He grew up in New York. Played his college hockey at NYU. Makes sense. Worth noting: Datsyuk's mother is Mike Richter. You've gotta think that'll be a factor.

Poll: Datsyuk on the team at 41?

I think we are due for another bottom 4-7 year. So yea I wouldn't mind. But only on a 1 year deal. Datz will bring more people to LCA as well, which is really needed. I for one, would go to at least more one game to see Datz play again. I am not bent on how he left like many are. Life happens, things change, not like he cost us a Cup or he joined TOR. If he going to come back to the NHL, it may as well be in a Red Wing jersey. I would rather see him in the KHL than join another NHL team outside of the Red Wings. Not going to lie, I would love to see Datz and Panarin on the same line. Wishful thinking.

Poll: Datsyuk on the team at 41?

Deep down I dont want him coming back, but with that said. if I am Yzerman and Datsyuk asks to return, I probably bring him back as long as its not stupid money. He can help with the kids, and I'd like to see him have a proper send off. Maybe we can trade Nielen to Arizona and give Datsyuk his spot lol.

Exactly. Lets not Edmonton this ship and sign Lucic because we're excited and wanna accelerate. I suspect Yzerman won't sign anyone major unless he really has his eyes on someone he thinks is low key really good like a Stralman. Other than that he'll probably sign depth players to fill whatever holes he sees, and maybe a project player like a Johnson/Gourde/Conacher. Rinse and repeat until a few bad contracts are off the books and some more kids are up... then we strike.

Great to hear. This is exactly how I feel Yzerman should be approaching things. No need in rushing things. There's already a very strong foundation in place built by Holland, continue on that path. We need a strong draft coming up in June, make a few shrewd moves over the next year or so, and this team will be back on top in no time.

Umm, where are the options for "No" and "Hell No"?... LOL I just said basically the exact same thing in another thread... I don't really want him back at this point, but I'd take him over Nielsen for sure...

Good take from former Tampa GM Brian Lawton: "Yzerman is not going to force things, he's going to do something similar to what he did with the Lightning. He's gonna build something to last. That will be his goal with Detroit. He's not gonna do anything crazy, he's not going to run out and sign the top free agents. You're not gonna see a top guy like Erik Karlsson signing in Detroit. He's gonna focus on his current group and putting the right processes in place to returning the Red Wings to the glory days they know so well." Paraphrasing of course. Good take Bry man

Seriously Krieder - Zibanejad - Kakko Buchnevich - Namestnikov - Kravtsov Chytil - Strome - Vesey Lemieux - Howden - Fast Skej - Shattenkik Staal - Pionk Hakej - Deangelo Lundqvist Georgiev That lineup is so young and laden with talent that is going to boom in like 2 or 3 years. Their oldest forward in that lineup is Kreider at 28, and their youngest Dman is Staal at 32 That would be pretty solid. I worry about Datsyuk playing a full season at this point though.

Poll: Datsyuk on the team at 41?

Should be an upgrade over Vanek at the same or lower caphit. If he returns I'm expecting a really team friendly deal at a maximum of 2 years considering how he left. Would love to see Dats finish his career as a Red Wing.

Poll: Datsyuk on the team at 41?

Maybe he went to Russia to rebuild his legs with stem cells or some other procedure that couldn't be done here. I'd love to have him back personally. But only on a year to year basis at a couple mill max.. And if we do bring him back, I agree that neilsen has to go. I don't want bringing pav back to switch AA back to wing. I'd like him to keep developing as a center.

    Kronwall

Obviously Kronner has multiple appearances. Witter and Bowey with some of the bigger hits though.

@krsmith17 he may honestly just be trolling like he does. This is what someone in grade 3 would posit. Sad!

He's having his jesus is back fan-boy moment. Yzerman's just gonna magically make it all better again, ya know, cause Yzerman. Most of us here realize it's going to take years of shrewd building before what he's advocating happens For the #4 worst team in the league ladden with years of bad contracts it is

Sure, a good GM could probably work around the cap to sign Karlsson. A better GM would understand that signing Karlsson in the Red Wings current situation to a ridiculous contract is a bad move...

We have the best looking GM in the league. Not even close. What a handsome bastard...

I highly doubt he's parting with a 22 year old near point-per-game Larkin or our 1st round picks for anyone anytime soon This is 100% a slipper slope fallacy. You're falsely asserting that signing Karlsson is going to snowball into a magical chain of events where we get all kinds of superstars. Your argument isn't based on anything other than nostalgia and wishful thinking. And @krsmith17 is way ahead of your point saying this is even less likely an outcome to happen in the cap era. You're completely misrepresenting Yzerman's time with the Bolts. His first years were spent buying out large contracts like Lecavalier, signing a plethora of depth guys to fill holes, experimenting with goaltenders and coaches, and steadily drafting well. He did not enter a basement team stricken with bad contracts and start signing potential HOF Dman. Far from that. It was not until later that Yzerman was able and willing to tweak his roster in a significant way. In this regards the primary difference to me was that Holland seems to prefer FA when adding, whereas Yzerman more often opted to trade n sign. More of your slippery slope argument. The only thing you got right is we are not getting Karlsson. And I think other folks on this board, Erik Karlsson, and Steve Yzerman understand the real reasons behind that better than you do.

Mantha, AA and Bert will by due for pay in 1 year but each of them will be less pay than Larkin and should be affordable. Ericsson, Daley and Howard will be off the books by then so it's no issue. Green will be on LTIR probably with his health. Our younger goalie will be cheap. AA, Bert and Mantha will be resigned and we can still afford a superstar salary with our cap space.
