DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Who cares where a person was born? They sign the best available players. It could be none of the local boys were as good. For me and some very good friends (both male + female) this is very important, because it helps building that "us" feeling with a club. Just look at how much people are already liking Dekeyser and it will only get better as he improves. I didn't want to mention the Habs because for them it's not "doing the right thing" driven its politically driven and thats hugely different to just wanting some local heroes on your team. Anyway I guess the michigan boys on this forum will know better how important that is for them :-) As for non of the local boys being as good well how do you/we know if they aren't getting a chance? I'd rather win with nobody from Michigan on the team than lose with a half dozen local boys. This isn't juniors or college. 6 wings4thecup06, Andy Pred 48, number9 and 3 others reacted to this
number9 3,297 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Nothing against him and my local team has done something similar and I hated it. Why not give the job to good ol Michigan boy ? I think the Wings are running the risk of becoming a very european dominated organisation, where are - save for Dekeyser - are the upcoming local heroes? In my book If you live and work in Detroit, you're a Detroiter.

Who says they aren't getting a chance? You think Wings scouts travel the entire world scouring for future talent, but don't bother to check around the metro area? I know it's cool to have a local guy on the team, but you don't go out of your way to sign someone of lesser talent just because they're local. I know it's important for "Michigan boys" to feel like they're specially chosen, but maybe that's the problem. If their only shot is getting picked because they're local, they might not be good enough. 2 number9 and Dabura reacted to this
Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Yeah I was kinda Colin Campbell Jared Coreau about this kid, but now I feel more Danny DeKeyser about him, even if he starts in GR I'm thinking this kid, if he's as good as advertised, might be the real reason why Kenny was willing to part with Jarnkrok. Sounds like he gives us a reasonably high-end natural center in the pipeline and he sort of recoups the lost second-rounder. Also makes me wonder if David Pastrnak - who I love - might be our first-round target in the draft. 1 number9 reacted to this
Datsyukian-Deke 722 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 If our European scouts see something in this kid I'm going to trust them. They have had enough success to warrant my respect. You can never have too many throws at the bull's eye. Good signing!

derblaueClaus 1,668 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 It's a free chance to get another rooster player maybe even more in a couple of years so there is nothing wrong with this signing. Well done Red Wings. As for the homegrown thing : It's what annoys me most about European soccer fans. That kind of thing what I call " local nationalism", that can be felt underneath the surface of most soccer games and ultimately leads to the infamous riots during and after the game. Why does it matter from where someone is from as long as he plays for the team you're cheering for ?
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 I wouldn't mind his cap hit if the term is right. $7M x 3 years would be tempting, and I actually don't think it's all that unrealistic. Didn't his agent say he was looking for $50 mil over 7 years? Unless he was just saying that to get off the Island, there's no way he'd drop his demands from that to a 3 year deal. Fans who don't care about identification and local heroes, same goes for nationalism there is nothing wrong with wanting to be proud of your club by expecting less foreigners and more homegrown boys, especially in soccer where everyone knows there are around 8 clubs worldwide who will get the best of the best.. People who only want to see points, points and success at all costs are the typical gloryhunters and event fans who have helped turning European soccer into what it is today, a business first industry, suit driven industry instead of a sport. In short not even worth watching, following anymore As for VM; I fully expect our scouts - who are one of the best in the business - to also look at Michigan boys but there really is a pattern with the Wings and all I expect is a different mixture of players. I know this worked great when others where behind the curve but nowadays almost every team has scouts worldwide so finding gems is a lot tougher. Maybe the kid will be good maybe not but personally I would have prefered another Dekeyser story just at the center position this time. like you said I think it would be important for Michigan boys to have that special feeling come draft time. I mean every kid dreams of playing for their local club once they are on the cusp of becoming pros. "local boys" per season... 96-97: Aaron Ward (Windsor) 97-98: Aaron Ward (Windsor) 01-02: None 07-08: Brian Rafalski (Dearborn) 12-13: Justin Abdelkader (Muskegon), Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids), David Legwand (Detroit), Drew Miller (East Lansing), Danny DeKeyser (Detroit) Good thing those good ol' local boys were around this past season to spur the Wings on to a Cup win, right? Right? Personally, I would rather have the front office concern themselves with building the best 23 man roster they can regardless of where the players come from. 2 DatsyukianDekes and number9 reacted to this
paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 If there was a "local boy" available right now who was a 21-year-old free agent and as good as Nosek apparently is, then the Wings could be criticized. Clearly, however, there isn't any such player available. 1 TheXym reacted to this
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 North American hockey is pretty thoroughly scouted. Even though there are a good collection of scouts on every team looking worldwide, homegrown gems are much more difficult to go unnoticed than someone overseas. Like Paulwoodsfan said, there's no local talent that hasn't been unearthed yet.

Tomas Nosek. Excuse me? Who? Vanek? Shoot! Darn! Darn! Darn! Sorry Sir... Mr. I: You f***ing idiot...(click) I haven't been this excited about a signing since we got Hossa. Doesn't measure up to "Derian Hatcher acquisition" excitement, though. Edited June 15, 2014 by GMRwings1983
DatsyukianDekes 2,428 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Are we seriously stating we should draft more from Michigan? Why? Obviously the high end talent just isn't there. Average "Local Boys" aren't going to win cups, the best players put together will. I couldn't even imagine a team full of Abdelkaders playing for the Wings. What a disaster. In short not even worth watching, following anymore Oh, that doesn't mean I don't care about identification and/or local heroes. In fact quite the opposite is true. If look up the standings of my favorite soccer club Werder Bremen (I come from the area around Bremen) you can tell I don't cheer for them because I only care for points or success. However, there is a certain distinction between identification and a refusal of a player because of his origin. Frankly I would call the latter simply racism. OT: Really Werder Bremen? Ever since they took the championship away from Bayern Munich I've liked them back in the days. For me it is always about the mixture I want to see local boys, some national veterans and foreigners - but not more than a handful - who can help the club win and teach the young players on what it takes to become succesful at "the next stage". North American hockey is pretty thoroughly scouted. Like Paulwoodsfan said, there's no local talent that hasn't been unearthed yet. Ya I guess a team like the Wings has a lot of scouts everywhere and if there is no local talent available it is sad but can't change that. The question now is, what did Fisher - who I really love as a scout - see in this kid? Don't know if his old club was good or just average but if the guy can translate his game into the NA style he could be a nice stopgap for the Rapids, till the younger kids are ready. Like I said nothing against him :-) Edited June 15, 2014 by frankgrimes 1 derblaueClaus reacted to this

anthonyn66 89 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 I don't get why people were calling Brunner a bust. Signs on a contract that's cheap as s*** and produces very, very respectable numbers without any kind of NHL/AHL development beforehand. He doesn't sign with us after because he wanted more money and it didn't work out for him, but the bottom line is we got him for a year on an ELC and he helped our team immensely. Not a waste at all. 3 hooon, Number19 and BottleOfSmoke reacted to this

BadgerBob 297 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Minnesota is real big on keeping their "good ol Minnesota kids" in the state. It's insanely obnoxious. They sacrifice getting high end talent elsewhere, especially in college hockey, and it hasn't paid off at either level. I don't care where the guy is from, if he's better than anything else available I'd want him on my team.
Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Looking forward to the addition of center depth in Grand Rapids. Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted June 17, 2014 I really don't see the issue with adding some younger guys who will (Nosek, possibly Sekac), for better or worse, reveal if they're going to work out sooner rather than later. The Wings are letting several UFA's go, and I'm guessing that along Emmerton going to the KHL, Parkes and Coetzee probably won't be qualified. Nothing wrong with stocking the shelves with some players who aren't 17-18. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
