    No Ericsson? What a shame.

He wasn't bad tonight at all. Also, if anyone is wondering, Nyquist is a beast. Secondly, Hudler had a horrible game. I have zero hope for him. If we can't get Nyquist on the team, give him Hudler's spot and get rid of Hudler. Sorry Eva. Also also, I thought Filppula was a beast tonight, despite the fact he didn't have any points. Although in his defense, he had to play with Hudler a lot.

I'm changing it up a bit this season and NOT going with a monthly "featured" player (at least for this month, depending on feedback). Oftentimes the addition of a player messes with the layout when adjusting for other aspect ratios, or I have a rough time finding a nice, high-resolution picture to use. I hope you like this year's edition! Widescreen: 1920x1200 | 1920x1080 | 1680x1050 |1440x900 | 1366x768 | 1280x800 4:3: 1600x1200 | 1400x1050 | 1280x960 | 1280x1024 Enjoy!

Filppula was amazing tonight. He was everywhere. Really sound I thought in the defensive end and had some flashy moves in the offensive zone. Hudler was useless as always. I agree get rid of him. Any updates on Eaves?

    Gustav Nyquist

A 22 year old young man is too young to play in Detroit. He is suppose to be 35 or 41 years old. This is only in Detroit all the time.

    No-touch icing

I like the idea of "hybrid icing" as it were. No touch if an offensive player has not entered the attacking zone, touch if they have. So if you win a faceoff while in your own zone, and dump it all the way down, and your guys are on your own side of the ice, whistle goes. End of the play. But if you send it in from just behind the line, and you have a guy who is just behind the puck as it crosses the blueline, let him race. It might also lead to teams trying to fire the puck around on a line change, and get the new guy in the zone pressuring the goalie. It would kill stoppages because while teams might ice the puck to change lines, they would still have to have a "chaser" or they'd be screwed. More work for the guys stuck on the ice, harder to change everyone out on the fly = more goals due to opposing team fatigue. It definitely needs to change though. Also, kill the trapezoid. Icing injuries happen largely in situations where goalies can't play the puck to stop the offense from getting it. How many injuries have occurred since the trapezoid was installed?

    Pre-Season Line Hopes

Those lines might work out. More scoring potential. But even with Helm in between, can you afford to have Hudler and Bertuzzi on the same line defensively? That's probably the best way to incorporate Bert into the lines, if you wanted to (though I'd probably swap Helm and Abby, gotta get him as much ice time as possible). I might be alone here, but I certainly don't think that bertuzzi is a clear cut favorite over miller in terms of overall value to the team. You misunderstand me. IF we tried to put together a checking line, Bertuzzi wouldn't be aggressive enough to play on it. The lines I drew up are two scoring lines, and two shut-down lines...with a little scoring potential. And yes, I realize that I have hudler on a "shut down" line. But with Helm and Eaves out there, I think you could call it a shut down line regardless of who the third man was.

Wow, he barely grazed abby's head.

So apparently when you're wearing a Red Wings sweater, you have no responsibility for keeping your head up. But if you're in an opposing team's sweater, it's just unfortunate contact and you should have your head up? Abby's head was much lower than Ben Smiths was, he turned with his back to MacArthur and skated for the puck, putting himself in that low of a position. Then on top of it, he dove. MacArthur could've brained Abby if he wanted to. Yes he contacted the head, but it looked to me like he let up. There wasn't even a penalty called on the play. It should've been maybe been 2 for a late hit, then 2 on Abby for diving.

MacArthur receives 2-game suspension for Abdelkader hit

I don't feel Brendan Smith's hit deserved a suspension, but I am happy Shanahan is staying consistent. Consistency is all you can hope for.

I just don't think the hit was worth a suspension at all... I feel like Shanahan is being overzealous.

"Hi, I'm Brendan Shanahan, Vice President of the NHL's Player Safety Division. It has recently come to my attention that none of the fans want to see a game of WNBA basketball on the ice surfaces of the NHL. Therefore I have decided to stop all this nonsense and shinanigans and issue a simple warning to the numbskulls skating around with their heads down out there like they're in a skills competition: KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND LOOK OUT. Please disregard my previous comments about Scott Stevens being suspended from Hall of Fame induction until the year 2143. As it turns out, the forwards playing against him during his time in the NHL should have kept their heads up and looked out, as well." Funny how many of the announcer's comments after those hits revolve around "clean" and "the player never saw it coming" and the like. The attacking player has the responsibility to avoid getting hit. If he puts his head in the way, that's his fault. The issue along the boards is a much tougher one to call. That line is a lot finer. I've seen plenty of players cranked into the glass when they shouldn't have been, but I've also seen plenty of players bend over at the last minute and get their heads slammed into the boards when it just would have been their body if they had stayed upright. I think the NHL should be looking at these situations a lot more carefully instead of the ones where the offensive player creates the problem. Watch Smith's hit again in slow motion. If you notice, he makes shoulder to shoulder contact FIRST before his shoulder rubs off of Ben Smith's shoulder and moves to his head. For this reason, I believe there is NO intent to injure on this play, and a 5 minute major for elbowing should have been the only call.

Illitch: Definitely a new arena coming

I'll be in the minority when I also say I don't want a new arena for the Red Wings, they do deserve one though. But the Joe reeks and oozes old school hockey and hockey in general. From peeing in a tub down to the claustrophobic seats. I was at game 6 (vs the sharks) last year and I can guranatee a new arena would not have been as loud as the Joe was that game. By far the most outrageous, insane, fun, mind numbing, voice losing game I've been to. Roof was shaking it was so loud. I don't give a s*** who you are at the Joe, if you're around me you're getting a high five. And that's exactly what I want, a close experience with other fans that share a love for a game only hockey fans can know. The Joe provides all of this

No arena in the NHL has better sight lines than the Joe. Just ask the Sharks fans - there is an actual rule that you can't lean forward because you'll block others sight. A new arena will not be as good because of the suites. Cheap seats will suffer. Bank on it. So the Joe is not as sparkly as other arenas - I go there to watch a game, not shop or "dine" or be seen, and the Joe is the best place for that. Americans have no respect for history. Tiger Stadium, the oldest open-air park in the world, was left to molder and eventually be torn down. I think that's just pitiful. What if Italians just tore down the Coliseum or the Sistine Chapel because they were too old? No one back then thought they'd be standing thousands of years later. Not that I think the Joe is on par with these treasures, but it really is a monument to great planning. I'll take the run-down Joe with it's gray columns and outhouses in the smoking area over a brand-new, sparkly testament to bigger, better, faster any day.

He'll serve time for that as he should, severe lesson in finishing a good check. It wasn't Cookish' at all, to me Smith simply lined Smith up wrong. Good lesson.

As much as i hate him, i love the rivalry and don't want to see such a good players career end this way.
