Tyler Bertuzzi recalled... Vanek to LTIR

Good to see someone brought up. Would have liked to see Mantha, but I expected Bert was going to be the first call up regardless of how Mantha is doing in the AHL at the moment because of the camp he had. He narrowly missed making the big team, while Mantha apparantly did not impress. It's not that "slap in the face" to Mantha. Bert earned this call up and should get it before him. Mantha will be along eventually, considering how this team looks.

I disagree that Bertuzzi "earned" the call up ahead of Mantha. Also where did you hear that management weren't impressed with Mantha in camp? Mantha scored 3 goals in 5 pre-season games, while Bertuzzi scored a goal and 3 assists in 5 games. Mantha has 8 points (7 goals, 1 assist) in 9 games so far with the Griffins, while Bertuzzi has 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 9 games. I like the call-up, but I don't totally agree with it...

Mantha has already scored goals at the NHL level, and has proven that he can play top 6 in the NHL. Although, I think Bert can as well, he hasn't proven that he can score, let alone play top 6 at the NHL level...

Well I guess he's going to get his chance to play and I'm excited for him.

Bertuzzi and Mantha were both drafted in 2013, but Bert's a year younger. Does that mean he has an extra year of waiver eligibility or does he have to be on the team next year as well?

Regardless, Bertuzzi looks pretty sure to be a Wing one day and should get his cup of coffee, as babcock would say. I think next time Mantha gets called it should be for good and I still think for him to continue ripping the AHL would be great for him and building him confidence for when he comes up.

Bert will be miles ahead of Mantha in three years. Tough, competitive, a gamer. I am at almost every Griffin game and it is apples and oranges. Mantha scores, but is not a two way player. Bert is going to grind, which the wings sorely miss right now.
Watch the game tomorrow and see if you agree.

That's nice but this team has enough guys that qualify as two way guys that can't score. This team needs a true offensive body. You don't have to be a two way player if you score enough. I don't dislike the Bert callup. I love the kids game and am glad he's up. He just doesn't have a top 6 game and that's what the team needs with Vanek out. Bert will never be miles ahead of Mantha as you say though. Bert can be a 30 pt guy where Mantha can be 30 goal guy.

Cant get more needle sharp and to the point..."Not good enough "

fair warning, after reading this article you are seriously going to question what the f*** this poor excuse for a coach is doing in the nhl.

Yup, another grinding player is exactly what this team needs... We obviously don't need goal scoring... Mantha is a goal scorer, but f*** that noise, we need to turn him into a two-way player... We don't have enough guys that play a 200 foot game...
I too watch a ton of Griffins games, and I'm a huge fan of Bertuzzi, but I highly doubt he'll be "miles ahead of Mantha in three years"...

We don't need a two way Mantha, we need a goal scorer Mantha. In fact we need more than one. Let Mantha's linemen be two-way players.

Blash said Mantha did not impress during camp. And scoring in the AHL is nothing like the NHL. Pulks proved that tenfold.

I agree that scoring is different between the two leagues. The thing is you never know if he can score at the NHL level until he actually gets a shot to.

LOL at some on here. Bert better than MANtha? LOL Please. Lil Bert is nothing more than another Helm/Ott/Glendening. That is it. He is a checker. Good at it yes, but a checker and nothing more. This 2 way crap don't work. We need wingers that can score, defensemen that can play defense, and C's that can do both. We have none of this. But hey we continue to get worse and Holland knows all.

By "some" you mean "one", 95% of the posts in this thread wish it was Mantha. I only noticed one person say otherwise. Rather then be upset that its not Mantha, at least look at the bright side, Holland is bringing up some youth and they are benching Miller. This is a step in the right direction.

Bertuzzi may very well end up as a checker, but I don't know if that's certain. He didn't put up numbers in his first year in GR, but neither did Tatar, AA, Sheahan. All were 30-35 points in their first year. I'm just going to leave this here for consideration:

Their Last year in CHL:

Bert: 68gp 43g, 55a, 98pts

AA:   66gp 49g, 46s, 95pts.

Not saying I don't like this call up, I do, but I agree with you on what this team needs. IMO today we need to make the hard decision in order to start to make the Wings great again! (Along with America :P )

Seriously, wouldn't normally say this in one of our threads, but it's so important today to get out and vote. Help save America. (Just a public service announcement, not meant for discussion)

I'm not sure if you missed my sarcasm there, but I 100% agree. I hate that some (including the people that matter; Holland, Blashill and co.) want to turn a player like Mantha into a two-way, 200 foot, defensive player... He's a smart hockey player, he's not going to completely abandon defense, but it definitely shouldn't be top priority for him. Put him on a line with a responsible center (Nielsen, Sheahan, Helm) and let the kid play his game, aka produce offense, score goals...

Ok, so Blashill did say he wasn't good enough. That's the issue though. 3 goals in 5 games isn't good enough for a goal scorer? Maybe because he expects him to back-check every shift like he's a Helm or Glendening...

So you take stock into NHL pre-season where most of the players are AHLers, but you don't take any stock into the AHL? I'm sick of hearing the Pulkkinen comparison. Pulkkinen and Mantha are not even close to being the same player. Pulkkinen is small and not a great skater, Mantha is huge and a very good skater. Mantha has an NHL body, and in my opinion has already proven that he is NHL ready.

Again, I'm extremely excited to see what Bertuzzi can do in his debut tonight, I just think Mantha should have been the callup under the current circumstances...

I don't think they want Mantha as a Holmstrom per say but more like Vanek. Good hands around the net, plays in the middle and finds holes to get his shot off

We all need to pray Bertuzzi has an amazing game. Will bode well going forward using our prospects more. This team desperately needs some high energy guys that can make an impact offensively

Almost makes you think they should've called him up to replace the guy they want him to be more like, eh?

Like I've said before, every kid has to be on point defensively every shift or they get benched while a vet, even one who is supposed to be a defensive wizard, can blow assignment after assignment and not see their ice time touched.  He tries to take every kid and make him something he's not, just like Babcock did before him.  Smith was an offensive defenseman coming up, Babcock took him and never let him sniff the PP but ran him out on the PK.  Dekeyerser was a defense first guy, put him on the first PP unit.  Helm is a checking line center, make him a scorer.  Jurco is a scorer, make him a checker.  It's stupid.

Absolutely true.....What's Blashill going to try and make Bert?

Btw, I said something similar lastyear when Larkin fell off. I said that early on he was free wheeling playing his game. As the season went on Blashill made him change his game to their style...hurt Larkin bigly! :ninja:

Agreed about the Larkin thing, though through the first few games this year it looks like he gave the team back a bit more creative freedom. Problem is, that's how last year started too, so we'll see if it sticks.
