Um...no? Zetterberg is the better player, and trading him before he starts to decline (and probably even after that) would put a black mark on this franchise in relation to loyalty that would take decades to recover from.

This. Plus Z is just a heart and soul Red Wing. He embodies everything about the Wings and he's one of those special players who etches themselves into the fabric of the team. He's never had a bad playoff year. He's one of those guys who would sacrifice anything to help the team win and the value of his leadership and value within the locker room is hard to overstate. Zetterberg is a cornerstone player who defines the team. However, when the Oilers traded Gretzky they proved that no one is untouchable.

Hank has intangibles that Getz can never have. Zetterberg shuts down other teams forwards like no one else in the game, (besides Datsyuk)and still finds a way to score during the playoffs, I don't give a rats ass who has more goals in the regular season, it's the playoffs where I judge the Wings. Let the Ducks chase regular season stats. On your second comment, Nick Lidstrom is still a top five defenseman in the league at 40, and top five of all time, to suggest that Getz is on his best day a top fifteen, maybe a top ten forward in this league to suggest that he is better than any one player on our entire roster is just plain stupid. Umm... no... Datsyuk and Zetterberg are better players than Getzlaf. Why would Anaheim's theoretical unwillingness to trade Getzlaf for any player on our roster establish him as better than all of them? And no, I wouldn't trade Zetterberg for Getzlaf. Zetterberg is a great player and the future captain of the team.

Why is it that Kovalchuk is so heavily speculated to go to the KHL? He turned down a 12 year, $102M contract from Atlanta, he's got a 10 year, $100M contract from the Islanders sitting on the table now, and the KHL offered him a 3 year contract worth $42M. He hasn't signed any of them! What part of that screams greedy Russian to anyone?

Getzlaf had a much better year than Hank and is a younger player with more potential. Hank is 30 years old and it's doubtful that he hasn't hit his peak already. Hank is better defensively, but Getzlaf is more physical and will only improve defensively. Zetterberg has a tendency now to disappear for stretches at a time. I know people here are biased, but Getzlaf was a better player last year than Zetterberg, and even though Hank has had great seasons in the past, we have to go by the most recent outing and also realize that Getzlaf hasn't hit his prime yet. With that said, I'd keep Hank, because I don't like Getzlaf and wouldn't want to see us trade our future captain away. But as far as who the better player is right now, I say it's Getzlaf, and I don't care if every dumb slappy here negs me for actually being objective.

This makes no sense at all. First you say that it is increadibly close but Z fits the team better, then you say 30 out of 30 GM's would chose Getzlaff. Ok in your opinion Getzlaff is better. Fine. You are entitled to your opinion but 100% of the GM's are not going to agree with you. Maybe some of them but ALL of them? Get over yourself already. 30 out of 30 GM's no more about hockey than you do.

I'm 100% positive that there are a crowd of people on these forums who would agree with my assertions on this matter.

The more I think about it, the better it sounds. Modano with a guy with Hudlers skill on his wing, and a healthy Dano with net front presence and ability in the corners and on the boards has all the makings of a fantastic 3rd line.

One day Steve Yzerman will be a Red Wing again. And I for one, can't wait for that day! Yzerman is God.

Zetterberg has done nothing to warrant that he needs a change of scenery and neither has Getzlaf. The intangibles are too hard to compare considering the only people who really know are in the locker room. Getzlaf is also a different player type of player then Zetterberg. Really it's almost comparing apples to oranges to me, both players have their strengths and weaknesses and while the past likely sides that Zetterberg is a better player, the future might be a different story on just production. So I'd most likely turn down the offer mainly because Zetterberg fits the Wings identity. And I'd guess that the Ducks would turn down the offer mainly because he fits the Ducks identity.

Yeah, I'd probably make that trade. It would be with a heavy heart, and I'd discuss it with Zetts, and Lids for that matter, as well as Mr Illitch, but I'd probably make it.

Getzlaf is one of the 10 or 15 best forwards in the league. And he's always been great in the playoffs. He owned us in the playoffs two years ago if you haven't forgotten already. And he's won as many Cups as Zetterberg has. It's O.K. to like Zetterberg, but your post made it sound like Getzlaf is slightly better than Dan Cleary. That's the kind of homer bias that's getting annoying around here.

Modano really started to slide the past few years. And sometimes I think we overestimate the ability of playing with the Wings to cure your career problems. But Modano might be one of those players who really comes around. He's not playing for a declining franchise, he's never been sold out by the Wings and he can escape whatever went on in Dallas. He could come play for a team that would appreciate him, and with the linemates he'll have he can easily put up some numbers and at the very least retire with another respectable season and quite possibly a Cup win. Let's face it, there are very few teams that stand a real shot at winning, and Detroit is one of them. Detroit also happens to be the only team that contacted him. Ergo, if he still has a desire to win one last time, he signs with the Wings for whatever they offer.
