I'm going to go ahead and put forth the notion that winning would have been the optimal outcome for them, actually.

Why not trade Hossa here for Cleary... I'll take him back at a 5.3 cap hit.

    Zetterberg & Emma's Wedding

"Weddings are among the most exciting [of events], and this will be really cool," said Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall. ahhahahaha, that quote rules.

At grinding in the corners, digging in front of the net, and playing defense? Kariya barely even does any of those things. The Wings already have a bunch of scoring forwards. Kariya's purpose is offense. Last season he scored 43 points playing on the Blues' top line with Oshie and Backes. What line will he play on in Detroit, and what line will he play on? Will it be Kariya/Filppula/Franzen on the second line? Or perhaps it will be Kariya/Datsyuk/Holmstrom? I guess I'm finding difficulty seeing where adding Kariya in those situations makes an improvement to the roster all-around.

This post is so full of stupid. And I'm not a big insult-people-over-the-Internet person. The Wings struggled against Phoenix, a tough, up-start, unpredictable team. They did NOT get creamed by the Sharks. They dominated more than half of the series but got hosed on poorly timed 5 on 3s. And as for the Top 6, Kane, Toews, and Hossa surely is formidable. But so is Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen. I say the Wings have the edge but that's debatable. They struggled because of the team's injuries all year long. And Niemi was very mediocre. Most people who watched the playoffs remarked that in this case the bad goalies went all the way. It was a crazy fluke, but Niemi was no all-star caliber player. Now, Howard hasn't proven anything either, so neither has an edge here. So Niemi has a Cup, it's not like he was the best player for the whole playoffs. I'd be willing to bet Niemi is a one-hit wonder like so many goalies have been lately. And again, I'm not sure why saying a bunch of Chicago payers are in their low twenties says anything about their talent now.

One serious injury in five NA seasons and Flip is 'somewhat injury prone'? If anything, I'd be worried about Bolland's herniated disk that required surgical repair, since that's the kind of injury that could bother a player for their entire career. He's only two years younger than Flip too. Again, I have to ask, are you really referring to Dave Bolland? From Chicago? It's like saying 'Man, I really wish Flip had a slightly higher cap hit' since they're pretty equal players.

    Wings should sign Paul Kariya

I wasn't getting angry. Besides, it's too hot outside to chill. I'm just making what I think is a good point. Just like Modano, he's not a star player anymore and doesn't really address our needs. People are overreacting over this idea because Kariya was once a top star.

Too many people on LGW don't understand the concept of having a complete team. Probably because in their video games, they stack all 4 lines with stars, and win the Cup every year. Doesn't work that way in the NHL. Kariya has never played on the lower two lines and that's totally not his game. Also, he's not good enough to be on our top 6 unless there's injuries. When we're healthy, he'll look out of place playing with Abby or Eaves.

He's injured too often and I've had it with him diving all over the ice like a pansy. He's not much better than Crosby and Floppa in that department. Same thing as the Modano situation. What does he give us that we don't already have? Can you envision Paul Kariya (a guy that doesn't check) on a checking line? I don't. We're pretty set as far as scoring goes. That won't be what defeats us. We just need a stay at home defenseman who hits, and a grinder to a make us a more well rounded team. Besides, as someone already said, he'll command too much money.

Goodness. Since Stan Bowman came out and talked about this team's "CORE" that is really all I have heard from this s*** "fan" base lol. If he hadn't said it I think all we would hear is "nannaananhana we won the cup!" lulz. A thread without a troll is certainly a less entertaining one I will say that.

Age will matter later, but right now all of Detroit's guys are only around 30. These top sixes seem pretty comparable to me, although there is some question as to whether or not that will actually be Chicago's top six when the season starts. This is where age is actually a factor. Although despite their elderly qualities Lidstrom-Rafalski is still a quality top pair that I think is only bettered by a couple of teams, Chicago among them. He of 3.5GAA in those Finals? He wasn't very impressive in the playoffs, but don't worry, neither was Howard. Considering they're both going to be playing in on their second NHL seasons this year I'm going to reserve judgment on this one. In any case I don't know why you would say neither Chicago nor Detroit have the depth to be Cup contenders this year. If not them, who do you have coming out of the West? In my mind these two teams are still among the front runners in the conference.

Keep killing your depth Chicago, would've been easier to just trade Hossa and keep half the team. But lets all give Dale Tallon a hand for screwing over the dumboHawks with the Campbell and Huet contracts

Fighting =/= toughness. Remember when he got destroyed by Stevens, came back minutes later and scored a goal in 2003? That's toughness. Now shut the f*** up.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Would that count as cap circumvention? Gotta be careful.

The problem is the players salaries are rising faster than the salary cap. Teams are being forced to come up with ideas like this to get around it. If these mega deals get rejected and things stay the way they are, you're eventually going to have a situation where every team in the league has just two stars and a bunch of AHLers or a team of mediocre players.

You wouldn't have these kind of looong contracts if a proper soft salary cap and luxury tax was in place. Bettman is a moron, it's hard to believe this guy was David Stern's understudy.
