I can't believe people can watch Howard play games like this and say he's average.

Ignoring their mediocre record, I love a lot of things about this team. Zetterberg and Datstuk returning to dominance, Brunner scoring goals off wicked wristers, Tootoo, even Lashoff. Plus, this game is fun, high tempo and skilled on both sides. Feels a bit like a playoff game.

I know Kenny always takes heat for the guys that he supposedly didn't sign or trade for and somehow it was Bowman who found him even though he doesnt have anything to do with this team anymore but this Brunner kid is something.

Good summary. I actually like Doc if Edzo isn't in the booth with him. Though I think he says "DRIVE" in one game more times than Teal'c said "indeed" during the entire run of Stargate SG-1. Howie with a great save in that sequence.

Doug Wilson: goalie pads are too big.

I remember an article from 10 years ago in the Freep, where they interviewed Yzerman, Hull, Robitaille and Shanahan (so over 2000 NHL goals then), and they all said the number one reason for the decline in scoring back then was goalie equipment. Hull admitted to actually trying to hurt Hasek in practise once, and Hasek didn't even notice. I also remember one of them saying that there was a time when you could score with a really good slapper, but with the big equipment it was impossible without a screen and/or deflection. You can have a stick made out of kryptonite, but if the goalie equipment is so big that the entire net is covered, you ain't gunna score.

I'm gonna go against the flow and say I just am not seeing the dramatic improvement. At best, I'll say he's cut down on the bone headed plays. But he still makes them and there are way too many of them. I think one of the reasons he seems to be improving in the eyes of some fans is because the rest of the defensive corps has collectively taken such a huge drop off in the last few years. Basically, I still can't stop from cringing when it's a tight game and he's got the puck deep in the Wings zone and someone is bearing down on him and he has to make a quick decision. When I can stop cringing in those situations - I'll start singing a different tune.

Do We Really Need a New Stadium?

I'm not entirely opposed to the Red Wings staying at JLA as I enjoy going there, but in all honesty it's quite inadequate as a sporting venue. Besides the sight lines and memories in the building, there aren't many other redeeming qualities. I go to sporting events for the product itself, though the total package is nice considering the cost to attend. The Joe is a dump inside. The lack of restrooms, crowded and unappealing concourse, uncomfortable seats for us tall humans and there's nothing around the arena either. Everyone walks out through the same exit, so it takes 15 minutes to even get out of there after the game. As has been mentioned, the area around Comerica Park, Ford Field and the Fox Theatre is better developed. Building a new arena there makes a lot of sense. I agree with the throwaway premise of society and generally these new venues come at some cost to the taxpayers as well. I don't think moving for the sake of it is desirable. However, in this case, the Red Wings genuinely need a new arena to play their home games.

TSN has the most unbiased broadcast of any sport.

I think it's a matter of perspective. You don't notice Ken and the gang because you agree with their take on the game... They are broadcasting the game to the red wings home market. The CBC broadcast is geared toward their home market Edmonton and Canada more generally. As a wings fan I could see no more bias toward the Oilers on CBC than toward the Wings on an FSD broadcast. Use the Chicago crew as the bar. They are disgustingly "homer" in their call of the game. The CBC broadcast today was not even on the same planet as that bar.
