We can talk about UFA's...... But why do that to ourselves? We have no cap space. We can't even sign our own RFA's.... Next year we need to resign Mantha and Larkin and AA isn't signed yet. Then there is Mrazek, Sheahan, etc.....

Sure does. Tends to even out over a season though, and it's the long term result that matters anyhow. As long as we either totally suck or make the playoffs I'm all good. No just outside stuff. Either truly enjoy April or get a shot at Dahlin.

Next year Mantha and Larkin will be junior guys not worth investing coin on either right? Will everyone quickly bid them adios when they ask for $4Mill each? AA was a bright spot last year constantly in Blashill's dog house due to his defense as a forward and an after thought in negotiations due to Holland's past bad contracts and inability to make a trade. Tatar shouldn't have been signed and Nyquist, Nielsen or Sheahan dealt. If things are tight now what happens next year when Holland's GM skills are on display again with an even worse cap situation? Sorry AA you deserved a better fate both from a coach and from an organization.

xault reacted to kickazz in Twilight years Zetterberg vs. Datsyuk
Well, statistically Dats always made everyones Corsi significantly higher so the advance stats answer is probably Datsyuk. But actual goals/assists (the end result so to speak) wise, Z made Hudler, Filpula, Samulssen, Larkin, Mantha, Abdelkader, Nyquist, Tatar, Brunner (the list goes on.. Bertuzzi, Cleary) all look like top 6 players, or better top 6 players. Most of Datsyuk's linemates were the better wingers on the team like Hossa, Franzen, Holmstrom, even Zetterberg himself. Towards the tail end of his career Datsyuk got stuck with Richards for a while though while Z got to play with Nyquist.
Having said all that, if Zetterberg was ever slumping, Datsyuk was always the go-to player they put him with to get him going. The same wasn't true for Datsyuk, he rarely lost consistency and if he did, he usually found it back himself

I think it will be between Martin and Draper when Holland moves up or out. In saying that, I think it would be a poor decision to hire anyone within the organization to become the next GM. This team needs a new look, new approach, and that starts from the top. I think the best thing for this team would be to go outside the organization to find Holland's replacement. Who? I have no idea...

Zetterberg, Abdelkader, Helm, Nielsen, Ericsson, Kronwall, Dekeyeser, Howard, Mrazek, Franzen, Daley all are on the books for over $3 mil this year.  Weiss is still on the books as a buy out, $2.6 mil this year and $1.667 mil for the next three years.  Glendening is getting double what he should be.

I have a hard time crapping on Holland for any of these.  At the time they were signed they were reasonable.
Zetterberg: Great deal when he signed it, the retroactive punishment for violating the spirit of the CBA makes this potentially hurt.
    Franzen: Ditto.
Ericsson: Probably would have gotten at least that contract and maybe more on the market.  Injuries and an apparent fear of getting hurt again have turned him from a solid player into a waste of space.
Kronwall: Was a legit #1 D, although not elite.  Very good deal until his knee fell apart.
Howard:Was paid like an average starting goalie, which he is.  When he's healthy and confident, he's one of the better goalies in the league.  Problem is, half the time he's hurt or is fighting the puck and is terrible.
Mrazek: Looked like he was on track to be a legit #1, until he as named the #1.  Apparent entitled attitude and refusal to listen to coaches about what his weaknesses were combined with the rest of the NHL figuring out said weaknesses led to him being one of the worst goalies in the league last year.  Looks like the team has soured on him and it may take a small miracle for him to stay after this year.
Weiss: They lost Filpulla, needed a #2 center, and the wrist injury he dealt with the year before was healed.  Then he hurt his groin, didn't say anything and made it worse, lost Babcock's confidence, and was a complete disaster.
The rest of these deals were terrible from day 1.
Daley: In a vacuum it's not a bad deal.  Given where the Wings are now, it was dumb.
Abdelkader: Took a grinder who had never scored much until he played with Datsyuk and Zetterberg for a year and rewarded him with a 7 year deal a year before he was set to be a free agent when he was starting to get close to the age players like him start slowing down.  What could go wrong with that?  I said the day he signed it he'd never score 20 goals in a season again, and it looks like I'm going to be right.
Helm: "Best 3rd line center in the league" gets moved to a scoring line, does nothing, still gets a 5 year deal for too much money.  Could have found someone almost as good for a lot less.
Dekeyser: Holland jumped the gun and paid him like was was 100% to continue to improve.  Was exposed when he was forced to play against better competition.
Glendening: Double the $ and term of what he should get.  The ultimate replaceable player who has little talent and gets by on hard work, basically a faster Matt Ellis.  Should have spent his career on a series of one and two year deals for near league minimum.
Nielsen: Aging center who put up the numbers he did because of who he played with as much as because of what he was.  He's only going to continue to decline.  Desperation signing, too long, too much money, and at a time when they should have been going with a youth movement.  Arguable the worst of the bunch, even looking at the others in hind sight.

xault reacted to DickieDunn in Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals
    1) He may have meant if they don't feel I'm worth a longer deal they probably don't feel I'm worth keeping.
    2) He has proven he's a good goal scorer and is in his last year of rfa status. Generally those guys get similar deals to what a ufa would get.
    3) Abdelkader was in the same situation and the deal got done quick.
    4) The idea that these guys owe the team something and they should keep their mouths shut publicly if they're unhappy is ridiculous. You don't think every other player in the NHL tells their GM they want X contract or they walk? Just because Tatar did it in a paper in Europe doesn't make him a bad guy or greedy or whatever problem you have with him over it. It makes him honest. I'd rather have some guys who speak up than have everyone give the same bland cliche answers every time.

Never sign a player to a multi year deal that takes him past 35. Wheels fall off before then. Yes, he can skate now. By year 2 or 3 probably not so much.

We need an entire overhaul upstairs.  We don't need any of his assts. taking over with the same philosophy. We need an entire new coaching staff, and have about 6-8 players sold off for whatever we can get. I guarantee we can get 6 and 7th round picks for all the players mentioned above in a fire sale.  I don't care really. Of those players mentioned, I'd keep DD and Sheahan though.

I would start by asking them to submit their list of teams in their clause and then contact those teams and take low picks just to get rid of them.

Not if Holland is going to screw the pooch with his top 10 picks though. I agree though, this team needs a rebuild not a retool, and that starts by dumping all the salary we can, even if its for 7th round picks....E, Nyquist, Helm, Howard, etc...we need to open up about $20M in cap and be one of those team that needs to meet the cap floor.  Then we can maybe outbid some teams for a REAL upgrade to out team.

For a 19 year old kid playing D, I think he had a fairly decent season. In my opinion he would of easily been our 2-3 be player on D last season.

Where did you get that information?  I don't think it's even close.  Max deal Crosby could have signed was $14M I think....max for McDavid is $15M.  If I look at cap history, the cap for the up coming year when Crosby signed was $60M or so, but I think that was post-CBA adjustment (was actually $70.2M when he signed).  Even if you were to use a cap of $60M, Crosby's deal was significantly more discounted than McDavid's....if he actually gets 13.25M.

Poile has already said that he's looking for a top 6 forward (Duchene), but isn't willing to move any of his top 4 defensemen... How he expects to pull that off, I have no idea... Edit: what amato said...
But yeah, we need to be calling teams like Nashville, Anaheim, Winnipeg, Carolina, Philadelphia, etc to see if there's a deal to be made. I'm fully confident that if we go into this season without making any significant changes, we will have a good shot at Dahlin / Svechnikov in a year's time.
