I remember reading that when it happened. I cried. It made me feel like that scene in PLanet of the Apes when Charlton Heston stumbles upon the destroyed Statue of Liberty. They're like Clowns for guys. They bring so much joy and happiness into the world. Wait....so that's why the call them funbags!

The NHL loans players too. Christopher Ehn was under contract with the Red Wings last season, but played for Frolunda. Sulak was under contract with us but was loaned to the Pelicans of Finland's SM-Liiga. The only reason players like Cholowski and Rasmussen aren't considered loans when they go back to the WHL, is because the NHL, AHL, and CHL all have agreements between them that facilitate the process/organization of loans to the point that everything is pretty much systematic. Thus it ceases to feel like a true loan in spirit. To answer your questions though, the team receiving the loaned player essentially gets a good player for free, and the team offering the loaned player gets to have said loaned player develop on a team more suited for them, A. because the player isn't ready yet and needs to develop more before joining a higher league, or B. they're simply isn't enough room on the big club and it's better to have a player play somewhere than not at all. Could be a combination of both A and B. Disclaimer: I'm speaking strictly from a hockey standpoint, I do not understand the mess that is soccer.

Truedat, but they also need guys that can finish. To leave Zadina on the board to take Hayton at #5 is just stoopid. This is a team that managed even to outstink the Wings in GF last year. ...yuck. Take. The. Shooter. If Galchenyuk gets even a whiff of success at center in the desert, I'm expecting riots in Montreal.

I am not saying that he's the next Stefan, just that I don't think he'll ever turn out to be a good enough player to justify taking him at #5. Especially considering the guys picked after him. If he was picked in the 2nd half of the 1st round, my opinion would be different.

Agree. The dawgs will likely regret not drafting BPA at #5. Frankly I liked Veleno as the best center of the draft, despite his mediocre shot, but he or Kotkaniemi I could kind of understand that high, but Hayton...I just don't get that pick at all.

You're trained in meme magic? My first thought was she's probably using the incident as an excuse to "upgrade". Not that she needs one...

Look where the picks that immediately preceded Zadina landed on this list. Kotkaniemi(3) came in at 22, Tkachuk(4) came in at 24, and Hayton(5) didn't even make the list.

    Cholowski playing really well

"Training camp's good, y'know. Mostly it's a lot of people with whistles and whiteboards repeatedly telling you, 'Don't be like DeKeyser, our greatest disappointment.' I don't know who DeKeyser is, but I'm determined to not be like him." Wow. Big if true.

Despite the team’s desperate need for a rebuild, Zadina is their lone prospect in the top 50. Only because you stupidly omitted Rasmussen. But ok.

Rasmussen is making the team. Holland and Blashill have stopped just short of saying he's guaranteed a spot. I'll be really surprised if Zadina doesn't at least get a nine-game audition. I think he's absolutely NHL-ready. I think he makes the team and sticks. I think he's capable of having a Calder-caliber rookie season right now. He can score goals, sell tickets, put butts in the seats, get people excited about Red Wings hockey. The Wings want to score more goals. They think they can be a respectable team if they can get the power play working and are able to roll three scoring lines. They've said they have big plans for Rasmussen as a net-front guy on the PP and that Green's ability to feed him pucks in front is one reason why Green was brought back. Zadina would give us that much more scoring depth and could help us that much more on the power play. The Wings love Zadina. Hicketts will likely make the team as our 7D and push Jensen for the 6D spot. Hronek could get jobbed, but oh well. FWIW, Blashill has compared Hronek to Will Butcher and suggested Hronek could do for our power play what Butcher did for the Devils' power play. There's also a lot of time between now and opening night. A lot of time to swing a trade or two, which could open up a spot or two. Usually I'm on the "Wings hate kids" bus, but I'm not really feeling it at the present moment.

No. I've chosen my new Thing I'm Going to Complain About for the Next Couple of Days and Then Never Mention Again, and no amount of devil maths can change my mind. I get where you're coming from. Break down the math and, yeah, it's not necessarily fair to say the Wings have dropped the ball on the D drafting front. At the same time, though, I like results and I don't like a lack of results. If you're losing Lidstrom and Rafalski and you're swinging and missing on Suter and you're not trading for a high-end defenseman and you're going out of your way in every interview to say, "It's a draft and develop league; there's no hockey store," I think it's perfectly fair for a fan to say, "The last time you guys drafted a really good defenseman was in the year 1999. Git Gud, losers."

If anyone is feeling hopeful about the coming season, just watch and remember this (must enjoy pain): No effort. Half heart-ed checks. Truly embarrassing.
