Agreed. I like Brunner but when he said it was about "the right fit" I wonder if that translates to "somewhere the coach won't be on my ass all the time about backchecking."

Please try and remember that the Wings are now offering the money Brunner turned down to Cleary, they are not waiting on Cleary to make a decision on Brunner. That way your life may have a little less stress in it. Again, Brunner turned the Wings' offer down to test the market, the Wings made at least one offer of 3 years to Brunner. This is not new news either, he turned them down before noon!

Wings offered Cleary 2.5 million for 3 seasons, GIVE THAT SAME DEAL TO BRUNNER.

This is the best FA signing period the Wings have had in years. The Alfredsson signing is a great one, espeically with it being only 1 year with the potential to give the Wings 2 million in extra space next season should he not hit his performance bonuses. He gives us a top 6 forward with a RH shot who can also help out our struggling PP. I like Flip and I think he'll probably put up more pts next season than Weiss, but Weiss is a better center and fits the Wings needs better. Brunner leaving hurts a little, but someone had to go to free up a roster spots for Tatar and Nyquist, either of whom I think can provide his offence, while hopefully upgrading on him defensively. Now with a glut of forwards I fully expect a trade for a defenceman hopefully someone capable of playing on the 2nd pair at worst or 1st pairing at best.

Clarkson scored 30 goals once. Cheechoo once scored 56 goals, one season doesn't prove anything. Clarkson was extremely overpaid for a guy who is a 2nd-3rd line tweener.

injury prone guys? Weiss has averaged 74 games a year in his career and that number is only at 74 because he was injured last year. Make some sense before you post this garbage.

I'm somewhat indifferent. I see positives and negatives to what's gone on today. Alfredsson is a descent pickup for one year, but I think it would've been better to go after Lecavalier. Weiss at $4.9 is fine in a world where Flip makes $5 million. Even if it's very much a lateral move that could go either way, I think Flip needed a change of scenery, and I think he knew that when he demanded the money he did. He likely knew the Wings wouldn't pay, and he knew he wanted a bigger role, and it wasn't going to happen here. Maybe that's why he struggled. He wasn't going to get that bigger role so long as Dats and Z is here, so it makes sense now to try something new for both sides, and again, Weiss is a totally reasonable replacement that could be an improvement, could be a downgrade, or could end up being pretty much the same. I shrug at this move, but again, I'm glad a hole was plugged for a change, so there's that. I don't like not going after Brunner hard. I don't know how it all plays out, but my gut reaction is that it's not the smartest of moves. If we find a way to sign Cleary for dirt cheap and he takes a lesser role, I think it'll be a move that frustrates many now, but will pay off come spring. I still think we really need to try to add a solid defenseman somehow, and given our wealth of forwards and need to move some of them, hopefully we can swing something. When your top guy leads the league in penalty minutes for defensemen, you really could use another "top guy" that's a bit more level headed to lead that defense. Doesn't have to be a star, but if we want to make a serious run, having someone reliable that you can instantly plug into your top-4 would be really great to have right now.

How much cap space so we have left now if cleary walks?

I'm not UNhappy... I'd like to see Samuelsson go away, and our RFA's locked up, though. I think we have a more potent top 6. Should see some serious PP improvements.
