MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 I still don't believe it. I'm fully expecting to wake up tomorrow and find out it's all a cruel joke. These things don't happen to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ever. chaps80 1,591 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 Edmonton moved down to FOURTH?? Oh man it really sucks to be them. When the hell is the league gonna ban them from having any more first rounders until they start showing a huge improvement? Their stockpile of great young players and prospects is unreal. There's no excuse for them to keep finishing so low in the standings. If the problem is coaching and/or management, then fix it and start playing to potential. If they need to fill holes in the lineup, trade assets and get what's needed. Such bulls***. 1 13dangledangle reacted to this
Jacksoni 418 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) Babcock must be walking on water right now. You can count on them making a gigantic push for Stamkos. Looks like Toronto will be a future playoff team soon enough. Edited May 1, 2016 by Jacksoni

kliq 3,763 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 I find it funny that people are automatically assuming that TO has tuned it around. Have people not seen the Oilers? They appear to be going down the right path, but they still have a long long road to go.
dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 I'm actually happy for them. I live in Toronto currently and it would be nice to see this place rejuvenated a bit when it comes to hockey so I don't have to listen to all this talk about the Jays and Raptors. Leafs have a great group of young forwards: Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Kadri, JVR But the D needs some work though: Reilly, Gardner, Marincin, Corrado IF they got Stamkos in addition to this group they should be a perennial playoff team in the next 2-3 years with the addition of some UFA help on D. Maybe if he signs another extension and by then they've tanked like 4 more times. The parity is way too high in his league for a 1st rounder to matter as much as folks think. When Connor McDavid was in the lineup after he return from his injury - the Oilers won like 12 out of the 32 games they had left. What an amazing finish.... And when he was injured the Oilers won 11 out of 26 games... Austin Mathews isn't going make much of a difference. They need a lot more pieces. I'm happy for their loyal fans, Babs and Lamoriello. Giving the best coach in all of hockey a franchise center is going to do wonders for his development but this also does give them options to acquire Oliver Ekman Larson if Arizona gets desperate about moving down. It's funny how identical the press conferences from Holland Brian Burke are sometimes, both absolutely seem to think that rebuild is a bad word and can't be done because of this and that and of course the fans would never accept it. In comes Shanahan with a plan, hires the right people and all of a sudden a last place finish isn't too bad and rewarded with the 1 or at least 4 overall pick. Watching a young team grow and play hard to me would be more exciting than seeing deserving guys like Mantha demoted and robbed their chance to learn playoff hockey from one of the best (Pasha), because veterans are needed to keep the streak alive... Toronto now has 2 boxes out of 3 mostly checked: - #1 center check - Auston Matthews - #1 defenseman (probably) check with Morgan Rielly - #1 goaltender: missing if they add that man oh man Not to mention the possibility of bringing Stammer home and they still have JVR, Nylander (overrated but still a good yet undersized player) as Wingers. Will they be a playoff team next year? No way but if they continue to improve and get another top pick next year they'll be well on their way as is Buffalo. Watching the boxscores doesn't teell the whole story watch the highlights of this kid and you'll see how special that guy really is. McDavid isn't just your typical first overall pick there is a reason why this guy gets called McJesus he is already that good! People may laugh at the Oilers now but they have the fourth overall pick and if they draft Chychrun their defensive problems are fixed! Chychrun - Nurse two absolute monsters on the backend, Talbot as a #1 goalie and McJesus to lead the forwards..yep I'd trade the current Wings roster in a heartbeat for that. I've said it like 2 times this year. The Leafs will not win the cup under Babcocks current contract. They do matter a lot because TOP guys aren't usually making it to UFA anymore and no sane GM trades them, so the only way to get those players is well...drafting and developing. That bolded statement is absolutely, positively, 100% false. Pretty well the ONLY way to build a perennial Cup contender nowadays is to drop to the bottom and draft like mad. Star players don't get to free agency except in rare circumstances and to trade for one forces you to deplete your depth. The one way to build up a bunch of high end talent is to draft them. The thing about what the Leafs have done is that it's not just one 1st rounder. They've finally decided to take their time, develop these kids and do it properly. They have three top-5 picks in the fold now in Matthews, Marner and Rielly. They have another top-10 in Nylander. They have Pittsburgh's 1st this year, so there's another one, if they keep it. Won't get a great player in the high 20's, but should get a good one. They also have the 31st overall pick and another one in the 2nd round (Washington). They should get another decent 1st rounder in 2017 (don't think it will be top-5, but you never know), plus they already have three 2nd round picks in 2017. Will those players be as good as their draft position indicates? Who knows, but you don't get them unless you're in those early spots in the draft. The way it is shaping up, I think the Leafs will be a really, really good team in 3-4 years. They'll start climbing the ladder pretty soon, I hope. By the way, your entire post is completely contradictory. You say the 1st overall doesn't matter, then list off how good the Oilers were with McDavid, and how lousy they were without him. Doesn't that prove the point? That said, the Oilers are a completely different animal, they have screwed that up in every way imaginable. They let the inmates run the asylum and the results showed, which is not unlike what the Leafs had been doing for 45+ years until the Shanahan regime took over. My stats showed the Oilers did better without McDavid when he was injured than with him when he came back. McDavid didn't bring the Oilers out of the crap team they are and neither will Mathews. My points is Toronto won't simply turn it around with Mathews or one or two other players. They need a lot more than that (for starters having Nazem Kadri has your center is a mistake). Which goes back to my original point that they will not win a cup under Babcock's current contract. I'm willing to take bets on this matter - I stated this twice already this year in the forums. The Maple Leafs will not win the Stanley cup under Mike Babcocks current contract. Edmonton has been tanking for years and have plenty of young promising players but somehow ALWAYS seem to miss the playoffs. What makes you think the Maple Leafs will turn it around in 3 years? Don't tell me Babcock. He had a hall of fame roster with both experienced vets and 2 best forwards in the league from 2005-2012 and only won once. They annually have a 1/30 chance, and just finished in 30th place - not exactly a far fetched bet. There are also a few differences between Edmonton and Toronto (in terms of recent/current make up): Edmonton has never had a franchise defenceman, Morgan Reilly has that potential. Edmonton has never had a Mike Babcock, Toronto does for the next 7 years. Edmonton is not exactly an ideal destination for free agents, Toronto sits at (or near) the top of that list when the team does well.
