Kyle Quincey traded to Detroit in 3 team trade (TBL & COL)
thegerkin and 7 others reacted to Doc Holliday for a post in a topic
I think people are overvaluing Detroit's first round pick, here. Quincey is a young defenseman who can help Detroit this season, fetch a low price during the offseason, and possibly get us a couple picks in compensation if someone else decides to throw an offer sheet. Not to mention Stuart may not be here next season and Lidstrom will either be getting marginally worse or retire. Doesn't hurt to have options. -

NHL TRADING RULES
Cali-Wing-Nut and 5 others reacted to Majsheppard for a post in a topic
I have seen many, many, many people confused by this the last few days. Made even worse by the confusion over adding Piche to the Quincey trade. I thought we should have a thread where people can ask for clarification on trading rules. If nothing else maybe everyone will read this so it doesn't have to be re-said. There is this thing called the 50 CONTRACT CAP!!! You are only allowed to have 50 players signed to professional contracts of any shape or form. The Wing were already at 50. THIS MEANS ANY DEAL WE MAKE MUST HAVE A PROFESSIONAL PLAYER MOVED IN ORDER TO GET UNDER THE CONTRACT CAP! Not just guys on the roster... This includes people like McCollum, MacDonald, Piche, Tatar, Brunnstrom, Aubry, etc. You can only have 50 people inked. This does not include people like Ouellet or Quine. These players are the property of the Wings but do not have a professional contract in place. There is a time period in which they are allowed to play in the developmental leagues as a semi-pro and not be under contract. A trade can NOT BE PROCESSED BY THE NHL IF IT WILL PUT THE TEAM OVER THIS CONTACT CAP. Piche was moved for no other reason than to allow the trade to go through... -

I'm okay with this deal. Ignore that he is a former Wings cast off and look at the fact that they got a legit top 4 D-man to jump right in and play along side dips***. Detroit is close right now and I have no issues sending off a late first for someone who can come in RIGHT NOW and make an impact. I love how everyone praises Holland for his success building Cup winning teams but everyone is ready to throw him under the bus every time he makes a deal for someone who isn't Parise or Doughty. -

People are going to grumble about this because of the situation, I think. If we were adding a 26-year-old RFA with 30-35 point potential and he DIDN'T have a history with the team, people would likely be more receptive to the idea. -

And this should end the debate and the thread.... I trust Holland. I hope he gets a forward, someone earlier mentioned Ott, WOW, would that be cool!!?!? Morrow is always on my wish list, but if Ott could be had, there goes the idea that we aren't tough....You listening Cherry? -

This is such a case of tremendous "in hindsight" thinking. Nobody KNEW that Quincey would be an effective defenseman. YOU know NOW, because you have that hindsight. If everyone KNEW, then Holland would have kept Quincey and not Meech. But at that stage, Quincey was a depth defenseman who was unremarkable and appeared to have no offensive talent whatsoever. I don't need the tape. Barring a few games that I missed when I was on airplanes or out of the country--none of which Meech or Quincey were playing in--I watched every Red Wings game in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons. In 2007 Quincey played in the playoffs, yes, and he was ineffective. He was there as a super-depth defenseman, because both Kronwall and Lebda, and then Kronwall and Schneider, were injured. Yes, he was behind Lebda on the depth chart, and rightfully so. He played eight minutes per game, almost entirely against the other team's fourth line, and contributed no offense. He was carefully protected from facing the other side's top two lines; in the instances in which he found himself on the ice against them, he was often left in the dust. He was rightfully sent to Grand Rapids the next season; Lebda and Chelios were much better options. Next came 2008, when the Wings had that terrible rash of injuries to the defense in January and February. Quincey and Meech were both called up. Meech played with tremendous energy, and he ended up quarterbacking the first power play unit for a few games. He wasn't producing a lot, but he was everywhere on the ice when he was out there, and everyone was giving him rave reviews. Quincey was an afterthought. He played, yes, but he was unremarkable, and he was sent back to the minors well before either Meech or Ericsson. Fast forward to training camp in the summer of 2008. Meech played well. Quincey did not. Ken Holland then made the very obvious decision to keep the defenseman who appeared more versatile and effective. You can look back and whine all you want about how Quincey turned out to be worthwhile whereas Meech did not, but try to remember that it looked like the exact opposite at the time. "We" didn't do anything. Ken Holland did, and he made what appeared to almost everyone to be the right decision at the time. Have a drink and cool down. This isn't the end of the world. -

Wings get a 26 year old D-man who is already familiar with the system who can play the 2nd PP unit and on the PK (both slots that needed filling). Additionally he is a physical guy who can dish a nice check. He is a longer term solution too possibly who could possibly play with us and fill Stuart's spot if he leaves. Takes the pressure to over pay for a similar D-man in the offseason way off. Nice move for this year and next year. -

I look at it this way, Detroit couldn't give him the ice time so they paid a 26-30 overall pick for someone to give him the ice time and help him develop. At 26 he is going to start playing his best hockey, I hope. Crash -

2 pointsAnd, per Ansar Khan, what Holland said: Ken Holland: “I talked to (Colorado GM) Greg Sherman a few days ago about Quincey and we didn't have a fit. In the last 48 hours, Steve (Yzerman) called me and said he had a deal to get Quincey and asked if we're interested. We got a 26-year-old defenseman who's got experience. He's played 20-plus minutes. He competes. He's coming into his prime. We expect him to be on our team going forward, and he improves our team on the back end this year. We should have never let him go. It worked out great for him. He got an opportunity in L.A .and Colorado."

If waiving an unremarkable defenseman who turned out to be a serviceable defenseman is THE gaffe of Holland's career, then he's done so brilliantly that nobody should be complaining. -

Quincey did not magically transform into a 20 min a night defenseman overnight, and Meech is no longer playing in the NHL. Clearly the Wings staff were off in their evaluations of both of them. -

He was put on waivers because Meech constantly outplayed him. Were you watching hockey back then, or did you completely miss that Quincey did not at all attract attention whereas Meech played very well in 2008 and 2009? Yeesh. Also--yes, grammar--it's "should have," not "should of." -

Has Ovechkin Passed His Prime?
roboturner and one other reacted to dat's sick for a post in a topic
I'm not sure if he definitely passed his prime, however this is why I laughed at people who a couple of years ago said "Imagine how good Ovie will be when he hits his prime!" as if he'd just keep on improving and would eventually score 90 goals a season. Players, people, careers, very rarely work that way. And especially not for players like Ovechkin. Ever since entering the league he's been one-dimensional and he has done NOTHING to change that. When he's not scoring he's not much use to a team to be honest. He's not a playmaker and he sure as hell can't play defense. Looking at him now and comparing him to a few years ago you can't see much of a difference honestly, except maybe he's lost a few percent of his explosiveness, speed and ungodly stamina. And other teams have adapted to how he plays. That's all it takes for a guy that doesn't have a lot in the way of 'hockey smarts' to go from being a superstar to being almost mediocre. He's predictable, always has been. It's just that in the past he was unstoppable even though everyone knew what he was going to do. Maybe there's some truth to the steroid rumors, maybe he wasn't happy with Bodreau and isn't happy with Hunter. I'm sure he's hurting with Backstrom not being around to set him up for open nets. Maybe he hasn't been working as hard during the last few offseasons because he's not as motivated, having a long, lucrative contract and being a huge star. But it's really something, the way he's gone off the radar this year. Rarely ever do you see his name on NHL.com, compared to every day 2 seasons ago. Crosby vs. Ovechkin discussions of years past seem ridiculous now, even though Sid's career could be over. Even putting Ovie ahead of Datsyuk would be insanity at this point. I'm sure he can bounce back and do better than he is now, but unless he starts really working on becoming a better all-around player I don't think he'll ever dominate the league again. -

Staal is an elite talent in this league. His has a significantly high cap hit but that would not stop any team from picking him up. Every team would want him. That being said, absolutely zero chance that the Hurricanes even consider moving him. Kaberle is a joke. -

The ******* Chelsea defense looked better today than the Wings. Giving up odd man rushes and easy shots from the point. Also, they're not picking up men in the crease. Total defensive failure in every aspect. Howard is carrying us right now. -
