amato 3,210 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 that was crazy. glad to hear he seems to be doing alright, all things considered. from that article: @SDGullsAHL INJURY UPDATE: Brian McGrattan is conscious, alert and has full movement. 9:44 PM - 19 Jan 2016
e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 Kudos Smite. I thought all the McGrattan threads had been shuttered... I really wanted to start a new thread titled "God Emperor Brian McGrattan Gets Knocked the EFF Out" but thought otherwise. To go beyond this scary incident: There have some gnarly deeds in the world of hockey over the last week or so... Linesman punching kid. Trainer comes out and spears linesman. Gudbranson fights Hendricks to avenge Ekblad hit. Arizona and the Blues (?) fight after the final buzzer. I know we've discussed fighting and the NHL ad naseum around these parts, but instead of discussing it in the Ericsson thread... how about here? 1 Smite reacted to this
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) This is what happens when you've had only a few fights in the last few years. Reminded me of the Kypreos KO where the head hits the ice for a double knockout. But even Probert was KO'd before (although Probie was so coked up that he came back later to fight Ewen in the same game). In fact, Maggio was KO'd himself earlier in the season. It's a strange job these guys have. Edited January 20, 2016 by GMRwings1983

frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 Maggio landed an absolute right bomb but the thing that knocked him out for good was the same thing that happened to Parros - face first onto the ice But for sure Maggio won that fight dude would look good in red and white
PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) There's a bleacherreport article on this that says he's had 245 fights since junior. Tough way to make a living. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2609368-the-horrific-side-of-hockey-fights-on-display-yet-again-in-brutal-ahl-brawl?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial Hearing the crowd continue to cheer like that when the guy is out in such an alarming way is pretty gross. Seems like this could have been pretty bad with the way his head hits the ice. Edited January 20, 2016 by PavelValerievichDatsyuk
frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) article started well but went down the same anti fighting route like most others. Things like the Parros, McGrattan incidents are thankfully not the norm and the exception. You can bet there will be a rematch and Maggio better be ready for it What's funny to me how much idiots are thinking anybody cares about their the NHL, NFL are too violent stance they aren't violate both sports are for real men. But man 245 fights is insane Edited January 20, 2016 by frankgrimes

I'm one of the pro-fighting fans (long as it's not an assault and a fair joust) but when crowd is too stupid to realize wtf just happened. That annoys the hell out of me. That was a face-on ice collision. They just kept cheering and cheering. Classless. Ram 240 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) This has some relevance in the Ericsson thread but I thought I'd leave it here. Abby had some comments on fighting and I think he is spot on. The game has evolved and while I am just as much an old school hockey guy as the next and don't think it will ever fully be eliminated, there really just isn't as much a need for it as there was in traditional times. His comments also lend to the DRW way...not in the last decade has the team been your powerhouse of fighters/grinders/etc, and I think as a team they usually finish near the bottom for fighting majors of the season. It is a point of evolution of the game and DRW as an organization not surrounding itself with fighters (talking about Ericsson now). -- “I think there could be a place for fighting as far as just policing the guys,” Abdelkader said. “It’s the after the whistle stuff, the different things that can go on." “At the same time, no one really needs to fight anymore. I just think you’re seeing less and less of it. Players are more skilled and focused on playing (well) on the ice than going out and fighting. You’re not seeing a fourth line that’s full of guys that are going to go out and fight.” http://windsorstar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/detroit-red-wings/wings-abdelkader-thinks-fighting-on-way-out Edited January 20, 2016 by Ram
kipwinger 8,527 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 He's convinced that this move away from enforcers is temporary, so he's probably already suffering from the effects of CTE. Lol. But on a serious note, what else is he going to say? He's pretty well locked into this career, I doubt he's ready to retire. I'm sure he thinks the risk is worth the reward if he thinks he will be back in the NHL one day.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 Boxing, MMA, and even the much beloved NFL have alot more issues regarding head injuries than what hockey could ever hope to have, and physical contact via body checks has resulted in more head trauma in recent years than fighting. ok? Sorry, I'm not really sure what the point of this comment is. Are you suggesting because other sports have an even worse record of traumatic brain injuries that it makes it okay to continue to endorse fighting in the NHL?
