I like Mckenzie and he makes a lot of good points, but his underlying one seems to be the exact point I was making as to why this league won't get widespread appeal because of guys like Campbell. To me, he's basically saying "It's how these hockey guys run things, you wouldn't understand." Which puts the fans on the outside, and as I said before holds back the NHL from becoming a legit major sport. Everyone supporting Campbell seems to make a similar point. "If you knew him, you wouldn't question his integrity." Which is basically, "you don't understand." Yes us fans are passionate, often unreasonable hotheads when it comes to the sport we love, but I'm pretty sure the other major pro sports, football, basketball, baseball, even NASCAR, don't repeatedly give off the exclusionary attitude the NHL does. Every other major sport seems to realize they need to include and address the feelings of their fan base, especially when it comes to scandals. Whether it's Bettman telling us about how we feel about the game instead of actually listening, or Campbell's spinning wheel of justice, I'm getting tired of being told as a fan that I just don't understand.

I don't think the OP got the idea of the article right at all. McKenzie (not MacKenzie) is parodying himself and the rest of the media because they always feel like they are right, or know more - but in reality, they are just like the fans - they THINK they know better than the league executives, but really they don't. McKenzie is a great analyst, probably the most respected by league executives and players alike. Not to mention - he has a hard on for the Wings, and ALWAYS picks them to either make the finals or win the Cup. He seems like the only one on TSN to ever give the Wings their proper due, and I respect him for that, among other things.

The article basically says "fans can whine as much as they want, but at the end of the day Campbell is still going to have his job and he is going to do it the way he wants to do it". It doesn't seem that ridiculous to me, and deep down inside we all know its the truth. Big deal.

    HF Boards rumor

This isn't a rumor. This is one of those stupid "value of" stuff. The title should be "What would it take Detroit to get Iginla" not "Rumor: Iginla to Detroit?"

Reading through a thread at HF Boards, I got to thinking - do Leaf fans, as fans of a proud Original 6 Franchise, deserve better than what they've been getting? Horrible management, mediocre at best teams, horrible trades/signings and MLSE's only motivation being for profit hasn't stopped the fans from coming to games or buying merchandise. Of course, fans are enjoying watching their failures, many Wings fans among them. I don't like the Leafs as much as the next guy, but I can't help but feel the smallest portion of pity for what their fans endure compared to Detroit fans. I sure don't feel bad for the team, but to the Leaf fans who are starving for a winner (not the cocky, entitled fans), I do to a certain extent.

    Stanley Cup Droughts

Hey we're suffering on here too. Wings haven't won a cup in over two years. It's the worst.

I kind of do. Honestly though the massive obsession with every little move that franchise makes somewhat dampens my obsession. If Detroit were in the Eastern conference (where they belong), I'd probably care a lot more, because few things would be greater than a renewed Leafs-Wings rivalry.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

This is exactly the problem. You pay for the inferior product and the product WON'T get better. The people who make the money don't care about winning or losing. They care about money. Look at the Chicago Cubs. 102 Years since they won, and they make money, so they don't care to get better. That's not what he was saying at all. Maybe if you READ the post, and actually understand it, you wouldn't respond with such a snide comment. The problem is, that their blind loyalty to a poor quality tells the ownership that they don't have to improve. When a team is bad, the fans SHOULD stop paying money, otherwise, the team won't bother to get better. If Detroit was a last place team, I'd still watch on TV or my Computer, but I would not buy tickets or any other memorabilia. The fact that they sell out every game only encourages their ownership to put a s***ty product on the ice. It has nothing to do with their passion making them deserve to lose. It's that they continue to pump money into the pockets of people who ONLY care about money. A winning team is only as good as the money it makes. To compare Montreal residents to Toronto residents is ridiculous. Yes, both teams have hardcore fans. Have you ever BEEN to Montreal? The people there are crazy. ALWAYS. It's just a psycho city. Beautiful, and a lot of fun... but crazy. Toronto is a lot more business oriented, and so people are a lot more reserved. Try comparing New York to Miami. Miami is a party city, and is completely crazy, but New York is a work city and a lot more reserved.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

They deserve nothing. I spent my entire childhood rooting for the "Dead Wings" only to have my heart ripped out in '95. That only made the victory in 97 so much the sweeter. If it happens for the Leafs, great. If not, thats too bad, but you wont see me crying a tear for them.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

That would be what is known as a win/win situation; Leafs win the Cup - *poof* no more Leafs fans. Yeah, that really worked for Chicago, didn't it? Times didn't get better until there was a change in ownership.

I don't even care about his thoughts on the Wings. What I love about him is his hockey knowledge across not only the NHL, but NCAA, CHL and AHL, is second to none. He's not too opinionated and doesn't critique teams like an ex-pro or something, but still seems to make better predictions than most ex-pro experts. I agree, I think the OP mighta read the article hungover or something because he's just so far off-base it's not funny.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

As someone who lives in one of the west Toronto 'burbs, I have enjoyed the post lockout playoffs. I haven't had to deal with any loud mouth Leafs fans in April-May since 2004. My Leaf fan friends don't want to talk playoffs, and that's fine with me.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

The funny thing is, perhaps it's the blind loyalty that is keeping the leafs down. If these people wouldn't be so ready to still pay big money for tickets and everything else despite chronically being known as "Loserville," perhaps the financial pressure might force some changes to be made. To me, it's dumb to want to pay for an inferior product year after year. So no, maybe Leafs fans don't deserve better.

Do Maple Leaf fans deserve better?

Absolutely they deserve better. A long-standing, once proud franchise is in the pits of despair with no discernible way out. Much like the Hawks, once they regain some of their former glory it's back on the Public Enemy list, but for now they deserve our compassion.

What a great article! Not his best, but a great article nonetheless. Bob McKenzie is possibly the best and most humble hockey writer today. Not to mention his scoops are always 100% reliable.

I think they might be the most loyal fans in the league, and Leafs fans are absolutely nuts about their team. I think they deserve better.

Ritola is a useless NHLer. He didn't earn a spot on the Red Wings, and I'm glad he's no longer a stain in our organization.
