When every team in the entire league "overpays" players, the team that doesn't is going to lose. Every team overpays a few players, thats how you get quality free agents. Holland needs to improve the top 6, Lecavalier is worth 5 million a season.

I honestly don't understand the fixation with Stephen Weiss, as the pundits are now saying he's the most likely to be signed by Holland at this point. Replacing one soft, small center in Filppula with another soft, small, center for almost the same price...not exactly a game changing move.

    Tim Thomas watch 2013

Tim Thomas sat out the final year of his contract to focus on “friends, family and faith”. Those things come before career, and I completely understand his decision.

    2013 NHL Entry Draft Discussion

Well, you are entitled to your opinion on that just as much as you are on the draft. I was just saying that it seems like others disagree with your negative opinion of the Wings' 2013 draft.... so you may not be in the consensus there. bleacherreport.com.... Greatest Needs: Forward depth Top Pick(s): RW Anthony Mantha, RW Zach Nastasiuk, LW Tyler Bertuzzi, C Mattias Janmark-Nylen The Detroit Red Wings had a number of options with their first-round pick. They ended up selecting the top goal scorer in junior hockey, winger Anthony Mantha. Mantha scored 50 goals last season and has a great shot. He needs to get more involved physically, but the Red Wings can give him the time to develop that element in his game. The Wings also added Zach Nastasiuk of the Owen Sound Attack. He switched to the wing halfway through the season, and it made a huge difference in his game. They also added winger Tyler Bertuzzi who is a project, but has some good bloodlines as the nephew of Todd Bertuzzi. It was some good drafting by the Red Wings. Grade: B+ sportingnews.com.... DETROIT RED WINGS: A. Got an extra second-round pick for being willing to move down two spots in the first round, where they came away with a fine prospect in Anthony Mantha. Didn’t pick anyone smaller than 6-0, 178-pound Tyler Bertuzzi, selected with that extra second-rounder. The reality is that, obviously, no one will know for a while how good the draftw as for anyone. But, I just don't see how anyone on this board can be complaining about this draft. It seems like in every thread multiple people are whining that the Wings and their prospects are too small and not gritty enough. So, they draft size and grit. And there's still complaining. I don't pay enough attention to who says what, so I am not directly calling you a hypocrite in particular. Just speaking about the board in general.... it seemed to me like a draft that LGW should have been pretty pleased with. I guess everyone can;t be pleased.... and some will just always find something to complain about (again, not necessarily you.... just venting I guess).

I have my heart set on it being named after our new superstar: Hampus Melen Arena.

Let them ALL go. If they dont want to be here, fine. We have a great core. Filppula, Brunner, Cleary, Samuelsson, Bertuzzi, White = BYE.

Red Wings No Longer "Presented by Amway!"

Being sponsored by someone gives us money. Maybe they're just working their way through the phone book. Next year, the Detroit Red Wings sponsored by Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Be honest, guys, you're waiting for Hooters, right?

Didn't people on here think he was going to get 5-6 million or something? lol Deal is good for the Hawks and Bickell. Thank F we can put the "Let's sign Bickell" debate to bed.

    2013 NHL Entry Draft Discussion

Grading a teams draft is total B.S. I'm sure people thought we were crazy for taking a small forward from Russia and a small forward from Sweden in the late rounds and I think turned out pretty well. If Mantha becomes a star and any other pick even makes the team I'm happy.

Fricking buyout Sammy already! We already got Mantha....finish this offseason by dumping Sammy, letting Cleary and Flip walk. Sign Lecavalier. Then go for a trade to better the team even more!

Sometimes it is better, to know a little bit about the people posting stuff. I have intended and also studied economics and I know the view of some economists I just don't agree with them, because no matter how you slice it, there is always a bigger picture one. Amway is a pyramid scheme, period. Schemes like that are built to create a huge income for the founders/co-founders and early starters by milking all the people who join later. There is a reason why such schemes are often targeted by laws. Also there is difference between having a team presented by .... or just paying to show up on the bill boards, megatron or wherever. Naming the new arena after some famous persons just would show the rest of the league, how to do things the right way. Tell me you wouldn't love a name like "The Geordie Howe Palace", "The Yzerman Dome", Lidströms Plaza or the "Mike Illitch Arena" I really think Mike deserves to get his name on it he has done so much for this team and the city of Detroit.

    Tim Thomas watch 2013

Luongo really has handled this professionally and with a lot of class Gillis on the other hand comes off like a compete idiot. It's really amazing, how this guy can still have a job after that fiasco. Luongo has put up his house for sale and I highly doubt, that he is thrilled right now. Gillis only has himself to blame for this. As for Thomas when he is on his game, he is as dominant as a goaltender can be I also love the fact, that he doesn't give a crap about being mainstream (= political playball) for a bunch of idiots. I think, he he will definately end up in Philly or Edmonton, maybe Buffalo as a mentor for Enrot if they trade Miller. Good luck Timmy

Apparently, according to media around Boston (Mainly talk radio so no links) the B's as a team, both players and management, were not at all happy with his antics. If he had stayed on the team I think the White House non visit would have blown over, rather been blown over by his performance. But the way it played out he left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. We shall see if that stops a team like Philly (who routinely throws bad money at goalies) from picking him up.

    Don't worry, neither will Gillis.

$8m, tops, and that would compromise NYR's chance at a Cup anytime soon.

Holland said that he was unsure if the Wings would make the playoffs. He did not say that there was a good chance they would not. In the event, they did, and Filppula's contributions, though bare, were important. The mere fact that the Wings made the playoffs and almost made the conference finals pretty much vindicates Holland's choice to hang on to his 2nd-line left wing. On a grammatical note, it's should have. Jagr had 24 points in 36 games when the trade deadline rolled around. He is a big body, a future Hall-of-Famer, and a proven winner. Filppula was in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his career. More, he is none of the above, nor is he a "great" two-way player; he is, rather, merely a fairly good one. In other words, there's no comparison. Jagr came along with production, physical assets, and intangibles, none of which Filppula brought to the table. Filppula may have fetched a 3rd-round draft pick.
