Per Helene St. James:

"#RedWings have come to terms on two-year deal with forward Gustav Nyquist, average salary cap hit of $950,000."

Nice price tag, for sure. Glad to have him locked up.

The most popular choice among the Red Wings as to who would volunteer to play goalie – several Panthers did in their game – was Brendan Smith.

"He's pretty competitive and he seems to be good at everything," Justin Abdelkader said. "He'd volunteer himself."

Babcock was a bit more hesitant about Smith. "Yeah, yeah, just work on getting out of your zone," Babcock said

'bout time.

I was figuring a 1 year at ~$1m but see no issues with 2 years either.

Don't know how we're gonna shed the cap. Aren't we about 2 mil over now?

With deferring bonuses until the 2014-15 season, the Wings are currently ~$640k above the cap & 2 players above the roster limit.

Now if we can only sign Brunner, and say "adieu" to Sammy, and Bert.

IMHO, Kenny has done a masterful job this offseason with his signings of Alfredsson, Weiss, and getting Goose and Andersson at great cap hits. Now we just need to see how he trims the roster. I've got a good feeling this season. I also think Nyquist is going to have a breakout year.
It's pronounced "Zim" not "Exim". Aw heck with it, just call me Scott.

So far so good. But Holland not being able to unload anyone via trade worries me. DeKeyser is the only one who can be sent down to the AHL, which worries me. If we can't unload anyone, he might be sent down.

Can't Holland dump Bert, and Sammy down to GR to help out on cap space?

Not true.  Nyquist is still waiver exempt as of right now.  As soon as he plays 2 more games in the NHL this season though, his exemption expires.
