Toronto is in a really strong position going forward.  They're STACKED at forward and have good goaltending.  Their defense is good, but not great, and they've drafted TONS of defensemen the last two years.  They're legit Cup contenders.  The only thing stopping them will be how good other teams in the East get over the next few years.  They'll be a top team for sure, but it's entirely possible they'll be one of those top teams that's always overshadowed by another team that's just a bit better.

Draft superstar: Done

Get a goalie: Done

Get young decent supporting cast: Done

Re-signing the good supporting cast and letting go the deceptively good supporting cast while keeping those contracts well planned/blanced term and cap hit wise while also replenishing the player pool through (hopefully) increasingly weaker draft positions: Not Done.

Pretty much spot on. 

Hate to say, but before this year i wouldve thrown their office staff as a strength in there too. Theyve now lost Lou Lam and Mark Hunter. Dubas is gonna really need to nut up or shut up. Thou starting by signing Tavares from your former mentor was pretty smooth... *looks at Yzerman*

Another big thing with Toronto is going to be how Babs utilizes Tavares/Matthews.  I'm predicting that one or the other of them will have a down year this season.  Tavares pretty much needs ALL of the minutes to be at the top of his game, but that would take away top minutes from Matthews (who projects to be better in the long term).  And it's not like a Crosby/Malkin, Kuznetsov/Backstrom, or Kopitar/Carter situation where both guys are really good at everything so their usage doesn't matter.  Tavares can't really be a defensive, matchup, center.  He's all offense, and in order to get that offense he needs lots of minutes.  Minutes that probably should be going to Matthews.

Yeah, I mean if you can get a player of Tavares' caliber you should, but it doesn't mean it'll work out.  If Matthews can become a dominant 200 ft. player then it's no issue, but I don't see it working if they're both trying to be a big minute, all offense, type of center.  It'd be like if you had Tyler Seguin and Conner McDavid on the same team.  One of them is going to fall off a bit.

I think for the long term quality of life, it's time for Z to hang them up. It disturbs me a little bit knowing what Franzen is going through, even to this day, because of his hockey injuries and sometimes it's not worth 50+ years of pain and suffering to play one more season. 

He has nothing else to prove and can go out a legend.

This.I think they'll be the Sharks or the Caps until last season. Which is good actually. Leafs fans have become numb to the sting of being bottom dwellers for so long that they are starting to become cocky again. What needs to happen is that they become a team on the cusp for awhile, but never quite makes it over the hump. This would create a new kind of torture for Leafs fans and knock them back down a few notches.

Really the only reason I would like to Z come back, even if its later in the season. After all he's meant for this team, seeing him fall short of that mark is unsatisfying.
