From the DRW official Twitter feed:

Lidstrom confirmed that Barry Trotz said 'please don't retire' while in the handshake line following the NSH series.



Although, I suppose you could take that one of two ways:

  • Trotz believes Lids deserves a better sendoff than a 5-game first round loss
  • Trotz secretly thinks Lidstrom is declining fast and would be a detriment to the Wings and therefore, an asset to the Preds
I've always liked Trotz, so I'd like to think it's the former.

I believe that Trotz was serious. Everything he has said previously indicates to me that he looks up to Lidstrom as much as his lack of a neck allows.

My money on the board pledge:

$1 for each goal scored by a player after whom I have named a hamster.

An additional $5 for each hat trick scored by a player after whom I have named a hamster.

An additional $10 if any of the above goals is the GWG goal that gives us the series win.

An additional $50 if it is the GWG that wins us the Cup.

$5 for a SO by Jimmy.

Hamsters' names (current players in RED):  Henrik Pavel Tomas Nicklas Dominik

                                                                      Niklas Matthieu Daniel Robert

                                                                      Johan Andreas Valtteri Jonathan

                                                                      Andrew Patrick Ian Todd

Yeah I heard this on 97.1 today and it gave me a lot of respect for Trotz.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing to myself yesterday. "Trotz...pretty classy." Actually, if memory serves, I think I woke up with that thought in my head.

I'd respect him more if he publically called out the fans in the series for acting like classless fools. Chanting you suck in a line where Zetter forgives Weber and they both act classy should be a learning moment for the trashy Preds fans.

Tootoo does NOT belong on this team. He is classless and I would rather see the Wings be bad than classless. I feel the same way about Bertuzzi as well, but he at least CAN make the team better. With Tootoo the team becomes worse and in danger of being classless. Would you have liked Claude on the team? Or Roy? No. So why would you be okay with that POS.

Personally, I think Trotz said that to Lidstrom because he realizes that if Lidstrom returned it would make it that much more difficult (cap-wise) for the Wings to sign Suter. This is all strategy and posturing by Trotz.

As I said in the game day thread of game 5 when this was first mentioned, it's a very classy act by Trotz. The guy is a darn good coach, and imho, it's a crime that he doesn't have a Jack Adams trophy yet. I honestly believe that it was purely him being classy and not trying any gamesmanship. Kudos to him.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care that he said this? We all love TPH and want him to stay for at least another year, that doesn't make us all classy. Classiness aside, it was just a nice thing to say is all.

When your in that kind of environment your not thinking of plotting any strategy trying to make his team better next year or the wings easier to beat. He generally wants lids back.

Thats got to mean a lot to lids coming from another coach. Nice to see

Thats a class act I still believe it was a very clean series minus the Weber-incident and I have a feeling they might win it all this year. Fully expecting Babcock would say something similar if it came down to Weber being 41 old.

I think every coach in the league respects Lidstrom. Same with every player probably.

Anyway, Always liked Trotz. He's stuck with his team all this time and that shows a lot. Classy thing for him to say to the greatest Defenseman of all time.

With the exception of one who accused him of faking a nagging injury a few years ago.
