2019 Draft
F.Michael and 6 others reacted to LeftWinger for a post in a topic
Ok. So I've done a 180 on this. Looking at it calmly, obviously wanting the #1 or best odds to get it, but honestly finishing 6th and winning it, rather than last and losing it, sounds good. Since the odds are so stacked against teams anyhow. There are a lot of great players in the top 10, we will get an impact player for sure. Plus I am so happy to see this team winning on the backs of our kids. It'd almost be better to draft in a slot where we can pick a player based on need rather than having to pick a player because he is projected top 2. Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to win Hughes or Kakko though, and hope we can, but we'll get better next year no matter what. -

There should be a losers bracket where the best 8 teams not in the playoffs compete in a best of 3 tourney. Top 4 teams are awarded the top 4 picks based on how they finish. All other teams draft positions determined normally. -

I would be stoked if we got Cozens. He could end up being great on the Wings. Lots of speed and RIGHT HANDED. Mantha-Larkin-Bertuzzi Athanasiou-Cozens-Zadina Hirose-Veleno-Rasmussen One more top 10 right hander next year, and we will have a top 9 thats off the chart. SPEED. -

Lol I thought @F.Michael had a great analogy yesterday. To paraphrase him, "When you eat urinal cakes, you don't learn to hate urinal cakes, you get used to the taste of urinal cakes" A winning team expects to win when they take the ice. That's absolutely the culture and vibe we need to rekindle in that lockerroom. It's great to see the kids doing it without the vets. For all those who hate veteran contracts and stop gaps this should be very encouraging for you right now. These kids are proving they don't need Daley's and Nielsen's to get the job done. Believe you me, management is watching this too. -

Witter after the fight last night It case it has not dawned on anyone yet, these last 3 games are probably the last time you will ever get a chance to see Kronwall play again. Hoping he throws one last big kronwall on Crosby on his way out. Lets go red team! -

Think of it this way: would you rather that the young players who will be taking over the mantle in the next year or two be showing no signs that they can actually deliver? If things really were that dire-- if we were so utterly devoid of talent and spark, however inconsistent-- then drafting first vs. fifth was never going to make the difference in turning this team around. At least this way you have a budding framework that you can build around and coherently plan on dropping some good draft talent into. -

On second thought, I may have to disappoint you. I'm considering jumping off the tank and cheering the team on with everyone else. Actually, the thought of passing the Rangers and falling to 8th just occurred to me so nvm. And no this wasn't intended to be an April's joke And now I'm mentally flip flopping -

1 pointFor sure. Easily top 5 pick of that draft. I'd probably rank him in the top 3. He's not the only recent draft day steal either... 2012 Athanasiou - 110th overall -> top 15 pick. 2013 Mantha - 20th overall -> top 10 pick. Bertuzzi - 58th overall -> top 30 pick. Too early to say on the past 3 drafts, but Cholowski (20th overall) and Hronek (53rd overall) could be in the top 10-15 in a couple years. All of Zadina (6th overall), Veleno (30th overall) and McIsaac (36th overall) could be steals as well.

I really hope McIlrath, and Witkowski finish the season on the ice, and not in the press box...Their enthusiasm for rough play makes these last few games more entertaining. -

1 pointRemember that time the Wings were in 29th place and then they won some games and slipped to 27th and you wouldn't stop crying about it and you kept talking passive-aggressive s*** about some of your fellow Wings fans because they refused to be sad about the Wings winning games? Good times.

Might as well. These idiot players seem to be under the impression that it's ok to win games, which means we have a serious culture problem within this organization. Nuke it from orbit. Burn it to the ground. No survivors. -

I don't think Blashill will ever win a cup. I think he's a very mediocre coach. I also see no reason to fire Blashill at the current moment. Does anyone remember what the upsell on this guy was? It was that he's good with kids. So I find it kind of funny that those who advocate for rebuilding and leaning on the kids, also advocate for firing the coach who's good with kids. And our kids are doing pretty well at the moment... Blashill absolutely deserves credit for the success of the kids he's coached into this league. Just like the scouts who found those kids deserve credit for findin' em. If we were on the cusp of shedding a lot of bad contracts and having a lot of good young players enter their prime, I'd be gung-ho ready to fire this guy. But we're not. However, and oddly enough, in 2 years at the end of this contract we will be shedding a lot of bad contracts and this wave of youth will enter prime performance years. Ask me if I wanna fire Blashill then. I may have a different answer. Till then, he's fine where he is. Maintain the rebuild ship, it's on good course. -

AA is getting more minutes now because: 1. There are fewer top 6 forwards ahead of him on the roster now. 2. He's playing better now than he was last season. Maybe his coach had something to do with that? -

Blaming Blashill for the Wings problems is like blaming the front headlight for the car running out of gas. -

This should come as no surprise to anyone. Blashill is a good coach with a s***ty team. The young players (Larkin, Mantha, Athanasiou, Bertuzzi, Hronek, etc.) that he has coached have all taken steps in the right direction. The old players (Kronwall, Ericsson, Daley, Vanek, etc.) will be fading out over the next couple years, and we'll start to see even more youth (Zadina, Svechnikov, Veleno, McIsaac, '19 first round pick, etc.) coming in. I look forward to see what he can do with a good team over the next couple years. It's amazing that some "idiots" still think that Blashill is the reason this team isn't good right now... -

Well - IF Stevie Y returns, and takes up a job within the Wings organization - Blashill will at least be here 1 season (unless he's let go mid-season). To me it's really no big deal...Regardless who we draft this summer we'll still be at, or near the bottom of the standings. It's all part of the 'rebuild' folks
