Red Wings Got A Special Goalie In Petruzzelli

Forget Mrazek and Howard. This kid could be the future of this team in net, and our best pick of the 2017 draft.

He was ranked as the #1 NA goalie midway through last season, ending the season at #2. Red Line Report had him ranked as the 33rd best player in the entire draft. He also won the Dave Peterson award for best USA goalie this past season.

Quote

The scouting service said Petruzzelli's "overall package of massive size, athleticism and fundamentals made him a consistent riser all season. Has one of the highest NHL ceilings of any goalie in this class. Huge and cat-quick, giving shooters very little to look at.

At development camp he allowed 0 goals during the lone scrimmage and stopped every single shootout attempt as well.

He will play on a very good Quinnipiac University team this year.

Looking like we got our very own Ben Bishop

Yeah, it's hard not to love this pick. I don't think there's any question that he was our best value pick (potential vs where he was selected) and quite possibly one of the best value picks in the entire draft. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head would be, the Kings taking Vilardi at 11... Now THAT was a steal... :tounge:

Think Coraeu's size with Mrazek's agility. Watched him play 1 game last year. Very agile. Yes it was the USHL but him and Svechnikov were by far the 2 best players on the ice for the Jacks.

that was my impression too

Now if we could somehow land Svechnikov next year...

I have high hopes for him, but goalies are a total crap shoot

Indeed. Which is why they're rarely taken with first round picks. I'm sure the Isles wanted to have the DiPietro pick back after the found out he was made of glass. Fleury and Price worked out well though. As has Gibson so far. Then we have McCollum...

My #1 concern with this kid...Will they be able to fit his name on the back of his jersey?

I know it was a joke, but Petruzzelli (11) is only one letter longer than Zetterberg (10) and is a letter shorter than Konstantinov (12). It's not like his name is John Brackenborough (14!)... :tounge:

An elite, durable goaltender is literally worth his weight in gold if not more. I have no idea how Petruzelli wild hold up, big size usually means more injury prone but that's just statistics and says nothing on an individual level.

While I have no idea I will enthusiastically keep tabs on him. If he's the real deal it could change this team overnight in a few years. Just look at Carey Price. He is the Canadiens.

I find the whole NCAA draft circumvention thing super lame in general. And I find I dislike the players who decide to do that to a team who spent a real asset on them drafting them. RFA control exists for a reason.

Imagine if someone like Jack Eichel got drafted by the Sabres, and then just said "lol nah I'm just gonna finish college now". That would motivate the NHL to finally close that loophole. We've haven't seen a big player do this yet, but rule34 dictates it will happen eventually here.

I don't care so much that Petruzzelli is a Bruins slappy (And Ned and Cossa have really eased my mind). But they should have to either trade us for him. Or there should exist some type of compensation rule. Like - if you sign a 4 year NCAA player - you have to compensate the drafting team with at least the same level pick they spent on him. Still sucks for the drafting team who has to wait 4 years to get even on their investment, but at least that seems like a fairer system to me.

Wrong. Rule 34 dictates that if it exists, there is porn of it.

Had he signed, he'd set a record for prospect who goes from most to least important in the shortest period of time.

Until we draft a decent center for the first time since Dylan Larkin. Seriously, who is our top rated center prospect now? Veleno? Neiderbach? Woof.

Luckily next draft is loaded with them. Much in the way where this one was D heavy.

I don't think we'll draft any higher than 10th next year. And even in really deep drafts you don't often get top end centers 10-15th. I think that we're stuck with what we have (or UFAs) for better or for worse barring some kind of Brayden Point type thing.

That's certainly where the Pettersson offer sheet discussion was born from haha
