Their tradition shouldn't be "we took the tradition of the team we were playing, twisted it to fit our geographic area, and acted like it made us cool". Develop your own tradition, don't steal it.

Early Penalty Watch For Game 1

This. There has never been a conspiracy against the Wings or for another team, regardless of how much one would want to believe it. If anything, it's a psychological thing - we as fans see brutal calls and missed calls that appear as though we've been destined to lose by the refs; the refs may like the story and start looking (subconciously) for the favourite's penalties more than the underdog. Good teams find a way to win. No Fear, No Excuses, No Mercy.

All those wannabes in other cities need to realize you can't just make up a tradition because you'er bored, it takes time and has to stand for something.

If they had any clue what the octopus toss originally stood for, perhaps they'd change their minds about using an animal that looks like a one. I don't even want them to win that many, but hey, if tossing a snake gets them their one playoff victory and a bunch of their fans kicked out of the arena Wednesday, well I guess they've proved their point.

From the comments: Of course not. Why would all those Wings fans be throwing snakes? Oh, they meant the 250 Coyotes fans. My mistake.

    How about Danny Cleary?

Danny boy is a heart and soul guy. A blue collar lunch pail kinda guy. Teams don't succeed w/o guys like him. You could just as easily see him going to work the assembly line at Ford. He adds some grit to all the skilled euro's. Simply, he is a blue collar guy who endears himself to a town like Detroit.

It's only happend once....54 years ago when there were only 6 teams in the league. Montreal and Detroit made the finals from 1954-1956.

Lower the paranoid level, please. The Red Wings have certainly gotten jobbed at times, but they've also benefited this year, especially later in the season. The problem is not so much with officiating, but the rules of bogus calls like phantom interference or intent to blow the whistle on a goal. It is impossible not to be an idiot when something like that arises because the rules have so much gray area in them, it isn't black and white, no matter how good or bad of a ref you are. The officiating can be questionable at times of course but these conspiracy theories are just downright absurd sometimes that come up on here.

    The Hart Trophy

Hate the sport? I dislike Crosby because he's Mr Good Guy when everything's going his way and he's a whiny little punk when things aren't going his way. He matched Ovechkin in points, has just one more goal while playing in 9 more games. As for importance to the team, the Capitals don't win the Presidents trophy without Ovechkin. They would probably be 4th or 5th best team in the conference... maybe. As for Crosby's importance, when he got injured a couple years ago and Malkin was the top gun, he almost carried the team to the 1st seed in the East. Earlier this year Malkin missed 7 games, during that time Crosby scored zero goals, had 3 assists, and was a -5. You tell me who's more important to the team. Seems like they miss Malkin a hell of a lot more when he's gone than Crosby.

Gotcha, that's cool. They got to start somewhere though, whether in the grand scheme of things or ideas don't work out in the end. When you start from pretty much scratch, there are very rarely any bad ideas. And some of your best money makers or ideas is just simply doing something similar that another person/group does, and just slightly altering it to whom you are trying to promote to. Nothing wrong with that. I know it's hate Phoenix for the next 2 weeks but I'm all for fan bases trying to have fun and encourage participation as long as they do it without being degrading or hurting people or whatever. Don't see a problem in them doing this.

I think tradition has to come about naturally, and not just be made up because fans want to throw junk on the ice.

I have a ball python named The Mule. I wouldn't mind a piebald as well! The Yotes are excited and thats a good thing, but what a sorry attempt at tradition.

As a python breeder I'm just happy they plan on using plastic snakes instead of dead ones. Oh, and it's funny that they think the issue is that they'd be thrown out. The NHL has had a rule for this since the crazy rat throwing incident in the Panthers-Aves finals and the result is that the home team would be assessed a minor penalty for delay of game.

You Wings fans in Phoenix will have to look out! Now that the Coyote faithful have taken to the internet to spread the word, all 250 fans might be at every game trying to drown out the 20,000 of you.

How about a Meech/Draper/Lebda 4th line? Get it done Babcock! No one will possibly handle their speed.

Who will be the Wings Playoffs MVP?

MVP: Osgood (with the way he supports Jimmy) Sleeper: Draper (with the way he supports the bottom two lines)

    The Hart Trophy

Yes two games against the Islanders disqualify Sid from Hart contention. If you didn't notice the pens only just managed to win that game in OT. Pens might not even be in the playoffs if it weren't for Sid's play. He definitely deserves it.
