    Nick, Homer retirement, New Captain

It's been known for some time that Zetterberg is the next captain. As for Lidstrom's supposed decline near the end of the season, have you ever played a sport with a deep bone bruise on your ankle?

    In appreciation of...

the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Detroit Red Wing Hockey Clubs, still the last teams to win consecutive Stanley Cups: Thank you!

Last repeat champion: Still the Wings!

Nick Lidstrom did not have a decline this season, he was playing through a deep bone ankle injury... if you knew what that is like then you would know how that affects your game a lot more than you think. Before that, he was a leading candidate for the Norris so it is safe to say that there is no decline this season for Nick. Also Nick has stated recently that he will never sign a contract and state that "this will be my last season." Nick is a classy guy and would not want to make a season about him... Now I think he will sign for one more year and he will once again be our best dman regardless of if we sign Suter or not. As for Homer, I am thinking that we bring him back 1 last year. He is a veteran who will be hungry and he was one of our best players in the playoffs, competing every shift. I also think it is really important he comes back because him and Nick are best friends, always go out for lunch on a home game day, and always drive to the Joe together for games... pretty important that they both come back.

Crazy, but serious, off season predictions

That would be ok. At least if Homer retires, Nick would have a ride to work.

    Bettman threatens Edmonton.

Man, would you shut up. It makes me mad that he has to say something like this. Don't get me wrong, if they want a new arena they should get one. However why does the NHL think it has the right to demand local governments to pay for their new toys??? Also don't they have the "best" ice in the league? Why mess with that? I just don't get why this jerk has to threaten a team with such history. I know if he said to Detroit, build the Wings a new stadium or they are going to leave I would go off the handle. Oilers, if you need a new stadium to see your young guns grow up, then build it yourself. Besides where are you going to send the team that will get more attendance? Hamilton? Winnipeg? Maybe Atlanta after they move? Any one think there is any reason he should be interjecting himself? EDIT: First article did not cover the full story according to TSN. So... TSN.CA

    Shorter Overtimes

Seems like overtimes have ended a lot faster the last few years than I can ever remember. The marathon overtime games of the past are fading away. About 10 years ago especially, there were multiple OT games seemingly every night. I guess in one sense, this era of hockey brings more exciting back and forth OT's, hence the game ends faster. Ten years ago, there was more trapping and less chances, hence the games went on longer. Of course, there are still games from time to time that go multiple OT's (we already had one in these playoffs), but I'm noticing they're becoming more rare. Personally, I miss seeing longer overtime games, especially when other teams are playing. Just seeing the grind and tear that long games have on the players adds to the playoff excitement. Goals in such games are so backbreaking for the team that loses them. Now, the games end before I can even sit down to watch the OT.

f*** this stupid CBA its time for Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, Boston and New York to bring it down finally. I mean what kind of second round is thiis? at the max 1 original six team other than that only small market teams supported by OUR money thanks to revenue sharing? I didn't care if the Bruins or Caps win but seriously this parity crap has gone too far. Imagine a team like Florida or St. Louis winning the cup, stanley cup parade with an attendance of 5.000 ? *lol* Guess our only hope rests on the shoulders of Fehr.

yes, I see others have thought of this. I've been thinking about it for a week now. The last 4 winners? IN ORDER? I blame Bettman, mister 'grow the game.' He is trying to establish to the 'new' hockey fans that 'anyone can win the Cup.' Real hockey fans don't care,(who is playing so much, we will watch any teams play. It's the Cup.) and fair weather fans that only watch the playoffs can get wound up about their local teams. Think of it. Phoenix, trying to convince their city to support them. Nashville, full of Pred Wings, advance to the second round over the Red Wings. If the Rangers fall, (and if my theory is true, they will), all of the Original 6 will be out.

Has anyone else noticed this? What was the first team eliminated in these playoffs? The Red Wings, the 2008 Cup champs. Next? Pittsburg, the 2009 champs. Then? Chicago, the 2010 champs. Tonight? The defending Cup champions, Boston. Anyone think that's funny? I have not thought of anything so funny since the 2009 finals, when the Wings won games one and two, each 3 to 1. And Pittsburg won the next two, scores in each 4 to 2. Then, the Wings blow them out, 5 to zip. And won game 6, 2 to 1. And lost the last. By a score of 2 to 1. Thoughts?

C- Datsyuk A- Zetterberg A- Some Enforcer That's how I'd do it. C- Zetterberg A- Datsyuk A- Kronwall This is what will most likely happen.

You are right. It was probably Johan Franzen.

Well since this is the realist thread, I'll be realer than real and say that hypothetically we don't make any moves for anyone. If so our team could look like this... Bert-Pav-Franzen Flip-Z-Nyquist Cleary-Helm-Eaves/Miller Mursak-Abby-Eaves/Miller Lids-White Kronwall-Quincey Ericsson-Kindl/Smith Kindl/Smith While I don't know if it would win the cup or not I think it looks better than the team we fielded during the playoffs this year. Any thoughts?

Detroit has inside track on Parise

Scary thing is they could afford it. LGW would implode. If I'm Nashville, I'm making it my priority to give Weber and Suter ANYTHING they want. Nashville can afford to match what even the most desperate teams would pay for them. I'll be curious to see what they do with Radulov though. Given the limited amount of NHL time he's had, I can't really predict the range that his salary will be in.

    Only hypothetical, Quick/Rinne

Rinne. He moves the puck better than half our current defense.

    Do we really need Suter?

Ok I agree with a lot of you. I might have been a tad unrealistic to what it comes to aquiring Nash. My point was- I have thought since 09 when we lost Hossa sammy and Hudler we never have regained the scoring we lost. I just dont think we need a top tier defenceman(unless lids retires). Give me Iginla or Nash+Doan+Parise and ship out Franzen and Cleary and this has become a much tougher team to play against with snipers. Do you not think we get through the first round with this team?

    Bettman threatens Edmonton.

Edmonton's management should send Bettman a bulletproof vest with a dead fish in it.
