I'm assuming that comment was directed at me saying we shouldn't trade Jurco? I've always said that Jurco is going to be a very good middle 6 winger, with top 6 potential, same for Jarnkrok and Janmark. A player doesn't need to be a "superstar" to not want to trade him. To trade a player with Jurco's potential as a throw-in just to get rid of Datsyuk's contract with one year remaining on it would be poor management in my opinion. I'd hate to lose Jurco in any trade right now just because I feel his value is at an all-time low right now. However if he was part of the package that brought in a top pairing defenseman, I'd be fine with that, but not just to trade Datsyuk's contract...

Mods please delete if this isn't allowed but saw an article on Fox Detroit that fans are trying to gain support to change the arena name to Gordie Howe Arena. Here is a link to the petition that was posted at #GordieHoweArena on Twitter. It already has a few thousand signatures and I figure with all the die hard fans on here we could easily double or triple that number. http://www.fox2detroit.com/news/local-news/156966493-story https://www.change.org/p/mike-ilitch-change-the-name-of-the-new-red-wings-arena-to-the-gordie-howe-arena

Nope it wasn't directed at you.

Maybe we can somehow trade his contract for the superstars Jarnkrok and Janmark.

I don't believe it's "the streak" that's so important to this organization, it's icing a competitive team, and doing everything they can to compete for the Stanley Cup every year. You have no chance to make a Cup run unless you make the playoffs, so that is the goal every single year, the streak is just what comes with that. Holland is not a short sighted GM. He will do everything he can to trade the contract, to improve the team this year, but he will not do so if it will hamper the team in the future. He's already said he won't give up too much in terms of assets to trade Datsyuk's contract, and I think that would include Jurco or even Pulkkinen unless there's a pick coming back the other way.

I don't know about completely giving up on a shot at winning but I agree with the notion that the streak is too important to them to not do everything in their power to improve the team both next year and down the line.. And that would mean moving Datsyuk's cap hit if he were to leave but only if they have something else lined up of course. I think that new one week (or however long it is) interview period rule is pretty huge for GMs in general but especially for holland in a year like this. Interviewing upcoming UFAs and then possibly exploring trade options will tell him if he even needs to move the cap hit.

800 posts later, we get it... you think that teams should pay us for the privilege of taking on a cap hit. Annnnnnnd You're still wrong.

And Gordie will lie in state in the Joe. We wouldn't have had it any other way. Will certainly be going on Tuesday.

Funeral and visitation is open to the public on Tuesday. Visitation from 9 am to 9 pm (9 to 9 for #9) at the Joe Louis Arena. I'll be going, hope some of ya'll make it out. http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/16126875/gordie-howe-family-opens-visitation-funeral-public

How hard would it be to call it little Caesars Howe Arena? A lot of college stadiums are named after more than one person, why can't "the Howe" have two names?

As already pointed out, this is about money. Naming rights are huge and are a major part of business plans. They can't (even if they wanted to, probably) just change the name to a non-business name. They'd lose out on hundreds of millions of dollars. What they'll do is put a big statue of him out in front, name a street after him, or name a wing or part of the arena after him. I think Toronto has something like a hall of legends, and I think the Wings need to do the same thing. Statues of the greats (not just Howe and Lindsay, which are the ones that are currently at the Joe, I think) ringed around the arena.

New coach? Seriously? I'd definitely give Blashill another season to see if he can evolve and learn from last season...

Let's see, the Canadian dollar is worth less then a US dollar, which makes Phil Kessel better than Crosby. A Euro is worth more than the US dollar so H Sedin is better than Kessel A Kuweiti dinar is worth over 3 US dollars so there must be a Kuweiti hockey player that is the best in the world. In a word, laughable. P.S. I don't want Radulov on the Wings, and wouldn't even if a dollar was worth 5 kopeek (0.05 of a Russian ruble)
