kook_10 1,705 Report post Posted August 29, 2013 agreed. they're probably extremely happy to lose that god awful contract in the long run. if they manage to make the playoffs this year, i'm sure they won't be upset about losing kovy at all. I bet that they couldn't sell the franchise with that contract on the books. That's probably why the whole thing was amicable.

That's probably why the whole thing was amicable. i wouldn't be surprised. and i'm sure they'll recover (teamwise).... yeah, kovy's a great offensive player but the devils have one of the best goalie tandems in the league and have some pretty good younger talent imo
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted August 30, 2013 KHL_Hockey @KHL_hockey Ilya Kovalchuk was introduced at a member of @hcSKA today. @hcSKA_News pic.twitter.com/kTRWhhNEJb 6:33 PM - 29 Aug 2013 No pictures of him skating around in a Devils jersey...yet. 1 wingedominance13 reacted to this
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) From The Score: When it comes to the KHL salary cap, apparently not all teams are playing by the same rules. In an exclusive interview with Sovietsky Sport's Pavel Lysenkov, KHL president Alexander Medvedev revealed that seven former NHL players were signed to deals that were not subjected to their respective teams' cap limits. The players in question are: Ilya Kovalchuk (SKA), Alexander Radulov (CSKA Moscow), Anton Babchuk (Salavat Yulaev), Andrei Kostitsyn (Avanguard Omsk), Alexander Burmistrov (AK Bars Kazan), Leo Komarov (Dynamo Moscow) and Ruslan Fedotenko (Donbass). ... Opie 308 Report post Posted September 3, 2013 LOL, Can this guy sign a deal that doesn't break some sort of rules? You know when anything hockey related in Russia is being "questioned" that it must be real bad. The weird part is the other players, none of them deserve any special treatment. I mean I get it, if you own a KHL team you do everything you can to get a guy like Kovy, but Babchuk or Burmistrov, not sure I bend the rules for them! marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted March 23, 2015 Just saw on TSN that Kovalchuk may be looking to find his way back to the NHL. To do so, he either needs to take a full year off of pro hockey, or if he signs for a team, all other 29 teams must sign off on it. There seems to be a possible loop hole that he could just go back to playing for the Devils to avoid the whole 29 other teams signing off thing. Gonna be interesting to see what happens. Not at all surprising. He made a rash decision(I'm assuming) and now is regretting it. Also not to start any kind of political discussion, but the current political climate in Russia has to be weighing on his decision to come back to the NHL. 1 marcaractac reacted to this

frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 Devils are entering their rebuild/retool phase soon so I doubt they'll have any use for a 30 + highly paid former player, also I can't see any of the other teams signing off on this I would be a Radulov 2 situation. I'm not going into any political discusson here but I believe the downslope of the Russian currency might have something to do with it maybe. Also I'm starting to wonder at what point in his life does this guy think he has made enough money, he might very well have earned more than 60 $ mill. till now. Kovalchuck seems to be believe h can walk in and out of he leagues when he decides to do so no matter if he has a contract or not *lol*
Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 I wouldn't mind seeing him on a 1 or 2-year deal here. I know he kind of has a reputation of being lazy defensively but he can still score and has a rocket of a shot.

Nevermind 363 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 Even if we have a chance, I'm not really interested in spending the $7 million or whatever it would take to sign him to a long-term deal. Besides, if Babcock is still coach he might roll something like this... PavelValerievichDatsyuk 1,935 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 Since he retired a Devil, dont the Devils reserve his rights until that contract is complete? I dont understand how this would work. Lamariello let him go and relinquished his NHL rights to allow him to go to the KHL. He's no longer tied to the team. If he comes back for another team, that would make that a bad GM decision. It was classy at the time, though, so maybe Kovalchuck would feel some sort of debt to him or just a general respect. 1 Gordie Howe hat trick reacted to this

He's making a ton of money and playing at home. well, i'm not judging his paycheck or geographical location. i'm more interested in his actions. even if that Finnish newspaper is wrong and he has no intention to return to nhl, what he had been doing signing and resigning his contract with devils and then retiring... it looks to me as if he is mentally handicapped.
