some of the insanity we've seen already.

He needs to be weeded out of the game or neutered, much like Matt Cooke was. We didn't hear much about Cooke this season did we? Torres really is a suspension waiting to be handed out, isn't he. If he'd learn how to hit legally... As much as I displike Cooke, he did somewhat reivent himself this year and possibly prolong his career. You can't argue with the fact that he had as many goals as Pavel, and only three less than Zetterberg. He has the numbers we needed from Cleary, Helm, and Abdelkader. LeftWinger 5,129 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Consider this....what was Bertuzzi's TOTAL games missed after "The Incident?" Now, compare that to this hit....WAY WAY too harsh...I think Bertuzzi missed about 20 games total....
Resetti 44 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 When I first saw the 25-game suspension, I thought it might be a bit heavy-handed, but after watching the explanation video that showed how many times Torres has done this exact same thing over his career, I think it was definitely warranted. 7 Lonewuhf, OldMan333, IllinoisRedWingsFan and 4 others reacted to this
Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 The last suspension of similar length that I can remember is when Chris Simon two-handed another player in the face back when he played for the Islanders. I don't think this hit is on par with that kind of action, but definitely deserved a lengthy suspension due to Torres' history. 25 games though? Eh... Yep: The Rest Of The Season (minimum 25 games) Chris Simon of the New York Islanders, for a slash to the face of the Rangers' Ryan Hollweg in March, 2007. Simon misses 15 regular season games plus all of the Islanders' playoff games. The suspension carries over to 2007-08 if necessary to meet the 25-game minimum. AND THEN AGAIN THE FOLLOWING SEASON: 30 Games Chris Simon of the New York Islanders, for stomping on the leg of Pittsburgh's Jarko Ruutu in December, 2007. It is the seventh suspension of Simon's NHL career.
Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 That must have included 5 games that were Webers? I have seen much worse in these playoffs so I would say a bit harsh. 10 would have been right and I hate Torres. Ashams was way worse I think. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I think Matt Cooke got about 20. Shanny was flexing his muscle, "See I can be tough!" ... But the day before, Bettman says to Shanny ... see I own Phoenix, I won't ***** and it makes you look good. We'll make Torres the poster child for bad hits. 1 Red Crazy reacted to this

Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Well deserved, but also an easy target to throw the book at and say, "See! We've got this thing under control!" Already a multiple-time offender, bottom line scrub, he had no chance (not that he especially deserves one). 2 Hockeymom1960 and Jedi reacted to this

Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 DOUBLE STANDARDS MUCH?!?!?! I have seen worse, and I would be okay with this hit being punished ONLY IF CONSISTENTLY!!! I swear, the Weber non-hockey thing was worse than this... but not by much. I really am sick of this ******* NHL BS.
Jimmy Jazz 3 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Very much a reactionary decision from Shanny. As has already been stated easy to throw the book at Torres. He's basically a plugger that won't really have an effect on a series (barring injury an opposing team's player) Suspending Shea Weber on the other hand.... Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Shanny has lost his ******* mind. There's making an example, and then there's making a joke out of yourself. Torres has done some stupid stuff, but that hit wasn't deserving of 25 games, no chance.
