Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Captaining his home country (possibly his only chance) was a big deal for him. He's given so much to us, IMO it's only fair he get that special opportunity. Now that he's back I don't want him playing till he's 100% though Agreed. The entitlement and sense of ownership over Datsyuk is getting a little ridiculous here... 5 ahkmed, dropkickshanahans, Wheelchairsuperhero and 2 others reacted to this

Yeah, he's one of two marquee players on this team... A true pillar of the Wings. The Olympics are held in his home country and he gets to be the captain. This opportunity won't happen again in his hockey career. Most of you would do the same in that context, so I don't understand all the whining. I actually thought he looked great during Olympics, he was easily the best player Russia had. And with the way he looked during the Olympics I'm just kinda surprised and a little confused why he thinks he's not healthy enough to play when the season restarts. P.S. I have absolutely no problem with him going to play for Russia, I'm actually happy he did.

I was thinking maybe he actually does want to play and thinks he's healthy enough but the team is recommending he doesn't until he's 100% (which given our playoff situation doesn't seem like a good idea). But like I said I dunno, could be totally wrong.
Guest L3T5G0W1NG5 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Z and D are pathetic for playing in the Olympics injured. They should focus on playing for the team that puts food on their table - THE DETROIT RED WINGS. I say we trade Z for whatever we can get because he's just going to get older/more fragile. Considering what he has done for this franchise and fanbase, you would think people would be a little more accommodating when he wants to chase a dream. The wings more than respect Datsyuk. They offered him a nice extension, allowed him to play in Russia, and gave him time off afterwards to be with his family. This wouldn't be done by the wings - or any organization - because a player dangles the "I can leave at any time." If any player did imply that I am sure the wings would let him walk because that is piss-poor attitude and a cheap bargaining ploy. I think Datsyuk probably should have been back right after elimination to receive treatment and assessment going forward (and brought his family along to visit because they are important too). That would have been the fair thing to do for him and the organization considering everything they have done for each other. Instead we are 1 game before the season starts up again and we don't know what his status is.

It's one thing if you're in tip top shape, but to be injured and on top of that still on the honeymoon of his massive contract extension to go play in the olympics just to come back and say "Yeah, I can't play" should not be kosher in anybody's books. At some point you gotta draw the line. If you're too sick to play for your NHL team, you're too sick to play for any team. Should be simple as that.

Again, he was the C for his team in his home country. I think that's a pleasantry we can afford him. If it was in Korea and/or Ovi was wearing the C I'd feel a little differently. We have a good rep with players bc of actions like this. 1 roboturner reacted to this

Yes, let's get rid of out two elite centers. Have you not watched a game this year ? Have to seen what our team looks like without these two in the lineup ? With next to no center depth it would be the worst decision for this franchise. 2 roboturner and evilmrt reacted to this

Asked if he feels much better than he did before the Olympics, he said, “Similar.” Asked if his status will be determined after the morning skate, he said, “I hope. I don’t know. Hard to say.” Asked if this injury will bother him the rest of the season, he said, “I hope so one day the pain is left. Now it’s still the same.” so he can play through this injury while playing for his country, but he can't play through it for the red wings? i'm sorry but i'm not giving him a pass for that. LeftWinger 5,129 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 (edited) Maybe he was "asked" to play through the injury for team Russia. A very special "request" from Putin... Anyhow, now that we know Z is out for the rest of the regular season, does that qualify him for LTIR and some much needed cap relief? Especially if Weiss returns soon? Considering what he has done for this franchise and fanbase, you would think people would be a little more accommodating when he wants to chase a dream. I didn't know he was an intern all this time. I thought he was being paid millions to put the Red Wings first and foremost on his list of priorities when it comes to hockey. Point is, the team has rewarded him for what he's done for it over the years. That's why he's a multi-millionaire, unlike any of us. But he's also under contract this season to perform for the team. There is no immunity because of the past as long as one is making big bucks in the present. If he's healthy and wants to play for his country, great. If he's hurt and is in danger of aggravating an existing injury to play in the Olympics, then it's not OK. If he's even more hurt to the point where he would only play for the Olympic team and not his NHL team in similar circumstances, then that is the worst scenario. I hope that's not what happened here. DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 I see both sides of the NHL Olympics debate, but it kind of pisses me off that he was OK to play for Russia but might not go for Detroit. I understand the honor and wanting to play for his country and everything, but part of his contract is to not do things that unnecessarily jeopardize his health. If he was hurting that bad he shouldn't have played.
Richdg 267 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 Buppy, now whop is cherry picking? have you ever read anything about Weiss's career? he is always hurt. basically every season he is hurt. Just in case you haven't followed, here are the highlights: 2002/02-His first full season. Plays 77 games-has a broken toe 2003/04-plauys 50 games-broken leg and sprained knee 2004/05-lockout 2005/06-plays 41 games-major wrist injury 2006/07-plays in 74 games-knee and shoulder injuries 2007/08-plays in 74 games-shoulder injuries again 2008/09-plays 78 games-groin injury-best season to date 2009/10-plays 80 games and is largely healthy all year 2010/11-plays 76 games-only minor injuries but numbers drop-49 points 2011/12-playus 80 games-no major injuries 2012/13-plays 17 games-major wrist injury 2013/14-played 26 games-hernia surgey, missed 32 games so far Now I ask you, who is Weiss? is it more likely he is the guy that gets hurt in 6 of his 11 seasons or the guy that remains healthy for 5 of the 11 seasons? He is also 31 soon-in April. We signed a guy to a long term deal for good money that 1. can't stay healthy overall and 2. His best days are already behind him. That means 1 thing: Bad deal.
