What are the odds that one of those first round picks turns out to be anywhere close to the player Doughty is? We're talking about a 21 year old whose already one of the best in the game. He would be the face of the defense for the next 15 years. I would do it in a heartbeat. Won't happen though.

Yes, and then we could offer up our next four first round draft picks in the process. No thanks. No, he won't be pissed off if we don't get Doughty, because it will mean the team hasn't mortgaged its future for a D-man who suffered a major concussion last season.

Man, you should bunch together the entire 1989 Detroit draft picks as number 1 . Lidstrom, Fedorov, Sillinger, Drake, Konstantinov. Not a bad year at all...
  6. 1 point
Exactly, i've never heard a bad thing about him, except from opposing goalies. As soon as he found out he was drafted by the Wings he immediately went to the media to gush about Zetterberg and Datsyuk and said it's been a lifelong dream to play with Datsyuk some day... Doesn't sound like a cocky douchebag... Plus, i highly doubt TSN would ever use the phrase "cocky douchebag". And that team would skate circles around last years team...your point?

    Does this annoy you?

I just say that you make it so something like 40% of their salary stays up. Then 33% buy-out makes more sense in the offseason and you could still get cap relief by sending someone down, just not total cap relief.

Probably right and I hope so!

I think it's silly that this is allowed. More, it's unfair, because whereas richer teams can simply take bad contracts and shove them into the minors, the teams with less money can't afford ot do so.

    Babcock "pissed off" about Burns-to-SJ

Well first off, Ken Holland has never missed the playoffs during his tenure as the Wings GM...So whatever strategy he's using, I'd say it's a pretty good one. "He let it go without a fight or offer." How do you know this? Are you suggesting Cliff Fletcher walked over to our table and said "I'll give you Burns for free" and Holland turned them down? Essentially, Minnesota got 3 first round picks, all offensive guys, from this deal. The Wings didn't have that kind of depth of young offensive players, so Minnesota turned to someone who did. There are probably a bazillion gajillion trade discussions that happen during the course of the year, and realistically only a slim percentage of those actually result in trades. Ken Holland is a smart guy. He knows what other teams are doing. He knows what our strengths and weaknesses are. One way or another, he's going to address those needs. But he's also going to do it in a way that helps us in the long run, just not this season.

    Does this annoy you?

It's very annoying. There's a salary cap for a reason. If you send a player to the minors/overseas...you should be responsible for 50% of his salary against that years cap. Only way I can think of to solve it. Above poster is correct about same agents/players being 'turned off' by how players are treated this way....but that seems like too small of a penalty to me. Wish we could have a soft cap with a 'luxury tax' in the NHL....oh well.

There were no top end DMen left at the 24th spot so he traded down to get two picks and came away with one of the most skilled forwards in the draft and the highest rated offensive defenseman in the draft. How can you NOT get excited about that trade by Holland?

    Babcock "pissed off" about Burns-to-SJ

One, the article doesn't say Babs is pissed at Kenny. You're all just assuming Kenny didn't make an offer, as if the hockey world revolves around us and every team looking to deal has to come to us for permission. For all we know Kenny did make an offer and was turned down, or Minny really liked SJs offer and Kenny never had a chance. I'm also disappointed that we didn't get Burns. I'm surprised the price was that low, and believe we could have offered something comparable. But I'm not going to get pissed at someone who's done so much for this team even if it comes out that he wasn't interested in Burns. There are reasons why Burns wouldn't be as attractive to us as he was to SJ. The Sharks also needed a top 4 defenseman. They don't have the cap space we do so their FA prospects aren't as good. Burns gives them a stud at a cheap price. They have the rest of their top 4 signed beyond this year; we already have 3 top 4 defenseman in their last year. Setoguchi was their 7th best forward; if we had to give up Flip or Franzen it'd be our 3rd/4th best, and our top 6 was already weaker than SJ's. If I hear that Minny asked us for Hudler and Emmerton and we turned it down, I'd be pissed. But if it would have been Flip and Nyquist, even though I'd still do it, I could at least understand. Burns is better than any FA this year, but he's not a Norris candidate.

Does anyone think "pissed off" and "Burns" shouldn't be in a sentence together?

    Babcock "pissed off" about Burns-to-SJ

OK, so this is an article from a relatively unknown website, written by someone who clearly doesn't speak the English language very well. Further, he has something written that Babcock would probably never truly say in public. I'm calling BS.

How would we have gotten Burns anyway? Sharks paid a fairly steep price, it may pay off if they can win a championship in the next year or two but Wings couldn't have matched that offer. Many are saying we should've thrown Franzen their way, but I don't think Franzen is equivalent to Setoguchi in terms of trade value. Setoguchi is younger, nearing his prime, still improving, and carrying a less burdensome contract in terms of years. I think Smith would've had to have been involved to get Burns, and I think Holland is wise to not trade Smith given our lack of good, young D prospects.

Nope. Player is a left wing. Dating Carrie Underwood's sister. Wears number 11 because he tends to read upside down and backwards and they didn't want him confused. Skates well.

hmm, maybe with the addition of this new "player" guy nashville can afford to move weber now?

Why is everyone so quick to send off Hudler after one bad season? He deserves at least up until next season's trade deadline before he is moved. If he is sucking up to that point, then i'm for him being traded, but until then, people gotta get off his back. He (and Filppula) were huge assets when the Wings won the Cup in 08.

    Bettman Re-Alignment Proposal

This sounds like it should be a commercial for the NHL Network, following their old theme of "making our defence our offence and our offence our defence". Hopefully Doucheman folds the Ducks and has Selanne hired at Disneyland as a mascot of one of the Looney Tunes characters.

No can do. The Nibiru Aliens were traded to Philly this afternoon for Pronger and future considerations. On topic: I don't like lopsided divisions, but if they put Edmonton and Toronto as the extra teams, it'll all even out in the end.

Pavel Bure Doug Gilmour Joe Nieuwendyk Dave Andreychuk Belfour probably deserves to get in. Honestly, I don't know, other than Bure, take your pick. I don't see why Lindros should ever be included in the Hall of Fame, if ever there was a definition of flash in the pan it was him. Each year it becomes more clear to me how useless Hall of Fames are. I don't know if having annual inductions is a good thing, and I especially don't know if including so many players each year is a good thing. Sometimes it seems less like a Hall of Fame and more like some quota they have to fill. What would be truly impressive is being inducted into a Hall of Fame with less than 50 people in it.
