There's suggestion on the Detroit News by Krupa that says declining skills may be at the heart of Pav's possible decision to retire after this season. Not that I am saying Pav is bad, but it is obvious his age is catching him.

I suggest to Holland that he go hard and spare NO expense on trying to get Stamkos so Pav can move to the 3rd line (along with Z) and take the pressure off of him to be the top player here, and then maybe he'll finish his contract out.

Its on you Holland! Get this done! Spare NO expense!

I remember when Lidstrom didn't look the same anymore in his final season. He chose to retire rather than come back just to be average. Some guys want to play at a top level or retire.

I wouldn't blame him, but I think he'll finish out his contract and retire. This rumor comes around every year. I seem to remember him not addressing it the last few times either. This year or next though, the sad reality is that time is ticking for us to witness the great talent that is Pavel Datsyuk wearing the winged wheel, and that is the saddest hockey thought I've had since it was near the end of Stevie's career. I don't say that to slight Lidstrom, but it's just a different sort of magic Pavel could conjure that no one will soon be able to do again.

Wouldn't surprise me at all the guy is ultra competitive and not being able to stay healthy or deke around like only he can must be extremely tough for him. I remember Nick delaying his retirement because the retirement of Rafalski and the loss of Stuart caught Holland off guard. I mean, everyone could see it in his eyes after the Nashville game...Nick looked done and incredible frustrated

Seeing the game slowly walking away from you must be such a hard reality for these guys and I'm sure it sucks.

Even if Pasha is playing his last year it will be one sad day after he heads back to Russia..time is ticking and it's ticking fast

In the summer of 2013, Pavel Datsyuk made a financial commitment to this team that would pay him among the elite forwards in the NHL through the 2016-2017 NHL season. He made this commitment as a 35 year old player, fully aware of the ramifications an early retirement would cause this organization if he retired only 2 short years after making this decision.

We are not witnessing someone who has "urgent family" matters back home (because he wouldn't be here now if that was the case) and we are not witnessing someone who has career ending physical issues. From all I have read, we are witnessing someone who simply doesn't know if he wants to play for the Red Wings next season, or another team in Russia - but probably wants to play at home and certainly can't say it while the Detroit Red Wings are trying to make the playoffs.

Why is this? Maybe it's Blashill, maybe our roster, or maybe he promised a team owner in Russia a couple of great years of hockey... But I can tell you one thing - If Pavel Datsyuk decides to walk away from his commitment to us, collects his $7.5 Million (cap) dollars, collaterally prevents us from signing Steven Stamkos and also gets paid to play hockey in Russia next year... I hope he never gets mentioned/honoured/recognized again by any member of the Detroit Red Wings.

Stop being emotional - these people get paid millions of dollars to put a rubber puck into a net. Are we really about to show sympathy and gratitude to a person who is basically telling us thanks for the money, thanks for the memories, and thanks for welcoming me to the team in 2001 when the KHL didn't exist (and the NHL was my best financial outlet) but now watch me go and do the same thing (since I'm perfectly able too) for another team in the country I was born... while you pay me (in full) at the same time.

Maybe its just me, but I wasn't aware the NHL was offering $7.5 Million severance packages (against the cap) for players who decided to play in it's rival league.

You realize if he retires from the nhl he doesn't get paid for the last year on his contract, right? His cap counting against the cap != him actually getting pad that money.

As for the cap, if dats leaves, trade him to a small market team in need of getting over the cap without the financial commitment. Dumping that cap hit would be sooooooo easy. There is literally nothing to worry about. To some teams, a cap hit without salary being paid out is extremely valuable.

I actually didn't know this or read it that way.

Even still, my main point was that he is backing out of a commitment he made with us out of preference and not necessity.

The penalization for the Detroit Red Wings is still the same... Personally, he will get paid in Russia, or in Russia and in the US (if you aren't correct) while we pay the price for a 3 year contract that was more likely his preference over ours... It's not as though our 3 year contract was front loaded or that it saved us anything... Why would we do that many years?

As for trading him, not really sure how that would work.

Pavel Datsyuk says he's focused on present, did not definitively shoot down chance he'll leave Wings this offseason. 1 yr left, $7.5 M

Read the tweets then watch the following interview. The press is taking it a bit out of context imo. He clearly said "I have one year left on my contract, 3 games right now - that's my focus"

Basically they could trade him to Phoenix if he leaves, and they need to get to the salary floor with only 28 million committed against next years cap. So if they trade for Datsyuk they get 7.5 mil against their cap without having to pay a dollar. The author also talks about how we can get Stamkos with this move as well (with the freed up cap space), which is probably wishful thinking, but the Phoenix scenario I think could very likely happen.

The big problem with the plan to trade him to Arizona (for example), is what are they going to get back. Arizona would have to give something back of at lease arguably equal value. If not and they are just trying to move the cap hit, I'd be very interested in listening in on that trade call....don't see anyway the league would approve it.

Edit: Here's another article laying out their options. If Dats was traded and retired the wings would take on a 2 mil cap recapture penalty for next season; obviously a lot better than the full 7.5.

conditional pick. If he changes his mind, the Wings get a 4th rounder or something, if he stays retired, the Wings get nothing. Or they give Detroit some scrub prospect that they know will never be in the NHL

I think something was lost in translation. I'm betting Datsyuk is talking about what he will do after his final year is out.

Exactly. He says he has one year left on his contract and three more games this season. They even ask him if hes concerned of the teams direction..He simply says hes upset on his own personal performance, in my opinion dudes a class act and will be back to finish his contract this next season.

I believe that article is incorrect. Cap recapture only applies to to long-term contracts.
