Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) The NHL Rookie of the Year according to LGW Because we're less biased than the NHL Here are some of the candidates: Artemi Panarin Like the on-ice version of the date-rape drug, Panarin has quickly made a name for himself helping Kane score. He currently leads NHL rookies in GOALS, ASSISTS, and POINTS. And while he's only one goal ahead of Larkin for the rookie lead, he's about a mile ahead of the competition in assists and also points. He's also leading the league in power play points. In short, the guy puts up numbers. Including age numbers! At 50 years old, he just barely made the rookie cut-off. Harry Potter Dylan Larkin At 19 years old, Larkin somehow convinced Holland that dropped balls weren't necessary to play in the NHL and hasn't looked back. He's been consistently among the top rookie goal scorers in the league, and locked up the rookie +/- back in November. In a season where the Wings' production has been down across the board, Larkin has also made a strong case for team MVP now that Drew Miller's season is effectively over. Max Domi NORTH AMERICAN SKATER Sufferer of perpetual forehead acne and being the son of "that one guy" as they say in Phoenix Las Vegas Portland Arizona, Max Domi has been a large reason why the Coyotes are still in the playoff hunt despite featuring on ice talent such as Shane Doan, Kyle Chupacabra, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Hanzal, and literally nobody else you've ever heard of before. He's also consistently in the running for "runner up behind Panarin" for ROY. Probably would win bro of the year award based on some of his pics. Jack Eichel Everyone's favorite rookie ginger got off to a slow start compared to those rookies who weren't supposed to win the Calder this year (see: anyone not named McDavid or Eichel) but has been as hot as that hair more recently. In fact, he and Larkin were tied for points going into the Wings/Buffalo game. However as the final buzzer went off, Larkin skated away up two more points, while Eichel skated away up one tooth. As far as draft consolation prizes go, Eichel has been solid, and more importantly, not injured. Colton Parayko At 6'6", 226lbs, this hulking defensman has made his presence known. However, in the year of the rookie, Parayko has gone largely unnoticed. He's second in +/-, leads all defensman in points, and is logging some solid minutes for the St. Louis Blues. But because defense isn't really a thing with NHL awards, he'll probably be left off the ballot. OTHER NOTABLES:Conner McDavid! Shayne Goatheistberry or something Anthony Duclair Landon Ferraro Who will win this year??? kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 I'm going to guess and say the NHL will give it to CONNOR MCDAVID! As high as you can get on a player even while he's injured. or Dylan Larkin Cuz I'm not biased 2 jimmyemeryhunter and Gordie Howe hat trick reacted to this
jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) I'm gonna say as long as evrryone stays on their current pace, it's gonna go to panarin simply because I don't think the voters will put much stock into the fact that Larkin is doing it without patty "waste of a human" Kanes amazing production, and the fact that he is 24 and played professionally already. So 1st:panarin 2nd:Larkin 3rd: Domi I also realllllllllyyyyyy wish we had parayko. Edit:I just read through your whole post, and kudos. matt198913 932 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 Larkin. 19 years old and best player. Panarin is good. Really good, he's been in pro hockey for some time and I feel that has impact on his rookie status. 1 DRW Dominance reacted to this

So 1st:panarin 2nd:Larkin 3rd: Domi I also realllllllllyyyyyy wish we had parayko. At the beginning of the year one of the threads asked who Larkin might be traded for, and I had suggested Parayko as a possibility to consider. My mindset was both of these guys could become franchise players for their respective positions, and I figured the Wings had more higher-end talent up front in the prospect pool than on defense, so it might be a trade that would make sense down the road. As far as defensman, he has everything you could want: solid defensively, huge size, booming shot, goal scoring ability, etc etc. In retrospect I'm glad we have Larkin over him, though, because I was not expecting our offense to be as anemic as it currently is, and Mrazek seems to make up for any lack of a franchise defensman (at least in terms of goals against) at the moment. Still, if we could somehow swipe Parayko from the Blues I would be willing to move a lot of pieces to make it happen. 2 jimmyemeryhunter and NerveDamage reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 If they want to go based off numbers obv Panarin but if they want to go off of difference maker/ impact etc. It is definitely Larkin. Larkin is the MVP of the Red Wings. Panarin is not a Hawk MVP. 5 krsmith17, DRW Dominance, jimmyemeryhunter and 2 others reacted to this

Larkin is the MVP of the Red Wings. Panarin is not a Hawk MVP. If Larkin can close the scoring gap a bit, and maybe take over goals he could have a solid chance at it, because all the intangibles are in his favor. Way younger, no professional experience, carrying his respective team, producing regardless of where he's put on the lineup (goal tonight was assisted by Glendending btw), almost all his points are even strength (pro or con?). I don't see the league voting him over Panarin though when he's 13 points behind. 2 NerveDamage and jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

NerveDamage 4,176 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) Awesome thread! love the humor haha. we all know "that one guy" right? Really wish Larkin passes Panarin and gets the ROY award. He's been better than great. This young blood boost infused over the past few years has shaped a new Red Wings era, and I see Larkin fitting right in the "C"enter of it. As you guys put it, Parayko sounds like a really good prospect and would be a much needed piece on the D with that colossal size of his. We have a Franchise Goalie in Petr, a League Phenom in Larkin. All we need is a D-man, yet Marchenko and Smith are making strong cases for themselves...in a lesser degree My closing argument for ROY would be: "Panarin's been carried by Kane. Larkin's carrying the Red Wings". Edited January 23, 2016 by NerveDamage 5 puckloo39, 55fan, krsmith17 and 2 others reacted to this

DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 Panarin is leading all rookies in scoring by a long way. If you don't counthis KHL experience against him, I think he wins it going away. Domi and Eichel are both playing center, which is a harder position, and have about the same point total as Larkin, which gives them an edge. Unless Larkin really heats up scoring wise and pulls away, I think one of them wins it. 1 Gordie Howe hat trick reacted to this

Unless Larkin really heats up scoring wise and pulls away, I think one of them wins it.If Larkin doesn't hit the scoring wall, no way eichel or domi win it over him, center or not. This will probably just go to the highest scoring rookie, the only reason why people don't view panarin as the obvious choice is because no one knows whether or not the people that decide winners will take into account age, his khl experience, and that he's playing with kane.Domi has a chance, and eichel hasn't been as dominant as they expected so I think that might be held against him too. kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) I dont think Eichel or Domi would win it over Larkin because they're playing center. There is no indication that they judge that way. Larkin played on every line. PP and kills penalties at times. He's centered a couple games too. He plays what his coach wants him to Edited January 23, 2016 by kickazz 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 The problem with discounting Panarin because he's playing with Kane is that this argument can be extrapolated to include Larkin when compared to Domi. Larkin has been playing alongside Zetterberg and Datsyuk, who, while not as productive as Kane has been, are still better than what Domi has had to work with. LeftWinger 4,973 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 I don't think its bias picking Larkin, he is tied for the goal scoring lead, leads in +/- and really isn't that far behind in points. If Larkin had a player like Kane to pass the puck to, then it would look different in the points department. It's going to be close, but I am used to Detroit being screwed by the NHL when it comes to ROY....Yzerman, Fedorov and Zetterberg come to mind...so it'll be Kane. Oh, I mean Panera Bread. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) As much as I rag on the all-star game the fact that Larkin was picked for it is also an eye opener. It somewhat indicates that he is the teams best player. If Eichel was his teams best player - he would have gotten picked. I think Larkin being such an impact player for his own team helps his case a lot. I think it will come down to Panarin or Larkin. I seriously don't see Domi or Eichel winning it unless they really tear it up to finish the season. Personally I'd rather he get second place cause the ROY winner is like a curse more often than not. TheXym 2,606 Report post Posted January 24, 2016 The heart wants Larkin to win the Calder, but it has been a curse. (Jackman over Zetterberg being the most egregious example I can think of off the top of my head). If he is runner up and ends up like the Wings, other notable runners up, I'm good with that. I do think Panarin's KHL experience should be considered. However, unless the sizeable scoring lead is significantly narrowed, it will be too much to ignore. Let him get the Calder and overpay him to cramp Chicago's cap. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 24, 2016 (edited) Eichel and Domi don't play in Detroit Right. They play on teams that happen to have better players and difference makers than they themselves are (O'Rielly for instance). Hence other players got picked for the all star game rather than them (in Buffalo's case Eichel). And removing John Scott from the equation OEL would have gotten picked over Domi, so that point won't work either in case you try it. Which goes to my original point that Dylan Larkin is Detroit's MVP, got picked for the all star game, and is one of the leading candidates for the Calder. The other leading candidate being Panarin who happens to lead in an important stats. Points. This isn't a discussion of who wanted to go to an all star or who didn't. The point is out of those 4 rookies, one happens to be the best player on his team while the others are not. Hence the results of the all star selections. The NHL tends to pick the best players from each team. So if they, the NHL, think Larkin is the best then I see some supporting evidence as to why Larkin has a pretty good shot at Calder. Additionally since the Calder is voted on by the PHWA and since Larkin has trended a crap ton on the media for majority of the year, that's another reason why I think Larkin has a good chance.
