I absolutely love the fact that whenever a goalie does something stupid and is reported on LGW, somewhere before the 7th response will be a youtube video of "Lidstrom Scores From Center Ice!"

Maltby can be a great mentor to the kids in GR. He can show 'em a lot of tips and tricks, maybe some "get under the skin" tactics too. He was always one of the best pests in the NHL making guys that played against him come unhinged on the ice. It was awesome to see over these last 13-14 years. As a member of the Grind Line (Maltby, Draper, Kocur) and Grind Line Mark II (Maltby, Draper, McCarty) he has played a significant role in this frnachises history and success. To hear anyone who claims to be a Wings fan diss him......that's just utter bulls*** and I'm ashamed to be reading it.

Kirk Maltby nearing 1 year, 2 way deal

Kenny isn't perfect, he makes mistakes/questionable descisions every season, remember that. I would say this maltby signing is one mistake, but if they win the cup in june, I can't complain.

What happened to the new fun, caring, optimistic, Mindfly? Malt's can still be effective killing penalties/blocking shots (aka special teams). Reminds me, I will miss Lilja.

94 was bad because it was a huge upset, but it was just the first round and we knew this team was going to be great in the very near future. 95 was really disappointing after the way they smashed through everyone, but I mean... they were swept. They weren't the better team. 96 was bad because we had the greatest record of all time, but again, that wasn't the Finals. 2009 was the worst in my opinion. We had a MUCH better team and despite the injuries and non-calls, we were within one game of the Cup. The Stanley Cup was in our building and the biggest d-bag in the NHL lifts it. That's about as bad as it gets.

I'm just wondering who here is old enough to be a Wings fan, or remember, before 1997? 2009 was bad, but as a fan since the late 1980's, it wasn't the worst for me. 1994, 1995, and 1996 was much worse. After winning the cup, playoff defeats, for me, were easier to take.

    Quebec City getting new arena

Phoenix has better attendance history than either of Winnipeg or Quebec, FTR. Learn your history. The Jets and Nordiques didn't move because of the Canadian dollar. That's a LIE and a MYTH. They moved because the teams didn't have enough fan support. Certainly, a better dollar would have helped, but the teams would still have been sold and moved eventually.

Someone already edited his Wiki bio: "In September 2010 Ellis went all crybaby (on Twitter) about how much money he makes as a professional athlete. Given the climate of the 2010 recession no one is impressed."

Never seen the handshakes, but crosby lifting the cup was everywhere last year. If it's any consolation... when Yzerman lifted the cup he raised it to the crowd, when crosby lifted the cup he raised it as if he himself had won it. Yzerman will always be the better captain

Minimum of 500 NHL games then and only include retirement from hockey not to another league / lower league.

Just heard his interview with the Fan 960 Calgary (via their online player). That man was a warrior out there and his body got worn down like that of a warrior. Sounds like he suffered from the same kind of stuff as Holmstrom.

Would be interesting to know the average retirement age, it must be over 35 atleast it feels that way.. probably closer to 37-38? anyone know?

probably just nothing left in the tank... playing that style of game takes its toll on the body, especially as a defenseman...

    First Call Up Guess?

Then why would they bring him back up, just to pass though waivers again... It will be Maltby for sure. To the OP, they can see what he has in GR they aren't stupid. If he brings it in GR then he will be up here (due to injuries or for the playoffs when the cap doesn't count) or signed to an extension. They know when a player has NHL type skills and when they don't. He doesn't need to play a game up here for them do decide that.

probably the same reasons as the other 999999999 NHL players who retired at that age
